- In this video, we check out the OLDEST CITY IN FINLAND! Turku :) This city had everything we could've imagined and we were super surprised after the other cities we had traveled to before! Turku had everything from art, to history, and charm. We loved every single second we explored of Turku and we are glad we took a fun little day stop there!

turku archipelago, that u missed😁
Small doors are for defence. Hard to swing sword if you are trying to fit from there with armor.
Turku is the old capital of Finland. You went to all the places i would suggest but there is so much more to do there. Good that you had the nice weather too.
Yay that is great to hear! Thanks for watching
It was capital of Grand Duchy of Finland.
@@Benderkekekekekeke quite right
@@Benderkekekekekekeonly for like three years. The Russians moved the capital to Helsinki almost immediately cause they thought Turku was too close to Sweden (if you’re a Finn you probably didn’t need that explained, but in case others read this!)
@@saaraa7876 My point was that Turku was never capital of Finland as country. It was capital of Grand Duchy of Finland.
Just binge watched all your Finland videos! Glad you had fun in Turku. You did more there in 6 hours than I have in the last 2 years!
Wow that makes us so happy to hear that you watched all of our Finland videos 💕💕💕 Thank you so much!
Walking by the riverside is THE must because that is what lot of the locals enjoy too.. It is not just some turist stuff. So well done! (I would have added sitting in one of those cozy cafes by the riverside, but you did not have enough time for that..) 🙂 (I lived in Turku more than 10 years and the riverside was my favourite place/space there. Also the other parts of it, not only around the city center area.)
Glad to see you guys enjoying my tiny little hometown! You really did manage to go through majority of the must see attractions here - well done. If you ever visit again I'd suggest to book a cruise to Stockholm or Mariehamn, or go biking or driving around the archipelago area around the southwest. It's nature at it's best!
Yay that makes us happy to hear :) Great suggestions, a cruise sounds amazing, also we LOVE biking so a bike trip through the archipelago area would be incredible
Turku Castle was on an island 700+ hundreds ago and it was build because of defense of Turku and Finland. But because there has been so much upthrust it is next to Aura river just now. That's why it isn't so close to our old city center. Greetings from Turku.
I love Finland and your vids so much! Actually, I am intending to travel to Finland
I hope u post more video about Finland so I can know more about this country :) Thx
Thank you so much! We really appreciate it :)
Turku is built on seven hills so it's also Finland's Rome. Speaking of hot day and using old buildings for some new purpose, on one hill there would have been Kakola prison to visit, which is a hotel now and you can also have your wedding there: "Elon Travel Kakola, Turku, Finland". There's also the Luostarinmäki museum area to visit, which is the only continuous district of wooden houses that escaped the Great Fire of 1827. And of course Turku is the hometown of brothers Matti and Teppo, who are national treasures: "Matti ja Teppo - Vauhti kiihtyy 2021". If only you would have had 8 hours. There's always next time.
Wow so much more to see! Thank you for sharing, next time we will definitely spend more time here :)
Kakola also has excellent restaurant and bakery. My favourite restaurant at the moment and Turku is known for its restaurants.
@@JourneywithJenandDrew The castle and old town must be nice to visit when the medieval fair is held: "Turun kaupunki - Åbo stad - City of Turku Hulinaa Turun Keskiaikaisilla markkinoilla". Can't promise anyone getting beheaded, but there might be some period correct songs performed: "Räikkä: Täydellinen pyllynpyyhin / The Perfect Bumwipe [ENG subs]"
I definitely didn't just binge watch all your Finland episodes.
Omg 🥰❤️
@7:45 in King’s Hall there’s my 17th generation great granfather’s Coat of Arms hanging on the wall 😊
WOW that is incredible!
You did quite good!
I couldn’t do that on 6 hours...I never tell tourists to visit cathedral and castle on a same day...both places just take so much time.
If I would tell you had to visit something at Turku, I would tell to visit Kauppatori (you allready probably passed thru, 'coz it's allmost impossible not to pass thru kauppatori when you use local busses), pääkirjasto (main library) it has so awesome places to visit. And also FÖRI (you passed it by by the way to the castle) it's a ferry over the River (and it's free)...near is also FUNIKULAARI, which is lift to Kakola hill...it's famous for it's unreliability...so people are usually going to see does it work. And KAKOLA used to be a prison (decades ago, so not so long time ago)...now it's a posh neighbourhood...it has a spa (for adults)...hotel...and one of the best breweries at Turku.
Wow, only 6 hours in an incredible place like this? That had to be tough, I know we’d wanna take our time there. Way to go, seeing so much in so little time!
Thank you both! I hope you are doing well 💕😊
Something you propably missed about the Turku Cathedral at the very beginning is that it has a Swedish Queen buried in it, Katariina Jagellonica to be precise.
Another curious person that was buried within its premises is Samuel Cockburn. A Scottish Colonel from the 16th century.
While we all know what makes this man so curious, but here's a wikilink to the man regardless:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Cockburn_(mercenary)
As for the Turku Castle, it's windy and difficult to navigate on purpose. Remember, this is a proper castle used for a military fortification, not a nobleman's status symbol. The stairs are narrow and low so that you can't effectively fight your way up. It's meant to be easy to defend and a nightmare to assault. It was built for medieval military sensibilities. Difficult to swing a sword in those hallways, so it is like that very much on purpose.
If you missed something about Turku, I would propably say the Turun Kauppahalli, but it's not so bad since you went to the markethall in Helsinki and they are very similar. Another one might be Mikaelinkirkko, or St Michael's Church.
Karin Månsdotter, sister-in-law of Catherine Jagiellon, is the queen buried in Turku Cathedral.
@@juhanisirkia3618 Katariina Jagellonica = Catherine Jagiellon.
Literally the same person. Katariina is the Finnish version of Catherine, same with Jagiellon and Jagellonica.
Funny coincidence that I watched this video while I was in Turku myself. I live near Helsinki and don't visit Turku even every year :)
Hey thats awesome!! 😄 I hope you had a great visit
I just burst into laughter when you went to Koulu to have a buffet and it was quiet :---D. You don't have to be quiet, I for example as a Finn, enjoy and praise laughter, noise, chatter and so on. Of course I understand it was a joke but still...:)
😂😂❤️ hahah we didn't want to be rude to the 1 other person in the big room!
I think you should’ve taken a lunch cruise in Turku or Helsinki archipelago. Both are gorgeous ❤
WOW that sounds spectacular
And most of those boat on the river do not cruise anywhere but stand in as restaurants.
@@mikkorenvall428 parked restaurant boats are nice also but there are small cruise boats that take you to the archipelago. Cruising around the islands is so different for people who live on shore where there’s just coast and open sea
I would love to visit Finland (Suomi) especially Kuopio in central Finland. I love nature, and Finland has a lot of it.
So much beautiful nature! 💕
I really enjoyed the series! You guys should come back in winter time for the whole new experience!
Thank you so much! We would absolutely love that :)
Wonderful ❤
Thank you ❤️❤️
Funny you said old pharmacy. The sign says Uusi Apteekki which literally means New Pharmacy 😅
😂 Hahah that is so ironic
Well done😊✌️
Thank you so much 😊
Lovely lads😊
Thank you 😁
Next time you should visit Moomin World in Naantali, wich is right next to Turku. Only 15-20min drive to. Very beautiful city next to the ocean, the Moomin World is in its own island and you can see Finland’s president’s summer villa from there, it’s called Kultaranta (Goldbeach). Great videos btw:)
Oh wow that is amazing! Thank you 😊
I bet they don't know how popular Moomins are all over in Europe. They don't have heard about Moomins in the USA.
Public executions actually took place at the Suurtori (Grand market place), which you saw earlier, not at the Castle yard.
My finnishness cannot take all this Texan politeness X) the clash of cultures is real but I'm glad you enjoyed our sun, it seems to burn us all equally
😂😂❤️ that's so funny
I think the castle is build in a confusing way on purpose, in case it's invaded, the people who live in the castle know where everything is but the invaders would be so confused! :D I remember on my tour that the stairs were build with swords in mind, meaning that the ones who go upstairs need to switch their swords to their weaker hand (left) and the ones running downstairs (the ones defending the castle) can keep the sword on their right hand and fight with no problems haha. i hope i explained this well.
hope you have time to visit finland again with a less tight schedule :)
Wow thank you! I love that insight :)
Yes its hot in Finland in the summer. And the best part of that is that there are no AC units in most finnish houses.
So you get to enjoy the heat untill its gets freezing cold again in the winter. 🤣
😂😂
Great video
But a small bit more information like how much was bus fare ?
Entry price to castle etc but great job !
Turku IS the best city in Finland
We'd love to return :)
😎👍🏼
Thank you :)
"I'm a big sour person" killed me 🤣
😂
The thing you HAVE to be aware of (in Turku) "What side of the river you currently are??" Is it on THIS side or on THAT side? And maybe even the people who live in Turku doesn't know which is which?
...
...
...
(When you're on the cathedral -side it would be "This side" and when you're on the castle -side it would be "That side")
oh cool thats so interesting 😄
You are such American tourists. Always on the go. The whole point of a vacation is to experience things and to relax. We are going to Italy for three weeks, to Lido di Ostia just to enjoy Rome and the food and maybe to pop into Firenze and Napoli. Maybe.
Not saying that Turku is worth more than 6 hours, but just saying.
We have other videos where we do more relaxing things too! This was just a short stop here in Turku unfortunately and we only had a little bit of time before returning to Helsinki! We hope y’all enjoy Italy! 😃
@@JourneywithJenandDrew Good for you! It's important to enjoy life! All the best.
FIRST
Winner winner! 😄
Turku needs at least a week and it's still not enough.
Definitely more time! :)
Open buffet in Finland including beef for just 12.5 Euro ?! Are you serious?
Yes! Absolutely crazy!
@@JourneywithJenandDrew You guys got lucky . I thought Finland is a very expensive country.
@@lightknowledge5297 Lunch buffet prices used to be around 8-9€ before recent couple of years cost rises of everything.
Lunches are cheap in Finland.
I might be totally off here, but were you in a bit of a hurry, or…?
😂😂
btw kiitos is not kiitosssh
no schhhhhcs sound
just ki-tos.
in american english. "key-toss"
lol just realised its literally key-toss. and that´s perfect!
Too southern american for finland !!
What does that mean?😂
Good content, too much editing. Moi.
Making jokes about old history having the "public execution vibe" while just in 2023 there has been 5 executions in Texas already ":D". Not to hate on anyone, but kinda funny!
My concern is that you either took time to look up that fact or just happened to know it 😂 such an odd comment
@@JourneywithJenandDrew you know I happened to know that little fact, I have a friend that lives in there, and few weeks back we had a discussion about that kind of stuff :P
