How to clean up 3D scans in Meshmixer

  • Previously we 3D scanned Mrs Teaching Tech, today I use Meshmixer to post-process the mesh and prepare it for 3D printing. This in depth guide shows you how to fill holes and correct errors in rough mesh files. Simplify3D is then used to slice the STL to be printed on my Prusa i3 MK3.
    Happy 3D scanning and printing!

    I just want to say thank you! I am new to Photogrammetry and 3D printing and I successfully scanned an apple but could not get all the fragments out and this was by far the easiest walk through! Thank you very much for posting this!!!!

    Nice tutorial about Meshmixer. But I suggest you do a general smoothing in Meshlab before editing details in Meshmixer. Taubin Smooth filter produces really good results in just one click !

    Hmmm - Great tips - have you ever tried re-sculpting the details in? I'm kinda on the edge on buying a XOne kinect just to scan the GF (as well as the dreaded "requests") but I really want to end up with a really detailed model.

    This was super useful. Out of curiosity, can this program be used in conjunction with Fusion360? For example can I edit something I scanned in meshmixer and save it in a way where I can then add to the scanned file in Fusion360?

    What are your suggestions for doing the same thing, but at a higher resolution to get more facial detail? The output I'm guessing is due to the resolution of the Kinect sensor. What sensor and software combination would be best for scanning a bust like you did?

    • @TeachingTech
      @TeachingTech  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The only other system I've used is Davidscan, but getting someone still enough for long enough is very difficult. You can but clip on magnifying lenses cheaply and in theory this will increase detail and the expense of accurate scale.

    If you used the 3D Creality scanner or the other (Rio?) that you've reviewed, you could have used the supplied software instead of Meshmixer.
    Is that a correct statement? If not, please try to explain to a non-techie. Thanks.

    I would personally begin with gifting a necklace to her. It can create bone structure model - it's not dangerous to fix it as some dog car rust, must use best approach for your problem - threat your creations with a brush. There is that part to ask somebody, why you need that printing hardware. Print any toys you want, but you must be seen in your local market.

    does robust smooth reduces triangle surface amount?

    • @TeachingTech

      It appears not. Press W to turn on wireframe. When I then use the tool the triangles move but don't change in number.

    • @Ozlow95
      @Ozlow95 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Teaching Tech Thanks a lot for your reply, but I still have one question then, is there any tool or method to clean up and reduce triangle number? Or just to reduce the number

      Make a selection (can b all), then edit > reduce.

    Noob question for anyone: when I’m repairing larger holes, the new surfaces are different colors. How do I make them all the same as the original?

    • @MHTHINK
      @MHTHINK 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm by no means an expert, but he is just editing the topography or depth data (no texture or colour, as OBJ files may carry). To 3D print, the colours will not be present. I suspect you can't adequately edit a mesh with texture and colour like this.
