Oh, how wrong Clarkson was... 20 years later and Z8s are now worth more than $200k.... with the Alpina versions being even more expensive. I still think the BMW Z8 a fantastic car. The styling is incredible, you get the V8 engine from the E39 M5 and a six speed manual...
The Z8 could handle like a lorry and I wouldn't care, it's still one of the most beautiful modern cars and one of the few where retro styling was executed properly. Clarkson is really much too harsh on the original, the Z8 was a very competent car, maybe a little too soft for a sports car, but as a GT it was about perfect and the M5 V8 is glorious. Too bad nothing was truly improved in the Alpina version, but that doesn't change the fact that this was more of a hit piece than a fair review.

Sorry but 95k for that new is shocking. You could've gotten a 350z which handles better, arguably looks better and is similarly paced for 25k. Ok yes the BMW is higher quality in terms of interior and probably engine but 3-4 times as much? No way.
That's funny. I used to work down the street from a BMW dealership. My office faced the corner where they pulled out to start test drives. Every time someone tested the Z8, they would do the exact pendulum swing overcorrected turn Jeremy described. Still, would KILL to own one.
Actually, this was before they retested the Murcielago. The original lap was with an artificially wet track, and when they did it dry, the Lambo pulled a 1:23, which tied it for the lead at that point.
3:14 - no. Alpina had already beaten themselves by de-tuning the E36 M3. They replaced the awesome 3.2 with a lazy 4.6 V8 with slightly more power, which wasn't enough to keep up with the extra weight and resulted in a slower car.
Hartge went even beyond that... Their BMW E46 with V8 in it produced more power than E46 M3 and it was full blown bonkers. But Alpina has always aimed to perfection in terms of comfort first and sportyness second. They are great to drive, but much more luxurious than sporty.
BluWarta92 Hartge 1 Series with M5 engine was nice though. And smoothness makes sense as hell as the E36 4.6 could pull from zero in almost any gear like the 8 series, was torquey like a goddamn truck. The 3.2 was more of a racing engine.

Ok I watch top gear a lot and I love it, I know that they sometimes use strange metaphors and have their own sense of humor, but saying that the Z8 drives anything like that truck is just stupid. There were so many different things that they could have used if they wanted to but by using the truck, jeremy lost all credibility in his argument. Jeremy, BMW never announced that they would stop making the Z8, it was only meant for a limited run to begin with. The Z8 was one of the best cars ever!

From what I’ve heard, a lot of the issues the Z8 and the V8 roadster had in press reviews can be at least partly attributed to the run flats BMW put on its press cars at the time. Also, having watched Harry Metcalf’s video on the Z8, it was kind of the start of this retro style thing that later led to the new mini and 500, and BMW’s marketing wasn’t super focused, so journalists and prospective buyers at the time were a bit confused as to what it was supposed to be. I really recommend Harry’s Garage video on the Z8.

During the recent snow I spoke to several people who got stuck - most of them drove BMWs! True. Rear wheel drive = problems in bad weather. Other people had no problems, they all had little front wheel drive hatches. And if you think British cars are poor then you should see any american car!
You are right about the previous M3 it did have some mistakes , but not alot , the X3 and the 1-Series is not my choice , but the X5 is I`ve driven one and it was fantasticly comfortable and well handled .
@15point51 - new low sulfur diesel is actually pretty great, and the diesel engine's higher compression ratio means it gets more power out of the same amount of fuel. And that's even without factoring in the extra 22,000 BTUs per gallon in diesel fuel. But diesel engines generally only have a few thousand revs, and then you have to shift - so IMO, they're not as fun. And the cast iron engines are rather heavy. But the massive amount of torque is rather fun, especially in the industrial world.
The Stig is a pro driver they got to help them test their cars. Since he is the one who chalks up the timings for the various cars they will be in a sense, more or less fair, cos he is always the one driving them.
I'd still take one. It just looks so good. It looks like the way they used to make cars. New cars really look like they are designed on computers. They look bulky. This looks like it was designed on paper by someone with talent AND experience. And nobody call me old either, I'm 25.
I think some of you are missing the point. Jeremy felt it drove badly, but the Stig managed to put in the same laptime as a Lamborgini!!! Unless you think the lamborgini is a slow car, that's good performance. Harder to manage, but good anyway. Nevertheless, personally I think the Z8 is ugly (my opinion). My favourites are the current 3-series coupe, and in the older series... the 850i, man... that is a dreamcar!!! :oP

330hp for a naturaly aspirated engine is still pretty impressive. bmw doesn't make a whole lot of turbocharged engine because they like to keep a constant power curve with luxury and smoothness in mind. m3's engine is very responsive thou, with one throtle body per cylinder. yes you can turbocharge them, but you are looking at paying 10k just to get around 100-150hp.
I had a feeling a real driver could coax that BMW around a track quickly. Richard is so ham handed, it seems like all he wants to do is hang it out and let the smoke fly, then loose it a couple three times per drive. All the guys seem to be geezer drifters, smooth is fast, but they ain't trying to be fast they're putting on a show. These guys are a hoot to watch, but I wish they'd get into the tech of the cars more.

Ehm yes. He likes quite a few bmw's. All the M5's. When he drove the m5 v10 he said it was almost as good as a f430. He chose the e46 m3 over the Audi S4. He loved the e46 M3 CSL when he drove it on isle of man. He nominated the new 5-series for best car of the year, said it was all you could possible want in a car. And to top it of, he owned a bmw 3.0 csl.
yeah it sucks I was about to get a 1977 930 with 550hp at rear wheels only 17k in 2004 the guy don't have the car on his name so no deal then I missed the z8 instead got 2000 prowler which I still own since 2004 but man wish I got that z8..
if it was straight up, it would be impossible. considering it was a circuit which had lots of corners, it is possible. the murcielago's body is quite long making it hard to go around corners. the z8 is shorter and works faster along the corners (maybe). so, it's possible.
the z8 is one of the most beautiful cars to come out of BMW, possibly the most beautiful. It manages to be masculine and macho yet dainty and slightly feminine at the same time. It looks great and goes great (with the proper shoes on). A masterpiece.

you're so wrong, for starters the veyron has a 8 liter W16 engine, not a 10 liter V16... further more it dosn't go from 0-100km/h in 1.2 seconds but 2.5 and I'm not sure about the ammount of torque you say. It does however have 1001hp's powered by 4 turbo's and is indeed the fastest car in the world with a top speed of 150mph / 407Km/h

What Jeremy wanted was a Z8 by BMW Motorsport. An Alpina's always focused on enhancing comfort. The Z8 is still beautiful

I consider my 2021 Z4 M40i to be the FOCKE WULF 190 in WW2 quite a surprise to the Spitfire and Hurricane .

Ehm yes. He likes quite a few bmw's. All the M5's. When he drove the m5 v10 he said it was almost as good as a f430. He chose the e46 m3 over the Audi S4. He loved the e46 M3 CSL when he drove it on isle of man. He nominated the new 5-series for best car of the year, said it was all you could possible want in a car. And to top it of, he owned a bmw 3.0 csl.

yeah it sucks I was about to get a 1977 930 with 550hp at rear wheels only 17k in 2004 the guy don't have the car on his name so no deal then I missed the z8 instead got 2000 prowler which I still own since 2004 but man wish I got that z8..
if it was straight up, it would be impossible. considering it was a circuit which had lots of corners, it is possible. the murcielago's body is quite long making it hard to go around corners. the z8 is shorter and works faster along the corners (maybe). so, it's possible.
the z8 is one of the most beautiful cars to come out of BMW, possibly the most beautiful. It manages to be masculine and macho yet dainty and slightly feminine at the same time. It looks great and goes great (with the proper shoes on). A masterpiece.

we get BBC on basic cable but for some reason top gear is never on. it sucks because i love this show, and all they show are really old re-runs randomly

for starters the veyron has a 8 liter W16 engine, not a 10 liter V16...
further more it dosn't go from 0-100km/h in 1.2 seconds but 2.5 and I'm not sure about the ammount of torque you say.
It does however have 1001hp's powered by 4 turbo's and is indeed the fastest car in the world with a top speed of 150mph / 407Km/h
