    It definitely helps that finnish is written how it's pronounced. As a Finn I remember I first thought that it is weird how in English you pronounce the words differently compared to how you write them😅

    • @durabelle
      @durabelle ปีที่แล้ว +2

      English pronunciation is such a pain in the arse to be honest. There's just no logic to it whatsoever 🤣 For example though, cough, bought, and through? Bow and cow? Ok, this last pair was a bad example, as bow will of course rhyme with cow if it means bending as in "take a bow", not the archer's weapon. I'm so happy I started studying English as my first foreign language and just believed that learning languages is supposed to be that hard, as if I'd taken it on after Spanish, Swedish or even Dutch I would have given up 😂

    • @durabelle
      @durabelle ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@janakatri You're correct that Finns rarely speak proper Finnish in everyday situations. That's mainly used in the news and old movies, in some official situations, and often by teachers or professors when teaching.
      However, the pronunciation of letters still matches, since different dialects can be written out in a recognisable way. For example the word minä is often replaced by mä, mää, mie etc. We're mostly required to use general Finnish when writing anything official, and every Finn will understand it if you read it aloud, even if we'd otherwise use a different version of the language.

    • @durabelle
      @durabelle ปีที่แล้ว

      @@janakatri Jep, onhan se haastavaa. Toisaalta murteita ja aksentteja on muissakin kielissä, englanti hyvänä esimerkkinä. Suomessa meille opetetaan lähinnä lontoolaisenglantia, mutta oikeasti jo pelkästään tällä saarella on niin paljon erilaisia murteita omine sanoineen ja sanontoineen että samalta paikkakunnalta olevat tunnistavat toisensa puheesta ihan samoin kuin suomalaisetkin. Amerikanenglanti samoin jakautuu useampiin erilaisiin tyyleihin, texasilainen ei kuulosta samalta kuin New Yorkissa kasvanut, ja sitten vielä Australian ym. aksentit siihen päälle. Ero arjen ja kouluopintojen välillä on haaste siis muissakin kielissä. Ymmärretyksi tulee kyllä, vaikka ei paikalliselta kuulostakaan, mutta joidenkin vahvempien murteiden ymmärtäminen ottaa aikansa.

    • @JiihaaS
      @JiihaaS ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I think you can actually put the "enää" anywhere in that sentence. You can even start with it. Each version would have a slightly different nuance, but they could all be translated to "we don't live in France anymore".

    • @backonlazer791
      @backonlazer791 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@JiihaaS Yea, Finnish plays pretty fast and loose with the order of words sometimes. I definitely think it sounds weirder if you put the "enää" in front (although "Me enää emme asu Ranskassa" might be the weirdest and possibly wrong), but I'm not sure if it would be wrong per se. Possible and I _think_ correct word orders would also include the following:
      Ranskassa emme me enää asu.
      Me Ranskassa asu enää emme.
      Emme me asu enää Ranskassa (I think this implies that you're telling someone who mistakenly thinks that you still live in France that you don't anymore).
      Finnish is wacky sometimes 😄

    Gotta thank you, it was you who introduced me to Duolingo. Been learning French (in English, as a Finn) there for 2,5 years now I think? Sometimes just doing a lesson a day to keep the streak alive, sometimes like really making an effort. Just reached the level 8 last week, so I have the last two levels left. I'm now able to understand written French well enough so I can eg. understand what French news articles are about and recently read the Little Prince in French and noticed I could follow the story (albeit it was a familiar one to begin with). Listening comprehension is still hard, but I can catch bits and pieces when I watch French films, series and interviews - and sometimes even more if people speak slowly enough. I didn't have a chance to study French at school as there weren't enough kids to form a group, so I had to choose German.. But thanks to you the little child in me is at least a little more satisfied now. 😇
    (Sadly when I logged onto Duolingo today, I noticed the graphics had changed drastically.. Not digging the new look, we shall see if this is enough to kill the motivation. But at least I got this far 🥐🍷)

    Your pronunciation and accent is very good, you clearly have an ear (or in this case, mouth) for accents. :p
