@pingpongyul having the slightest trace of alcohol can change alot when your doing (allegedly) 120mph on winding roads with distractions (i heard he was with a friends, idk he might have been talking to him and just lost control) but theres more evidence that he was drunk (or buzzed) than evidence that he was sober
Dr. Porsche wins award as automobile engineer of the century.Read your history fanboys and badge junkies.Talked to a woman who still drives her 912 every daysince 1962.Let's talk about reliability and fitment still good after decades. No plastic ground effects or wings mis-aligning with body panels or falling apart after 2 years, no need to even contemplate repainting a Porsche. How nice is a car that you don't immediately think "what do I need to do that can make it better" after you buy one.
I love everything about this car. And that is coming from a number and musclecar collector and builder. I have always had a secret love affair with Porsche. They just do things right.
The GT3 is an undeniably brilliant car and definitely one of the best 911's ever made. It set an impressive time in the wet-1 min 27.2. On a dry track, I think it would have been very close to the top or right at the top of the leaderboard.
Actually, the records set by early 70s Porches at Le Mans are still not beaten today; even those set by GT40 MkIV in late 60s still stand. Today's Audi R10 still has a long way to go to match those performances.
Yep - theyre just the standard car stripped from weight. James May drove the Le Mans Aston through Italy, France and Switzerland in season 10. Hope that helps
@wesklock technically there are a handful of "production cars" w/ faster lap times than the viper. I use the term production loosely, because they're basically street legal race cars. I know the apollo is and radical sr8 are two examples.
In Porsche's case its engine is behind rear axle, 'hanging out in the back.' Driving at car's limit it will try to spin you out, but with traction controls and right suspension settings it's hard to say whether it is flaw or not. Rear engine does push down on rear wheel more which can improve traction during acceleration. Porsche is probably well aware of this debate since 911 turbo offers all wheel drive probably for this reason.
@Krystostiklion I will be more than happy to give the ZR1 it's credit. It is an potent car and the only thing missing from it is all wheel drive and perhaps all wheel steering-even though it being traditionally rear wheel drive. I love RWD especially its best in southern areas of the world with maybe one or two road conditions and seasons but AWD is so much more practical but harder to drift around a corner. That being said I wonder if there are any ZR1 AWD projects...hmmm.
i am actually a mechanic who works on these kinds of cars, so maybe i wont ever be able to own one, but i am able to drive them :) and i work on all the amazing products which is enuf to make me realize the perfection of these vehicles, if u think u can handle ur firebird better than any car u obviously have no idea because you have never drivin one of these cars, i have drivin numerous f-body vehicles and they feel more like my 83 monte g-body than almost any exotic car around a corner
@poretobatido Last i checked, the Ford GT was your boy's personal car at one point. It also had the best interior in the world, made by the factory that put the Veyron's interior together, broke the crushing machine, and outruns nearly everything else. Its also the only newer car to appreciate in value. Its that damn good. And its American!
@NobleM15fan Noble's have always impressed me. Like the GT3 they are purpose built. A bit of a chore getting one stateside though, the Noble that is. And if the Veyron and Zonda are getting burned, even by a Noble, it is clearly a track predicated on handling. I did some quick math and the Noble has more lbs per hp, but narrowly so (4lb per hp vs. 4.4lb per hp with the Noble) It's for the viewers, the track. Straights are cool, but speed can only truly be expressed on TV when a car is turning
@rithoo56 First off, this is a 996 which today would be a 5-11 year old car today. Secondly, a GT3 is focused on giving you the purest mechanical driving sensation while the GTR focuses on being very quick ( nothing more than a computer on four wheels). A more fair comparison would be with the 997.2 Turbo PDK vs the GTR. Cheers
the GT3 is th only one in the family that is actually a race car for the road. it runs with the GT2 pretty well but gives the driver so much more in the way of driving experience. the GT2 is a great car but doesn't shake you to the soul like this one does with its rawness.
you surely produce amongst the best cars out there, no doubt about it, but don't forget the italians, especially the astonishing Pagani's, and Japanese manufacturers imo are the best ones when it comes to producing exciting sports cars on a budget (Integra type R, which has pretty much the same "driver's car spirit" as the GT3, the 350Z, the S2000...
lol I hear ya, I'm a recent convert to porsche... amazing what they can do with 6 cylinders and 3.6 (3.8 for gt3) litres and I'd have to say I would probably pick that car over anything else besides possibly a mclaren f1 or ferrari f40
Can't wait for the newest version of the gt-3, it's supposed to have 440 hp. Also it stayed true to the 3.6 liter engine unlike Ferrari who jumped all tha way to 4.3 with their f430. I like the idea of doing more with less = Porsche
Oh and bln123, I have in front of me the R&T issue with the "World Superpowers" article. Just though you should know the Z06 put up tracks times nearly identical to the F430 and Gallardo, and beat the time of the 911 Turbo. Funny thing is, the Gallardo and F430 can come to costing nearly 3 times as much as a Z06. The leaf spring argument is moot if the Z06 is putting up times identical to its rivals, imo.
you know out her in arizona this car would actually be great even though its so hot and theres no AC it forces you to open the windows all the time forcing you to always want to treat it like a racer instead of slipping into daily driver mode as you can in other super cars.
1) They are meant to appeal to different buyers. Specifically, what class level they are planning on racing in. 2.) Price. The GT3 is around $115,000, whereas the GT2 is dangerously close to $200,000.
I happen to have observed a race between an old 930 and a spanking new z06. the vette got fokkin trounced.... I will say this: the vette, while slower than the porsche, has an absolutly mind boggling performance per dollar ratio...
@pingpongyul what are you talking about he wasnt drunk? he was tweeting pictures of himself drinking the same night he passed, idk if thats what caused him to crash but he was most definitely drinking and driving
I'm truly a ford mustang guy but i when i look at cars like Porsche, Ferrari, Mercedes, and BMW. you can only imagine what goes into making those vehicles. I have a question are Porsche expensive to maintain?
@daves1412 thanks that does help because I'm looking to buy a sports car probably a mustang or corvette but Porsche is something that i always like so i was curious. Do you know if doing performance work to it is really expensive because I always get bios thoughts on that?
@johnnyadrenaline I agree. but he has a point about convertibles. I have a boxster and while its ok to drive with the top up, its just i can't get the ear to ear smile off my face when im in that car with the top down.
because it's lightweight... not everything is about raw power, it's about finesse. besides, it's not like 400 is something to be looked down on. My Elise only has 200hp and hits 60 in ~4.5 ... but it's not about raw power, as i said before.
@ScottWho8591 well i mean britain considers the radical R8 a road car which did a 655 should we count that? and WOW i am shocked but after looking it up u are right.. I hadnt heard that but thats shocking bc i could name 20 cars better than the LFA
"and it's naturally aspirated, which is arguably better than turbo and supercharged cars" i have to disagree with you on that NA is only better on high cylinder engines like V8 or V12 but other than that nothing beats the feeling of boost.
I blew one of those away yesterday leaving the pay booths on the severn bridge on my bike. The guy didnt like it but he had been up my arse on a busy motorway for miles. I normally dont bother with them.
Now, that being said, there are still precious few cars that I would rather have over a nice Z06 or Viper, but those are some cars that to me are simply a level above the aforementioned cars.
@ScottWho8591 hahah well im down to not count the r8 or the apollo so lets just say LFA and viper ACR do the fastest haha but thats because the 458 italia hasnt been tested yet! its hard to judge based on nurburging times bc theres all different drivers and there are two different track lengths and some supercars arent even tested there.. id base my judgment on BBC top gear track times done by the stig!
Thats not it at all, he means its wrong because it throws off balance its completely different when you say left hand drive is the same it wont throw you off balance will it? engine in back means more slide = less control
Have you ever owned a euro car? Did you have a bad experience with it? I have owned GM products and now own German marques. I do all of my own repair work once the car comes out of warranty and the biggest difference is when you take one apart the quality underneath is what sets them apart.
GT 2 has a turbo, the GT 3 is not, for those that find that point elementary, please note that both of those cars are nothing more a race car you can drive on the street. They are in 2 different race classes is the biggest reason for the difference.
"If they were so wrong - not that many people would buy it, so they must be doing something right for over 40 years... " They are doing a lot right. I'm just saying that if they put the engine is the front it would greatly improving its handling.. Think of a badminton shuttlecock. It has a heavy end with a light tail that catches the air. The same physics applies to a cars. The Porsche, with its light front and heavy rear will naturally want to spin out
I own an LS2 powered car, but I still like the 911. Maybe it's not the best value out there, but I think it would be awesome to have a car that handles like this. But I'll never be able to afford it.
I saw a TON of Porsche GT3s at the American leMans race today. Theres a few in the video I took (on my channel). Cool car, but they really weren't that loud :-X
Just one problem with that idea.... Koeniggsegg has made a convertible that weighs LESS than the coupe. I know they're the exception, but it is possible.
was that fifth gear? cause on top gear it was a r8 vs a base 911 but yea i think top gear dide one were it was the ferrari 360 cs vs the porsche 911 gt3 rs
DAMN! Ol' clarky likes it better than his ferraris! Thats amazing, because my stepdad is going to get a GT3 soon, and sense i wasn't very educated in GT3s, i am now, and i can tell him its a good car! lol.
@Krystostiklion Miss my Corvette and am looking again even though we have a new 911 and an old F355 in the garage. Each are very different and wonderful.
porche have rather small engines compared to other fast cars (2.4 liters? i think?) but they still ahve equal horse power. it's not every loud cause it;s every efficient and the shape is classic dont diss the porche
@scarb0r0 still it's just cheaper in the states, in Europe it cost alot more + speed in a straight line and on a track isnt everything, German cars have superb quality on their cars and i say that as a swed and spit on Volvo and Saab..
i went for a ride in a GT3 today for christmas. It was amazing..
for some reason I love the way hammond talks in this. his style

"Now sir look at our lovely new headlamps" lol love it.

seen one of these last night and it was quite a treat!
I like these different headlights ,it gives the 996 gt3 mk1 and mk2 personality.

only reason why the engin at the back is grip for 0 to 60 , cuz for higher speeds they can just put wing at the back like other front engin cars
Thay should just raise the back to push more weight to the front wheelies and still have good gripp on the back wheelies
When Richard hamond (car journalist on top gear) drove this car he sumed it up really well i do agree with him that the gt3 is the best 911 ever.
@NobleM15fan Noble's have always impressed me. Like the GT3 they are purpose built. A bit of a chore getting one stateside though, the Noble that is.

They put the engine in the back initially to increase grip on the tires that provided the power.
I love Top Gear and rarely watch 5th Gear but Tiff runs rings around Jeremy and the boys when it comes to driving..
@gtx480v when and where did this take place?... not knocking gtr but they're both superior machines
@rithoo56 First off, this is a 996 which today would be a 5-11 year old car today. I have a GT3 MKI and all I can say....ITS BRILLIANT

it is true indeed they are an oversteer car and thats it, so if you cant drift it around the track then stick to awd/fwd.
what season is it ? if possible, can anybody tell me also the episode ? :)
It's more about the weight the the horsepower, which is negligible. Besides, modern a/c is shut off at higher revs and larger throttle openings.
how does a gt3 compare to a carrera comfort wise? is it all as luxurious inside? or is the ride much harder?
Heute steh ich in AA aufm Parkplatz. Auf einmal ein riesen Lärm! Startet einer hinter mir seinen orangenen GT3!!! Geiler Sound Hammer Rennwagen!

Good review. I think these look awesome. I'd love to drive one.
The song at the beginning is dirt track by deakin' scott
Yes, we want the SONG in the beginning!
Yeah the talon is sick. If you can find a video from the in-car prospective its sick.
@Tharosa1942 I don't know if it is, though it is extremely similar.
@pingpongyul what are you talking about he wasnt drunk? he was tweeting pictures of himself drinking the same night he passed, idk if thats what caused him to crash but he was most definitely drinking and driving
@Moozafarful you are wrong its carrera s
the carrera gt is only for long tracks
yeah i am with you on that one
that's funny i'm driving the exact same GT3 right now. I noticed they took off the front lip though.
seein him drift and fly around in that thing gives me shivers lol
And still that great Porsche sound.
What about the new Challenger and Viper ACR as well as the Roadrunners of old, The original Pontiac GTO's etc.. etc..?
i saw that episode on this site, and i dont think i have ever laughed so hard in my entire life...that was pure genius
I'm truly a ford mustang guy but i when i look at cars like Porsche, Ferrari, Mercedes, and BMW. you can only imagine what goes into making those vehicles. I have a question are Porsche expensive to maintain?

Love that sound

From a physics and engineering standpoint, it is nearly impossible for a bumblebee to fly...
yet it does... quite well.
@mikelove2110 This was in 2004. The GT-R did not exist. They wee just making a concept car and a that time they were working on it.
hey, did you find that song in the top gear porsche gt3 episode? because im looking for it too! the one from 0:00 - 0:22? thankx ;)

@LawrenceLugar1 the gt3 is basically a production race car. they dont make convertible race cars
Now, that being said, there are still precious few cars that I would rather have over a nice Z06 or Viper, but those are some cars that to me are simply a level above the aforementioned cars.
Corvette and 911. The Two best and longest lasting sports cars ever.
does any 1 know if u can get top gear on DVD b/c i dont think it shows in america any more

true but its the acceleration from that point on that makes it one of the big boys.
I´d prefer putting time into a car thet is already good to make it even better. Sounds crazy to choose a bad car just to make it somewhat good.
I own an LS2 powered car, but I still like the 911. Maybe it's not the best value out there, but I think it would be awesome to have a car that handles like this. But I'll never be able to afford it.

@LawrenceLugar1 plus its good just having the option. id rather have a hard top that converts though.
hey professor tganno1292 when was the last time you built a car that was as good as a porsche?
wots the name of the song at the start?
its awesome
@Krystostiklion Miss my Corvette and am looking again even though we have a new 911 and an old F355 in the garage. Each are very different and wonderful.
Your right, I should not have included the Ford Gt 40, as it was not built in America.
Funny, how you can pick one up for under 30k these days. A masterpiece.
The song is called Plastik Surgery by Freebie and the bean. PM me if you would like a download link.

Can someone explain to me what does "naturally aspirated" mean? Thanks.
Depends on what you are using it for...if you want a drivers car, the GT3 is on another level.
@scarb0r0 still it's just cheaper in the states, in Europe it cost alot more + speed in a straight line and on a track isnt everything, German cars have superb quality on their cars and i say that as a swed and spit on Volvo and Saab..
i do. i got direct TV. i think it's channel 264.
I just love this car, what you see is what you get with this engine,no turbo's no huge amount of hps, just go flat out and have fun :-)
The top on convertibles is for rainy or cold days only and makes no sense to have it up on a sunny day.
Yeah, aworange91. I would have to agree with you on that one. I drive a G8 GT, and we all know that is an Aussie made Holden, lol.
ProjM: 911 is the name for the whole series. 996 is the unique number for the actual model. Wiser now?
i've seen clips of sheps car running mid to high 7 seconds in the 190+ MPH range
hows that handle in the rain seraph?
