  • Voiceplay hit a home run with their last rock/acapella crossover piece, "Dream On" by Aerosmith, and they've hit a grand-slam with this one. More, please!

So they are amazing, are they not? I'd love to hear Metallica's opinion of this. Geoff totally outdid himself with this arrangement. No many how many times I listen to this per day, I never tire of it. I love that Geoff had put in guitar solo at the end and at the last minute, asked Layne about doing it via violin and VioLayne stepped up for it. It's so incredible and I was so happy to hear Layne and his violin again. I know some folks think it's a cheat but in this case it reflected on Metallica's guitar solo there. It is a cover of Metallica. Loved your reaction and analysis - thank you much.

Yes it's a Geoff arrangement. All credits are listed under the title of the video. I've loved these guys from the first time I heard them, whoever is in the lineup, and I fall more in love with them with every song they do. I feel truly honoured to be alive at this time. Much as I loved the singers from the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and since, tthe talent displayed here is just stupendous. People keep asking about that sound. To me it sounds a bit like a WOW in aub, but who knows. Might have been Geoff or Layne I suppose. I know Layne can inhale some low notes.

Really enjoyed the reaction and the breakdown, thank you so much! So many things in this are just stunning, but most of all the arrangement. Geoff really killed it. His blood, sweat and tears went into this.

It's quite clear that the verdict is they managed to make an awesome cover of an already awesome song.

Geoff has put in the work to make those subs sound consistent with the rest of his singing, which is so velvety smooth.
We’ve all had some fun trying to figure out how that boom is created since the first time we heard it in The Dragonborn Comes. Not even sure whether it’s Layne or Geoff. Seems like we’re always hearing something new and going “what the heck was that??”
Yep. Layne is a beat-boxing BEAST. I keep thinking it’d be fun to live in his house because I’m sure he goes around making crazy noises trying new stuff out.
Great reaction!! And congrats to your girlfriend for first view!

The boom is sliding down the lower 1st octave in growl register then you EQ all the air out and it just sounds like a subwoofer boom

The chord progression near the beginning reminded me of their cover of "We don't talk about Bruno," and I can't hear anything else now

That's another trademark of a Geoff arrangement... Beginning and end are the same.
I absolutely love this. I listen to it as much as I can.

When I first listened to this one on friday, I was tired and exhausted and it completely overwhelmed me. I simply wasn't able to process the complexity at the time and I didn't really like it. By now, after a proper rest, I think it is really good. If I wanted, I would be able to find single note choices that I would have done differently, but over all it is epic. I also like Eli's subtle conducting in the video.
Great reaction and analysis and you are one of the few that were not broken by Violayne!
If you like a challange, try braking down the song The Day That The World Breaks Down from Ayreon in under 45 minutes... 😜

Violayne and Eli's super-high note just before that breaks most people. :) I think I read somewhere it was a G5 or higher.

    • @EthanDrewMusic

The highest note I hear in that lifted chord prior to the violin breakdown is a B5, which is the perfect 5th of the high E minor chord they’re singing up there. Definitely starting to dip into whistle-tone territory, that B5, for sure. The minor 3rd of that chord would be a G5, and the root would obviously be an E5.
      Impressive, all the same!

Rewatching this and the last note in the violin is likely an E6. E5 would be the open string, which he's clearly not playing, based on hand position.
