    If it had 10-bit 4:2:2 4K and a better viewfinder and screen, it would be damn near perfect. They should at least enable that via external recorder.

    I just bought the LS 300 discounted from B&H and I love it. I mainly use it for streaming as a main camera with the Blackmagic Atem mini pro. The audio XLR jacks are perfect for the master audio from my mixer bc the atem minis don't have balanced audio inputs. Otherwise I always shoot 4k and render it down to 1080. It looks much more detailed and the low light is good with a decent lens. Because I shoot a lot of live concerts, I generally dislike DSLRs. In camcorders nothing close with 4K and S35 sensor at this price range! I can also use almost any lenses I have from past cameras. It looks fantastic for a master shot with a cine prime lens in a 4 cam streaming setup. For more film style shooting, I use Rokinon and Meike primes and the image is great. I also think you need to use a 4K on camera monitor with any cam or DSLR- flip out screens are adequate but not ideal.
    So my main points for the LS300 is shoot in 4K with prime lenses and use a 4K on cam monitor or monitor /recorder.

      It's a little known secret. A swiss army cam that everyone avoids for some reason but it really is pretty good. You're right about everything you said. I use vintage Nikon primes with mine and it really opens the camera up. I've seen the results from the rokinon lenses and they look even better. I just find when shooting wedding ceremonies, I usually have no choice but to use a zoom and if indoors the picture suffers. Does that blackmagic atem down res the signal from 4k to 1080p or do you stream 1080 from the ls300?

    • @arsmusicaproduction2217

      We stream out at 1080 through the HDMI. There is an MFT zoom lens that works well but it's $1500. I saw a video of a documentary filmmaker using it. Will find link and post.

    ive been using the ls300 for a few years also, i can get very cinematic shots, but the noise in the shadows is its crutch. When in jlog it looks great but i push the shadows and it starts to griainy but it sometimes adds to the cinematic feel too... ive been looking at the zcam e2 s35, as a replacement. If it had ND filters it would be so good. the zcam has super 35 sensor and mft mount, or you can go full frame with so many cameras now.

      Yeah i agree. I never use jlog. I tried it once or twice but didn't love the results. Would be better if the camera was 10-bit. I wonder if JVC will revamp this camera. It really works well otherwise, but it never really took off.

    Great video, Mike! I've hade my LS300 for about 3 years now or so and I still like it a lot. Some of the stuff you don't like about it I agree with, and others I don't - I've yet to experience any low light situations it can't handle for example. But maybe I just haven't gone dark enough, hehe. But! One thing I sometimes can get annoyed with is the fact that it records to h.264. I often need to convert to prores which can take some time. Do you think it will be able to record to prores after a future software update? If that's even possible, I mean..
    I have yet to switch to using the full sensor. I still don't know which adapter works best. A while ago I commented on another video you did about a certain adapter and you responded the next day with a whole new video with an update on that adapter (that was amazing btw, thanks!) - but it actually did not make things easier for me on which adapter works best. Maybe I'm just confused with all the options out there. So, a question; which adapter is it that you have attached to the camera in this video?

    • @MichaelWTurner
      @MichaelWTurner  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think it will be able to record pro res in a firmware update because I think JVC is not focused on this camera anymore. I'm using a nikon metabones speedbooster in the video. It's totally manual and I love it.

    I originally found your channel because of the review you did of this camera. Eventually bought the Panasonic DVX200, and have been relatively happy with it. I've also considered getting a GH5s, although with the recent S1 camera announcement, I'm seriously considering that as a low-light interchangeable lens system.

    • @MichaelWTurner
      @MichaelWTurner  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You have a DVX200. I really like that Panasonic threw a micro 4/3 sensor into a fixed lens camera. I was hoping to see more of that. I need that camera just to be slightly smaller. How's the low light performance and overall usability? What kind of stuff do you shoot most with it?

    • @alantuttphotography
      @alantuttphotography 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MichaelWTurner I also wish the DVX200 was smaller, although after a year of using it, I'm getting used to the size. I'm sure it's not the best in low light, but it has performed better than I expected in that regard. Although I purchased it to produce video products (and have produced a few), it gets more use in recording live events, along with a Sony AX100 and Yi 4k action cam. My channel has 3 public videos that were shot with the DVX200, and I manage another account which has dozens of videos shot with it. (th-cam.com/channels/Q5GfePubthhDTfCmxI7fnQ.htmlvideos)

      Here's a link to a very low light (almost NO light) scene shot with the DVX200. I haven't yet figured out how to do noise reduction, so there is none on this clip. I also exported a 4Mbps h.264 file to upload to TH-cam, so the quality isn't the greatest. th-cam.com/video/rFDUdprIDFw/w-d-xo.html

    Hi. I've owned a number of camcorders over the last 10 years. But currently I'm using the GH5 and GH5S. The S is great in lower light. However, I've been pondering adding a camcorder back into the mix for live events. Shooting long running live events with a SLR like camera is a pain the butt, once you are used to using a camcorder. Rigging up external monitors is a necessity, along with mics etc. Do-able but not great. Sorry to hear you don't get great low light performance in this, but if you are downsizing from 4K to 1080p the way that JVC does it, I would assume that it will produce more grainy and less light hitting the sensor. Do you get the same low light performance in 4K? I never shoot 1080p on my GH5s as I would much rather crop in post. Gives me maximum light sensitivity to the sensor. Since this can use my Lumix lenses as well as full frame lenses, I think this is a good compromise for the price. Detachable handle is a great option, sometimes you just need a smaller form factor. You didn't mention (or I missed) any discussion of exposure measuring in the viewfinder/EFV. My only gripe about the GH5s is that I got much better quality on my Canon 5Ds. Noticeably better. Nothings perfect out there without spending a fortune. In this price range, it seems the JVC is a very good option. Have you looked at the new Panasonic AG-CX350 4K Camcorder? It seems to tick all the boxes. I've not use one yet, but plan on renting one soon. thanks for your thorough review!

    • @MichaelWTurner
      @MichaelWTurner  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly, I don't shoot in 4k much. Shooting so many weddings, I have lots of footage and shooting it all in 4k would be a tremendous amount of hard drive space. However now that you mention it, the low light performance did do better when i shot a few clips in 4k. But i was downscaling to 1080p for my final video, so that could be it. I just looked at the cx350 at NAB NY today, but it's kind of big. For weddings I prefer a smaller camera, and the 350 won't give me the shallow depth of field that i like.

    • @MichaelWTurner
      @MichaelWTurner  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've shot with C100 Mk1 before and honestly didn't love it, but that was mainly due to the lcd screen. It was really dim and of course it doesn't angle well. I believe all that was fixed in version 2. The c100 has way better low light and overall a nicer image, but the JVC is fully capable of producing a good image too, plus it can shoot 4k and up to 120fps in hd. Also it can livestream and the prime zoom feature is absolutely amazing for my work. I'm not trying to sell it, but I'll take it over a c100 any day of the week.

    Excellent video! I bought two of these on eBay for 1900.00 each around 2 years ago and I agree that for the money, this is the best camera in my price range. They both have held up well, but I have the same issue with the flip out screen on one. Also, I find the image quality on the flip out screen is horrible, I have learned to trust that the image I will get on the SD card will be 100% better than what I see on the flip out. The zebra light meter makes the crappy flip out more usable, along with focus peaking. I also use my Feel World 8" monitor on my primary cam which helps immensely. The battery life is excellent, I film theater productions and never have to worry about batteries dying even if the show is 3 hours long. The image is a little flat right out of the camera, I found the "5 Enhancement Tips for LS300" video by Vid Headz- th-cam.com/video/wAQ2V_vxsNg/w-d-xo.html to be very helpful to improve the color and saturation of my images so I don't have to spend a lot of time color correcting. I've had no problems with low light even when the actors jump off the stage and run around the audience, I just flip up the ISO and the the image is still pretty good. The MFT mount is so versatile, I have vintage FD lenses that work beautifully, and The Rokinon primes I have are always spot on. The images are great for broadcast quality footage, the theatre previews I shoot are on TV every week and I'm very impressed with the quality on my 60" flat screen TV.
