I've driven up that course in a 53 seat bus, 11.2 litres, 150bhp, and my time was 5 mins, 15 seconds!

The ricer word lived up to it’s true meaning back in the early 2000s, because there was performance involved as well, unlike today, ricers only focus on the looks and how their car sounds even if it leaves a bad taste.
There's always been both. Stock-engine single-cam Civics with gaudy bodykits were popular in the 90s and still today. But there's also been serious motorsport competition built out of those same cars, then and now. If anything today it's easier to make a serious performance car because the availability of parts is so abundant. If that 306 were built today there's a strong chance it could have a turbo K24 in it, because it's so easy now.
As a guy who owned mustang in the US in the years just after the F and F came out...most of them didn't have much performance lok

The Sprite is a thousand times classier than the ghastly Pugeot. I used to have one (MG version) and my absolute pleasure was to go wizzing round the winding lanes of the North Yorks moors. Top speed and acceleration were irrelevant, it was all about handling, the lovely switch-like gear change and being narrow enough to squeeeze past on-coming tractors!

@Steelcaller they need to keep the competition somewhat fair, so if you can have a stock evo i will take a stock caterham, I think the point that is trying to be made here is that hp isnt everything, its weight

@BossTracKey Yes, I'm saying exactly that. I'm a third year aeronautical engineering student at university. The shape of a car produces lift - if you think about it, a car is closer in shape to an aeroplane wing than an F1 wing.
As for your point about 'angular' shapes, you're falling into the trap that Newton did of air 'particles' impacting on the wing and providing a downward force perpendicular to the angle of incidence with the plane. I suggest you are the one to look up Aerodynamics 101.

Amazing! That first statement was incredibly false, and all that money with NONE of it spent on the engine give me $28,000 (roughly) and I could easy and reliably push 1200 horsepower, and have race spec brakes, and decent suspension
That is wrong, considering it had been fitted with a 3.0 V6 Engine which is way bigger than stock
When I was a teenager, I'd rather have had the Frogeye Sprite. I'd even take it for its cuteness alone.

Actually it was a VTEC Club video with Tsuchiya. The opening scene probably took inspiration from it. It was a long time ago, I really don't remember that well.

@JRWILDY yeah, ive been looking at one of those, busa engine may be only 180hp stock but you can tune it up one hell of a long way, same with the type r conversions get 200 before tuning some guy has got 395hp at the back wheels
@DeltaPhi79 Exactly m8, that 206 it's a show-off car, not a race one. A race car doesn't have hydraunics, sound sistem, playstation&LCD etc.
That Peugeot has less horsepower than our old minivan (206) XD
next time do a mitsubishi evo because im pretty sure corners wouldnt be a problem plus the 4wd and 300-400 hp (depending on model) might help just a little
Is there a Top Gear episode in which Quentin Willson takes a Sebring Austin Healey 3000 replica and test drives it and compares it with the original 3000 and shows how the Sebring is improved over the original? Can't find any clip of it anywhere on youtube. Not sure how long ago it was, probably the late 90s/early 2000s.

Thanks; that's exactly how I feel. Funny, it was just yesterday, me and a friend (neither of who have ever owned a brand-new car) were discussing Porsches vs. Lamborghinis. He insisted that the Porsche was "slow" because it couldn't reach 250MPH. That made me laugh. I found out recently that my moms Volvo XC70 maxed out at 120MPH. And that felt PLENTY fast to me, with the roads around here. And for the people who think a modern car without the pointless crap would win, you're probably right.
