I would never, and will never, trust anything from Kiri. After the Phiz joke I'm very surprised your company didn't change its name or disappear. The phone tower that originally came didn't work, battery came unplugged because the glue they use couldn't glue toilet paper, so they sent me a second tower. To show everyone how much of a joke Kiri really is they shipped it to me double boxed. Outside box addressed to me. Second box addressed, and had full postage, to some other person. Sorry to pull a full rant on this awesome video but I want people to see how much Kiri actually (doesn't) stand behind their products. Especially pulling this crap during the pandemic! I had to scrape my pennies together just to be able to purchase this paper weight. End rant.

@@xingyechrishu6382 they should have been refunded. They don't do anything even remotely to what was displayed in the promotional videos. I spent so much time trying to make it work! I even went as far as building it a 3 sided box to block out everything behind the turntable. I was using a Blackberry Priv and it wouldn't work. So I bought a higher end Motorola One Hyper and still got nothing usable. I was blown away by the promotional videos. So disappointed in the actual product.
Years ago tried some photogrammetry software that didn't work out so good. Thinking Maker World AI might be my next option. Thank you for testing these out.

Tho we do have a handheld scanner and the scan quality is really good, that thing is very finicky and it's difficult to scan bigger objects. Deffinitely goona try out some of these. from my experience KIRI is also really good for doing things like scanning inside an object as well. i have personally used it to 3D scan the interior of a car along with the frame and it is good enough to reliably make mount points for engine swaps. It is the only one that works much at all for this kind of application.
Great video, Eric! Really enjoyed watching this shoulder-to-shoulder comparison. 3D scanning has involved so much in the past few years. Although many phone apps can do 3D scanning, they don't always use the same 3D scanning methods. There's more than one way to make a smartphone do 3D scanning, there are photogrammetry (traditional but still gives the best mesh if done right), LiDAR (fast, but mesh is not so detailed), FaceID (Meh, not a great choice), NeuS (The tech that KIRI Engine and MakerWorld use, I believe) and the recent 3D Gaussian Splatting (Cool but can't generate mesh). But unfortunately, 3D scanning has always been a niche topic that not many people are aware of the pros and cons and the impact of different 3D scanning methods; it's so nice to see a great video on TH-cam that toggles the differences between each 3D scanner app.

It's not as easy as I thought it would be. That's for sure. With all the modern technology we have, there's really no reason we don't have good, free programs that we can make scans with jpg files. (That are accurate and measurable/modifiable in CAD programs like Solidworks, AutoCAD and other CAD programs). I haven't really found anything like that yet though and have had to always make parts from scratch.
Thank you for testing all these apps for us. I think this whole experience would benefit a lot from printing with a resin printer. The layer lines are so apparent that it's hard to discern what app got the sharpest details. Thank you for your research.

As a sculptor and new to 3D printing I’ve checked out what’s available for mobile apps and everyone wants us to subscribe for monthly fees. As much as I sculpt it’s far more cost effective to just buy a 3D scanner. Sucks but true.
thank you for this video, i was doing some mental gymnastics on how to hollow out the model to fit some electronics and in an other then painstakeingly measuring everything and modeling it in a 3d tool (which i never did before) the only other thing i could think of was scanning, but where to start? you gave me some starting points here for my project. Great ! The KI scanner seems to fit my expection on a scan. I really was thinking of buying an 3DMaker Moose pro or Creality Raptor 3D-scaner and came along over this video at finding out wich is the best 3-D-Scaner for hobby&home usage. I still don´t know wich one is the best but seems i could get all for free now with that website and a mobile phone :)

I tried the MakerWorld AI Scanner. It gave me very good results, however, it does not capture the surface image texture. The model is without color, which is fine for 3D printing, but not for photoscanning objects for rendering. For that, I've had pretty good results from MagiScan. I figured out a technique for improving models from MagiScan in Blender using the image texture as a displacement map, first subdividing, then displacing, and decimating to reduce the face count. It adds a lot of detail to the original scan. This can't be done with MakerWorld AI Scanner because it doesn't create a UV map.

They also need a powerful computer since they don't do web based rendering. Sent the Ferret back some time ago when it came out...just didn't work. Now they got the Otter and the Raptor...still waiting for more reviews and might get one 2.nd hand some day. Maybe we get infrared scanning integrated into phones some day....the Lidar option in the iphone 12+ upwards from a still just for playing around....works with Polycam and realityscan. You left out LumaAI.

Always try to use local computing if possible. A good PC setup (not a super expensive rig but one normal people can afford) should be able to handle the work load. Cloud computing leads to subscription grifting.
I dont do a lot of 3D scanning but when I do I just take the photos and upload to Meshroom on my laptop, I have learned that very busy objects just don't look well in a scan or a 3D print, my best success was some brake/clutch levers I scanned and printed out in Nylon CF for a friend. If anyone wishes to comment that this is dangerous, don't bother! the levers were tested and well, we couldn't break them.
Thank you for the detailed and thorough review. I have a boring object to scan: a battery cover for a remote control. As you can imagine it is almost flat, with some round shape and a notch that locks the battery cover into the remote itself. What would be the best way to scan it? in your review you didn't specify android, iphone or ipad? did you check across these too?
I've been looking into scanning apps with photos that can be taken with any camera... and the finished scans have to be functionally identical and working parts when they're finished (CAD measurable and modifiable)... but I just haven't had any luck.
When it comes to photogrammetry, I also had very good experiences with “3DF Zephyr FREE”. However, this is not a mobile app but it is 100% free. No matter whether 1 scan or 100,000 scans. Up to 50 images per object, the higher the resolution, the better the result. The program has also mapped the finest structure in the leather (and also flaws) from the dashboard and incorporated it into the mesh.
Qlone: You have a pattern that registers where the camera is in 3D space, you rotate the camera, not the object! As for scale: The software doesn't know if you are walking around a ship in dry dock or viewing bacteria under a microscope. Rescaling things is a fundimental of 3D.
Correct on both accounts. I probably should have made the paper concept clearer, but it was annoying it didn't work and their response was to "get an iPhone." Also, I just wish the scale could be closer to 1:1, that's why I liked the 'idea' of Qlone. And yes, I should have commented it's just 1's and 0's, so scale isn't a major factor, just kind of annoying to have to get it right after the fact. Thanks for watching and keeping me on track!

i had the same thought, but I only have FDM. Still, if you start with a "poor" or low quality scan, unless you're REALLY into Blender or something, it's going to come out the same no matter what. Although... maybe I could use this as an excuse for resin....??? 🤔😜
I have had great luck with openscan! It's a little different than the types reviewed here, but I use it on a weekly basis for scanning small things that would otherwise be super time-consuming to model.
I tried a number of ways that didn't make the video, even after contacting the company. I'm waiting for an update and hopefully it'll fix the Android version... or at least, my Galaxy S24+. I really want it to work since I think that mat could be a game changer. And that's why I included it even though I didn't get it to work. Thanks for watching!
As a 3D artist I was actually interested in scanning before I thought of printing. My first attempt was with the Microsoft Kinect. It was pretty horrible.
LOL. Yeah, I tried it as well and total fail. I know a number of people online have it working, but after a few hours of searching, finding drivers and stuff, I gave up. Thanks!
Thank you for this video, I have been needing an alternative to Magiscan for a while. Quick question, how do you cut off the bottom (excess scanned areas) of the model? That's my biggest issue with Magiscan, is that it scans the whole plane that I put my model on.
Easiest way is the slicer. Make sure it's standing straight up and use the Cut tool to slice it off, or you'll have to rotate the slicer and try to guess as to what's level. If your slicer lets you drop it below the build plate, you can slice it that way and just use the Cut tool right on the build plate. You'll probably end up with holes, ie... non-watertight, so be sure to run a repair. Most slicers fix that now. Good luck!
I have been trying to find an affordable, easy to use, scanning app, for personal use, for years now. Things have come a long way since I first started looking. I have a model I want to scan and print at a larger scale - new to 3D modelling so would help me get a much more accurate results. The first program I saw that would do this is way out of budget.
If you have to sign up for a monthly subscription you may as well save a lot of money and buy a dedicated scanner that will also do a much better job. The free apps looked like they did a decent enough scan for a lot of things. Maybe I wasn't paying attention but was there not any buy it once options? Were they actually all subscription or free?
RealityScan is FREE, and Magiscan does have a Lifetime option that I would rather spend on a dedicated scanner of $399. Qlone was the best by far at $19.99, but I couldn't use it on Android, which is why you may have missed it. Thanks!

Oops! I thought I mentioned it... I started with a Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, but then had to start over with a new phone, the Galaxy S24+. Results were identical between the two phones, though.
Good question! I had the same thought, but I can only assume it's advertising for their brand. Or it could be that this is a "testing" ground for a later, more advanced Pay version.
They do a lot of community building projects to entice people to move to their platform and I can say as a person in that platform, dear lord does it make a difference and make things easier to the point of I don't even consider buying filament from other sources any longer. Their tight integrations within their MakerWorld for built in print profiles for each printer and RFID tags for each filament means I can see a model, click and print it with 100% success rate every time, every filament (from them). I've literally never had a failed print yet in my first 200~ prints. I chalk this up to staying inside of that ecosystem. It's close to why Apple products work well together and they have so many "free" services. It makes you want to stay in that platform for the combined benefits of ease of use/convenience.
EM3d was not mentioned and its the best 3d scanning app by far because it uses the IR camera in the FRONT of the iphone which is much better for small objects. And only costs $6 to export to OBJ or STL. The rear LIDAR is good for large objects, not so much for small ones.
Thanks for letting us know! I know that the Lidar and IR is an area the iPhone is ahead of Android, so hopefully this is a good alternative for you iOS users. Thanks again!
Isn't there some 3D scanners that use the LIDAR rather than the camera? I think this would give you much better results. Of course you'd need an iPhone, I think?
Probably a dedicated scanner would be the way to go. I did look at Arloopa but it's more for Augmented Reality stuff, like for Real Estate. That may work? Good luck!
Not that I saw, but I wasn't going "full in" on any of the apps. I presume most of those types of settings would be in the Pro (ie... Paid) versions. But, since it's all 1's and 0's, scaling doesn't seem to make a difference in quality, thankfully.

Nice thing is the heavy use of the Apple spatial volume building from their AR Kit is working behind the scenes. It not only uses regular photogrammetry, it also combines that with LiDAR, motion sensors, and GPS to dial in the geometry as it captures more. And it’s all calculated on device as well.
I would love to scan a 1/32 model of a RF-4B Phantom jet , enlarging it to 1/12 or 1/8 scale. Then add canards to the front making a mold for an R/C scale model of a YRF-4E, 62-12200. Seems the original plane has been condemned to storage at WPAFB , well it went in for new paint about 12 years ago, was moved to storage after I offered to get some brushes from the shed and come help paint it , yep next day it's status changed ..truth. now one person at the base was kind enough to send me some photos ....but during those 12 years this retiree, got old, it happens if your lucky .take care .
Wow! That would be an awesome project. If you could scan it, I would definitely recommend a more robust 3D scanner. If you only have pics, you might be able to use a Pic to 3D converter like MakerWorld has, but I've found that NONE of them really work great... yet. Also, you're not old... just wiser! Iphone has a time-of-flight sensor. (my android to but the app does not use it) I use a Realsense from intel and actualy make real 3d scans :P (i think thats what most "cheap" 3d scanner's anyways )

It's not surprising the print size varies, without calibration the software has no idea of the size of the object.

Have you ever thought about using the Xbox 360 kinect? It's big and bulky, but there are downloads for a 3d printed handle and software for scanning.

As you can imagine it is almost flat, with some round shape and a notch that locks the battery cover into the remote itself. What would be the best way to scan it? in your review you didn't specify android, iphone or ipad? did you check across these too?

I've been looking into scanning apps with photos that can be taken with any camera... and the finished scans have to be functionally identical and working parts when they're finished (CAD measurable and modifiable)... but I just haven't had any luck.
When it comes to photogrammetry, I also had very good experiences with “3DF Zephyr FREE”.
However, this is not a mobile app but it is 100% free. No matter whether 1 scan or 100,000 scans.
Up to 50 images per object, the higher the resolution, the better the result. The program has also mapped the finest structure in the leather (and also flaws) from the dashboard and incorporated it into the mesh.
i've noticed that sometimes you need to switch between inches and mm values in slicer to view actual size of models.

I used a kinect to take a scan of my wife, cleaned it up, printed and painted it. Now she hates it lmao.
I did the same thing! I turned it into a sculpture that sits in the kitchen now. By mixing it up a little bit she has come to really love it.

Qlone: You have a pattern that registers where the camera is in 3D space, you rotate the camera, not the object!
As for scale: The software doesn't know if you are walking around a ship in dry dock or viewing bacteria under a microscope. Rescaling things is a fundimental of 3D.
Correct on both accounts. I probably should have made the paper concept clearer, but it was annoying it didn't work and their response was to "get an iPhone." Also, I just wish the scale could be closer to 1:1, that's why I liked the 'idea' of Qlone. And yes, I should have commented it's just 1's and 0's, so scale isn't a major factor, just kind of annoying to have to get it right after the fact. Thanks for watching and keeping me on track!

i had the same thought, but I only have FDM. Still, if you start with a "poor" or low quality scan, unless you're REALLY into Blender or something, it's going to come out the same no matter what. Although... maybe I could use this as an excuse for resin....??? 🤔😜
How do you also scan inside the object to get the internal lip inside with these Android apps?
For that small features you could use openscan.
I have had great luck with openscan! It's a little different than the types reviewed here, but I use it on a weekly basis for scanning small things that would otherwise be super time-consuming to model.
With the Qlone, you should move your object but move the camera around it, because they need the background for reference!
I tried a number of ways that didn't make the video, even after contacting the company. I'm waiting for an update and hopefully it'll fix the Android version... or at least, my Galaxy S24+. I really want it to work since I think that mat could be a game changer. And that's why I included it even though I didn't get it to work. Thanks for watching!

As a 3D artist I was actually interested in scanning before I thought of printing. My first attempt was with the Microsoft Kinect. It was pretty horrible.

Thank you for this video, I have been needing an alternative to Magiscan for a while. Quick question, how do you cut off the bottom (excess scanned areas) of the model? That's my biggest issue with Magiscan, is that it scans the whole plane that I put my model on.
Easiest way is the slicer. Make sure it's standing straight up and use the Cut tool to slice it off, or you'll have to rotate the slicer and try to guess as to what's level. If your slicer lets you drop it below the build plate, you can slice it that way and just use the Cut tool right on the build plate. You'll probably end up with holes, ie... non-watertight, so be sure to run a repair. Most slicers fix that now. Good luck!

I have been trying to find an affordable, easy to use, scanning app, for personal use, for years now.
Things have come a long way since I first started looking. There is still room for improvement, but some of these are worth the investment, for me.

I have a model I want to scan and print at a larger scale - new to 3D modelling so would help me get a much more accurate results. The first program I saw that would do this is way out of budget.

If you have to sign up for a monthly subscription you may as well save a lot of money and buy a dedicated scanner that will also do a much better job. The free apps looked like they did a decent enough scan for a lot of things.
Maybe I wasn't paying attention but was there not any buy it once options? Were they actually all subscription or free?
RealityScan is FREE, and Magiscan does have a Lifetime option that I would rather spend on a dedicated scanner of $399. Qlone was the best by far at $19.99, but I couldn't use it on Android, which is why you may have missed it. Thanks!

Could you tell us which phone you were using in your tests?
Oops! I thought I mentioned it... I started with a Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, but then had to start over with a new phone, the Galaxy S24+. Results were identical between the two phones, though.

Good question! I had the same thought, but I can only assume it's advertising for their brand. Or it could be that this is a "testing" ground for a later, more advanced Pay version.
They do a lot of community building projects to entice people to move to their platform and I can say as a person in that platform, dear lord does it make a difference and make things easier to the point of I don't even consider buying filament from other sources any longer. Their tight integrations within their MakerWorld for built in print profiles for each printer and RFID tags for each filament means I can see a model, click and print it with 100% success rate every time, every filament (from them). I've literally never had a failed print yet in my first 200~ prints. I chalk this up to staying inside of that ecosystem. It's close to why Apple products work well together and they have so many "free" services. It makes you want to stay in that platform for the combined benefits of ease of use/convenience.
EM3d was not mentioned and its the best 3d scanning app by far because it uses the IR camera in the FRONT of the iphone which is much better for small objects. And only costs $6 to export to OBJ or STL. The rear LIDAR is good for large objects, not so much for small ones.

Probably a dedicated scanner would be the way to go. I did look at Arloopa but it's more for Augmented Reality stuff, like for Real Estate. That may work? Good luck!

Not that I saw, but I wasn't going "full in" on any of the apps. I presume most of those types of settings would be in the Pro (ie... Paid) versions. But, since it's all 1's and 0's, scaling doesn't seem to make a difference in quality, thankfully.

Nice thing is the heavy use of the Apple spatial volume building from their AR Kit is working behind the scenes. It not only uses regular photogrammetry, it also combines that with LiDAR, motion sensors, and GPS to dial in the geometry as it captures more. And it’s all calculated on device as well.

I would love to scan a 1/32 model of a RF-4B Phantom jet , enlarging it to 1/12 or 1/8 scale. Then add canards to the front making a mold for an R/C scale model of a YRF-4E, 62-12200. Seems the original plane has been condemned to storage at WPAFB , well it went in for new paint about 12 years ago, was moved to storage after I offered to get some brushes from the shed and come help paint it , yep next day it's status changed ..truth. now one person at the base was kind enough to send me some photos ....but during those 12 years this retiree, got old, it happens if your lucky .take care .
Wow! That would be an awesome project. If you could scan it, I would definitely recommend a more robust 3D scanner. If you only have pics, you might be able to use a Pic to 3D converter like MakerWorld has, but I've found that NONE of them really work great... yet. Also, you're not old... just wiser! Nope, no Lidar. Only iPhone at this time has that (I think). I'm on a Samsung Galaxy S24+ with multiple cameras on it, so that helps some.

Iphone has a time-of-flight sensor. (my android to but the app does not use it)
I use a Realsense from intel and actualy make real 3d scans :P (i think thats what most "cheap" 3d scanner's anyways )
