  • The new K-drama "Do You Like Brahms?" is based on the mythical love triangle between Clara and Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms. Here's what the show got right, and what it left out.
Brahms's Piano Sonata 3 in F minor (recording from IMSLP imslp.org/wiki/Piano_Sonata_N...)
    Information from the following sources:
Clara Schumann: The Artist and the Woman (Reich)
Clara Schumann: An Artist's Life, Based on Diaries and Letters (Litzmann)
    Johannes Brahms: A Biography (Swafford)
The Letters of Clara Schumann and Johannes Brahms 1853-1896 (Litzmann)
Schumann: The Face and the Masks (Chernaik)

They say personality is formed at an early age. I may be wrong about this but I have always felt that Brahms' experiences working in the tavern/brothels as an adolescent scarred him for life and prevented his ability to maintain a romantic/sexual relationship with any woman. I feel that it is likely he was sexually abused in this environment but we truly do not know what he experienced or the trauma he endured.

Bernstein said "'Schumann (Robert) is the ghost that haunts Brahms' music." And Clara was the woman that haunted his life. Did this have affect on B's music? Dudh. So right CS channel on the emotions here. Thanks for the lovely vid.

Bernstein’s opinions on Clara Schumann were also rather problematic sadly. He referred to her as a “syndrome” that Johannes had to overcome to write his first symphony. 😝 Which in truth was the opposite-she was the motivation and mentor who encouraged him to success and fame. But… men like Bernstein are terrified of the truth about a powerful woman’s influence & genius. 😁

I have spent almost 60 years playing and reading about Brahms. It is my opinion that , in the end it was he who decided not to marry Clara. There was the age difference which mirrored that of his parents. And his parents were not happily married. Combine that with his total devotion to music and his ability to be sexually satisfied with prostitutes, well, these are the reasons for his aversion to marriage.

Clara also already had 7 children and didn't want more. She wanted her performing career and Johannes wanted her to stop. She didn't want to get married either. It was mutual.

I think that's why so many of us love Brahms so much. We all at some time in our lives feel a little like him

Excellent video. One point I would dispute however, is that Clara was the most famous pianist in Europe mid 19th century. By far and away it was Liszt.

She was perhaps the greatest fenale pianist. Chopin said she was the only woman in Germany who could play his works

How can I read Clara Schumman's diary? I've done some research but wasn't exactly successful

Clara Schumann’s diaries are published in the Berthold Litzmann biography of 1908. There’s an cheap ebook available of the English translation.

What is this fascination with the unfulfilled love life of Johannes Brahms? I am a huge fan of his music, but this sort of thing happens to people *_all_* the time. Besides that, few real details exist about his personal life and so it hardly seems worthwhile making it the focus of discussions about him. JMHO.

Most of what few details exist about Johannes Brahms's life come from the two surviving volumes of his letters to Clara Schumann. The main historical source about his feelings toward his own music and compositional process come from things he wrote to her. He burned everything else. So the majority of what we know about him relates to his relationship with Clara. That's why it's almost impossible to talk about Johannes without also talking about Clara.

We will ever really know how far the love between Clara and Brahms went and maybe it's not our business. I have several hypothetical theories. It may well be that Clara decided she wuld rather be Clara Schumnann than Clara Brahms. Then Brahms in all his love affairs withdrew from marriage; he evidently didn't want to be tied up in a domestic situation. I remember distinctly that to one of these women - I forget her name - he suggested she should simply have an affair with him but without marriage. She was offended and withdrew. it would not have been easy to be his wife. He had bouts when he could be very aggressive and nasty even to Clara. In his later life in Vienna the Viennese accepted his rudeness and he could leave a party asking, "Is there anyone I have not offended?" His love came out in his music in which he drew out all his inner self for us, his listerners.

“She would always love Schumann more than him” I mean who wouldn’t yes Schumann was complicated but then you listen to his music and it’s 40 times better than Brahms and it’s like yeah how can she not Schumann was clearly her favorite even with Brahms arrival and that makes me happy in a way because I also would choose Schumann.

Wow I need a movie on Clara everyone was obsessed with her and she was more talented than Brahms and Schumann which makes the situation funnier.

  •  14 วันที่ผ่านมา

Brahms was everything Clara wanted Schumann to be in the sense that he was stable, healthy and I guess conventionally attractive at the time and then Schumann was sad, deeply disturbed yet a genius and above Brahms in my opinion when it comes to compositions.

I don’t really get the infatuation Schumann had with Brahms I wonder if he wanted the stability he had in terms of mental state that he personally lacked. Either way I hope Schumann knew that he was way better and absolutely they should’ve been fighting over his attention instead 😇.

This just shows me why Sergei Rachmaninoff is above everyone else yes he married his first cousin strange…..and scary but his romantic life was not a mess and he was extremely good looking, talented and the best composer ever and when it came to romance it was just not really his main focus clearly given his choice of marriage…..
