Thanks to Karen M. Bottge for her 2005 article Brahms' Wiegenlied and the Maternal Voice
At 1:40 they are actually singing the third movement of the Third Symphony, not what is listed.
I was about to post that. What else is inaccurate here?
Wonderful storytelling. There needs to be more of these!
So that’s why I always cried as a little kid whenever I heard the lullaby.
Very touching story!! His love reaches the highest level.. love that does not want to possess.
I actually researched and wrote about this briefly in a book I wrote...so it is nice to see the story again. This clip was very well done! Bravo!
I stumbled upon this, but I couldn't just leave after watching without saying how amazing this historical story is. Thanks for taking the time to make this great short film story of it!
Wow, how beautiful. Thanks you for posting this. So even Brahms get inspiration from others. His lullaby is truly magic, when my kids were fidgety, clearly tired and sleepy, but not wanting to sleep for some reason, without fail, I can sing this (in broken German) and put them to sleep. One verse of the English translation of the song says "if God wills, then you'll wake" and that always makes me nervous, so I just sing it in German as broken as it may be. I was thought to sing this in German in my voice class.
This was amazing story telling. Thank you for making this short film. It is so wonderful to know the background of one of the most popular lullabies. It is so achingly beautiful and tragic. Thank you for sharing!
Brilliant. So beautifully done.
Lovely story!
This gave me goosebumps. Love the music and the storytelling.
Very poignant! Tom you are amazing as ever. 😥 What deep sadness Johannes must have felt.

Hmm... so many people say Clara Schumann was the love of his life...
damn, i feel for johannes. hit too close to home
I echo Rob's and River's praise. And add that it was effectively poignant.;) Thank you, Tom, et le CBC.
This is a charming story but seems very inaccurate in places. 10 years before 1868 Brahms was 25 and barely getting started on his climb to fame. He had not even written his first piano concerto which got very mixed reviews. 1868 was when he completed his German Requiem, first performed in 1869, which was considered by many the composition that finally brought him widespread recognition. His first symphony was 8 years away. The choral piece is actually the theme of the third movement of his third symphony, not the second of his second.

I love it! Now I know the story behind this lullaby, But something's missing. what about the lyrics? I thought it has words in english and german. Why is it sung on 🎵lalalala🎶?
