I know this is an older video, but there actually is a 3.5mm audio input. It is on the back of the camera and labeled "Aux". When set to internal audio the camera will use the built-in microphones if nothing is plugged into the 3.5mm aux port. If you plug a microphone into the port the camera will automatically switch to that for audio recording. If you have the handle attached you can even use one of the XLR inputs and the 3.5mm input at the same time.
it does have face detection for autofocus but you should have a fast lens and even then the autofocus is...ok. Normally not a good low light camera BUT i use a Kipon EF speedbooster adapter with a canon 24-70 2.8 lens and it makes it very good in low light. Best to have an external monitor to use with it but you can be pretty confident with focusing if you use focus peaking and then put the viewfinder on expanded "zoom" mode when focusing. Great review.
This is good Camera For Interviews where you have control over your environment. For run and gun situations the GY-HM 170 ,180 or 250 is the better ones as they have fixed lens
Point nr 4 at min 5:57 you say it doesn't have Face Detection :) It has face detect if you have an AF lens on the camera. Make sure the setup of camera is on AF, then check the USER SWITCH SET from the Meniu/Camera Function/USER SWITCH/ and choose a user buton (for exemple #5- Zebra) and change it from ZEBRA by scrolling down until you find the FACE DETECT function . Close the meniu and then press button #5 to get the Face Detect function instantly. So I guess only 4 contra remains :)))
Nice review, mate, but you're confusing sensor size with sensor resolution at 1:00 It doesn't go from S35 to HD, it crops from UHD to HD if you're talking resolution, or from 24.89x18.66 mm to 12.45x9.33 mm if you're talking size. Just keep your units consistent.
Really interresting video. I bought this camcorder and I am rather happy with but I have a lot of problems to find a lens compatible with the MTF mount. Do you know a compatible MTF zoom lens with no crop and all automatisms ? Best regards. Julien.
Whoops, you are correct. UHD 60p is only on output for now, not internally. UHD limit is 29.97p internal. It does not shoot 120fps. JVC keeps updating it's firmware, so maybe these will come.
This camera does actually shoot in 120fps but will record it in a 60p, 30p or 24p file. Meaning when you play it back it will already be slowed down. Under 'Record Format' > 'System' select 'High Speed'. Then under frame rate you can select several slow motion speeds 120/60p, 120/30p, 120/24p, 100/50p, 100/25p, 50/25p, 60/30p and 60/24p. As I said the footage comes out of camera slowed down already but can be sped back up to a normal speed 120p in Premiere or any other NLE.
JVC = Janky Video Camera. Great video review. You saved me a lot of time and money, especially the multi-cam scenario. I'm Canon and Panasonic oriented and having this as a third camera for multi-cam would have been difficult to match color. Dodge me a bullet!
I own one of these and its fantastic used it for TV docs, pushed it hard and the low light performance even with a 2.8 is graet no noise at all in very dark scenes
Somebody please tell this guy to get his terminology straight. Sensor size (in this case Super 35) and resolution (4K, HD, etc) are two different things. You can have 4K on a small sensor and HD on a big sensor.
Yeah, I got my terminology mixed up, because this camera has a very unique Variable Scan Mapping feature that is unlike most cameras on the market. It crops and scales the Super 35 sensor depending on what size image the lens is made to cover and then what resolution you choose by remapping the pixels on the sensor chip to match the native field of view of the lens. The menu system is pretty easy to navigate actually.

Even now in 2023, I love using this camera. There is no other camera that has these capabilities.

It's a damn shame JVC didn't enable 10-bit recording with this camera.
That would fix the issues with J Log.

this is actually almost a flwless camera, the only issue is lowlight and noise in the shadows

J-Log is the native LOG picture profile from JVC. It has a unique texture and quality to the image.
