14:00 to be fair, istua should be "TO sit". They were only asking for the word "sit". If you tell a dog to sit, you say "istu". So you get the point for that.

Dave, I understand your frustration with the two dots over the "a". The only way I know when to apply it is when the "a" sounds the same as in the word "cat". Your Finnish skills have improved immensely.

@@davecad I have always though that if it holds about a 1dl liquid AND has a handle it is a (kuppi) cup, if it holds more it is a mug. If it does not have a handle it is a (lasi) glass if it is see-through, if it is not see-through it is again a (muki) mug XD see-trough AND handle= lasikuppi. Formal kuppi, casual muki

A tip: if you have to inflect a word that only contains vowels 'e' and/or 'i', you have to use 'ä, ö, y' instead of 'a, o, u'. That was the case in the word "keskimmäinen".

You should do a collab with finnish libraries. You can get free audio books from their app too + lots of language learning books in general.
Get a Finnish version of your favorite book, something you know cover-to-cover. Same goes for movie subtitles.

The quiz failed you on the sitting part. The word was "sit", not "to sit" but then the correct answer was "istua" == "to sit". So you were correct and the test was wrong.
This. Although to be fair, both "istu" AND "istua" are right answers there because of the missing particle.
It's kind of counterproductive to have a question that's worded so poorly. Finnish is hard enough already so when there is a easy way to be very precise, shouldn't make it more confusing than it has to be.
@@Pekeliini Definitely, 100% with you on this one. I feel like the question was intended to be "to sit" and the particle was just left out by mistake. I just wanted to point out that in this specific case both answers were kinda right, but only because the question was a bit sketchy.
@@isnepkt Istu is either istu! - 2nd pers. singular imperative or istu- a.ka the stem missing an ending. It's not like "he sit" would be correct either when it should be "he sits". Other verbs didn't have the particle either. If they ask for a word without context, it means the base-form you would look for in a dictionary.
As a 39yo Finn, I don't think I have ever in my life used the word "lävikkö", nor heard anyone use it. Even had to google what it is. I would have probably just called it a "siivilä" if I saw one, even though it's not quite the same thing.

Listening books is great for languages! I've done that too.
I just learned that lävikkö/colander is a thing. I've just called them sieves or strainers or siivilä in finnish, but apparently there's some nuance to them...
Lävikkö has bigger holes and is used for rinsing stuff out or draining extra cooking water from pasta or potatoes. Siivilä is used when something finer needs to be strained or it can be used for mashing things through it as well to make a very silky puree.

Lävikkö is useless, you can just use siivilä for everything lävikkö is intended for.
That accidental rally english mug made me crack up :D Also since you were wondering: lisätä puita = add wood. Vilvoitella comes from the word "viileä" (cool). Vilvoitella is a word you can only use in the context of cooling YOURSELF down (or other people). If you want to cool down objects, food, areas/rooms or the weather, you use words like "viilentää" and "jäähdyttää".

If it makes you feel any better, I could not have traslated "lävikkö" into "colander", since this is an english word I have never heard before...
(side note: I managed to translate colander into "siivilä". I would strongly prefer "siivilä", but that might be just me.)

Which learning method are you using? I'm thinking of taking my next step into learning Finnish as well by buying a physical book with grammar and explaining of grammar and stuff. In your previous video you grabbed a book to find stuff with a t and a d or something. Which book was that?

There are two words in Finnish for a bouquet of birch (or other deciduous tree) branches used in the sauna, and every dialect has its own idea of which one's *the* only correct word to use for it. So when I saw sauna vocabulary come up, I paused the video and fetched some snacks in preparation for the Dialect Wars which I thought were surely already being fought in the comments section. But the bouquet didn't come up at all! Which was a smart move on Emmi's part... Or on Dave's, if he simply edited it out 😏
It at least didn't come up in this module... maybe in the 'advanced' course? 🤣
actually, vasta and vihta do have an actual difference (the way they are made/tied is apparently different!), which is something i myself learned only a few weeks ago !!

Ugh mug and cup are the same thing as you said, I would have answered that wrong as a native Finn. But spatula is "lasta", and child is "lapsi", children is "lapset", but if you watch a child, sinä "katsot lasta". so it can also be child (it´s partitive). Yeah it´s hard

Your "istu" was technically correct tho... if we would nussia pilkkua, istua = to sit and sit = istu. For a quick example "sit down" command is "istu alas" in finnish

I believe that if Finnish word contains only neutral vowels (e & i), in the conjugations there's gonna be only front vowels (ä, ö, y).
And back vowels (a, o, u) and front vowels can never be in the same word, because in Finnish there is a thing called "vowel harmony."
The back and front vowels can be in a same compound word, but they are still always in their own "separate" words; for example "bicycle" is "polkupyörä"
But you should confirm this with your tutor, I'm not expert.
Short answer:
For the vast majority of cases, this is absolutely correct!
Long answer:
There are some non-compound words that do violate the vowel harmony rule. Most of them are loanwords, such as the words 'vampyyri' (vampire) and 'olympialaiset' (the Olympics). There are also a handful of non-loanword exceptions to the rule, such as 'tällainen' (such as this / this sort [of thing]) and 'veri' (blood) -> 'verestä', but also 'verta'. The former example is explained by the fact that it was originally a compound word that fused together, but the latter type of exception you just have to know by rote, no particular logic to it AFAIK. Luckily, this type of exception is pretty rare.
Kielikello has a Finnish-language article for how to deal with the exceptions to the rule. But if you want the gist of it, pay special attention to Dave's arch nemesis, the 'devil dots':
- If a word has no Ö or Ä, use A (e.g. 'krokotiili' -> 'krokotiililla'). No devil dots? Don't add any!
- If a word has Ö or Ä towards the end, use Ä ('amatööri' -> 'amatöörillä'). The devil dots reign supreme!
- If a word has Y towards the end, both A and Ä are fine (e.g. 'vampyyri' -> 'vampyyrilla', 'vampyyrillä'). Y is a loose cannon and obeys no rules.
Even so, often in spoken Finnish you do hear people both treat a non-compound word as though it were a compound if it *looks* like one, as well as instinctively wrangle loanwords that don't obey the vowel harmony rule into a form that's easier to pronounce (for a native speaker, anyway). So something like 'vampyyri' often comes out more like... 'Vämppyyri' 😅
