Still a great camera in 2020, but JVC needs to update the sensor, screen, and EVF. We expect better low light performance with the latest sensors. Even so, it is such a Swiss Army Knife of cinema camcorders, it is still worth buying. The variable scan sensor with an MFT mount was a genius move.
praises the ergonomics of a handheld camera while showing it on giant complicated rig to turn it into a shouldermount.

JVC is the one I always go to for pro quality video recording. Its a no brainer, its made for pro's & purist. Though other brands might offer the 'bling' & other features JVC always comes out on top because it lets the profession achieve what they want with little fanfare, in a nutshell it get the job done! I still have my JVC HM100 ProHD Camcorder, it still blows away any camcorder today, however since 4K is the new revolution its a no-brainer that the next to upgrade or add to is the JVC GY-LS300.
This would have been killer with 4K at 10-bit 4:2:2...or at least the ability to output that to an external recorder.
Just wish it was built like the GY-HM890.

I wish JVC would just make this camera, with a proper side EVF and an Anton Bauer battery mount. My money is waiting.
Can you recommend which long zoom like 20x or similar zoom lenses work with this camera and allow for smooth zooming not like dSLR lenses?
I visited your site to find out more information regarding the specific components of this rig because I would like to do the same to my Ls300, but there wasn't anything there highlighting this exact setup, please advise.
Can you let us know what matte box is being used in this setup -- I have read a few places that the Z-drive couldn't be used with a matte box. It looks operational here?? Thanks!

The next generation of this camera really needs 4K 10-bit 4:2:2 at a minimum, with 12- or 16-bit RAW export to an external recorder as a nice-to-have. A better viewfinder and side-flip screen would be great as well.

image quality and codex are the essential elements if a camera gets to complex its usefulness may decrease.The camera looks like a controlled environment camera.

Jason Funk I will take that challenge. I got the LS300 and I will use my Roki lens and I'm sure you won't murder this cam. With out using it you are at a disadvantage.
but you have a 30 min recording limit, limited codecs, and no mic inputs! this is just a different kind of camera. A7s2 is great, but sometimes you need a spork and not a spoon.
poor ls300 such a good camcorder left in the dust. now all they have are 10 pound camcorders you cant hold for 5 minutes, and they dont compare in image quality to this. Re release this camera with a new computer chip, give folks the fancier record options and be done. Please. its this or an fx6. and the fx6 is a little overpriced. and i dont want full frame lol.
Positively, lavishly and absolutely T H E worse dynamic range of any ''Pro'' camera (and most modern consumer cameras out there now), period.. and the consummate king of obliterated highlights. Absolute garbage for any professional work. And good thing you added your own Zacuto viewfinder because the one that comes with the camera is as good as VHS cameras 35 years ago.
The Dynamic range of this camera on high resolution 4K is perfectly fine. As for crushing Highlights. That's NOT a camera issue. That's an operators FAULT. Not understanding what proper exposure is (reading a Histogram and checking Zebras) and not knowing how to use a hand held Light Meter will cause you to blow out highlights. Not even an Arri Camera can save you from BAD exposures.
Worthless camera. I mean its a relatively good camera but definetely dont worth the money. 4K capabilites you can have with many other cameras. I can buy DSLR with 4K capabilities. Or camcorder small enough to fit into pocket.
How you can call this large product "a small camera" or "compact camera". Its not small or compact. Its just little bit smaller than big camera.
I mean its 4 times bigger than DSLR.
One advice from me. If you want to compete against the competition you need to make JVC everio quadproof camcorders with 4K 60p and to put better sensor. Like 24mp. Do that and you gonna have badass camera. But you must keep the price under 400 usd. So by modern definition small or compact is something that you can put into your pocket. Anything bigger than that its not small or compact. Many smartphones offer 4K video recording. You should do much better than that. Because olympus already have 4K camera that fits into pocket,its action cam,weather proof etc. And its around 400 usd. Ask me what should be the camera. Simply get sensor from 24mp dslr and place it into JVC everio quadproof body.
The battery should be 4,8V at 4000Mah. Also solar charger,led floodlight built in. That will be revolution. But that is not all. The camera will also have DVB-T,FM radio,Mp4 player. So you can use the camera as Mp3/video player. You can watch movies. If you download something as mp4 format you can watch it on the camera LED screen. Also youtube app and facebook so you can upload video directly to your profile if you are near wifi hotspot. Because the list of cameras/systems that outperform this JVC 4K camcorder is longer than equator. Especialy for the price. You mentioned canon several times. Lol. Not a chance this model to compete against canon DSLR. If i am top professional i will not use camcorder. I would choose DSLR. Thousands of dollars for this camcorder camera? I will buy Pentax K3 II DSLR or top line of canon/nikon. If am amateur (which i am) will go for Olympus compact camera.
the viewfinder sucks in bright light, its not a great low light cam unless you have a very fast lens (there are work arounds). that being said, for the price (which you can get new for $2700 now) it is pretty amazing all the things this camera has and can do. They have added 3 new free firmware updates to this camera that meke it pretty impressive. I just bought one a month ago. verrrrry pleased.
