  • Robert Schumann - Kinderscenen Op. 15, Scenes From Childhood, 1838.
    - Nº 1. Von fremden Ländern und Menschen (Of Foreign Lands and Peoples) • Schumann - "Kinderszen...
    - Nº 7. Träumerei (Dreaming) • Schumann - Träumerei, ...
    - Complete performance: • Schumann - Kinderszene...
When Schumann wrote Kinderszenen (Scenes from Childhood), he was deeply in love with Clara Wieck, soon to become his wife over the objections of her overbearing father. The composer worked at a feverish pace, composing these pieces in just several days. Actually, he wrote about thirty small pieces, but trimmed them to the thirteen that comprise the set. They are fairly simple in terms of execution, and, of course, their subject matter deals with the world of children. Schumann, however, pointed out that they were not intended for children.
The seventh item here, "Träumerei" (Dreaming), is the most popular in the set. It is a depiction of childhood innocence, vulnerability and gentleness. Many pianists have interpreted this piece in a sentimental, almost saccharine way, while others (Horowitz notably) have insisted on a more objective approach. The main theme is sweetly innocent and sentimental, clearly representing the adult Schumann's fond view of aspects of his own childhood. The melody is unforgettable, the harmonies simple, but distinctive, and the overall mood dreamy and soothing. Of the many themes associated with children -- that in Brahms' Lullaby, several in Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf -- the "Träumerei" melody is among the most memorable. The whole piece lasts under three minutes, but is the longest in the Kinderszenen set.
Most pianists who play Kinderszenen rarely excerpt it, but when an individual piece from it is played by them in concert, "Träumerei" is usually their choice. Horowitz was known to play it as an encore on several occasions.
From spirited games to sleeping and dreaming, Kinderszenen captures the joys and sorrows of childhood in a series of musical snapshots. Schumann described the titles as "nothing more than delicate hints for execution and interpretation". The Kinderszenen are a touching tribute to the eternal, universal memories and feelings of childhood from a nostalgic adult perspective; unlike a number of Schumann's collections of piano character pieces (e.g.Album for the Young,Op.68), the Kinderszenen are not intended to be played by children. Schumann claimed that the picturesque titles attached to the pieces were added as an afterthought in order to provide subtle suggestions to the player, a model Debussy followed decades later in his Preludes. Almost all of the Kinderszenen are miniature ternary (ABA) forms.

You remind me that I have read (but not verified myself) that Schubert, questioned about writing uncharacteristically devotional music (Ave Maria) said he never forced emotion when composing. All the same, for musicians studying for years to learn how to communicate emotion there must be a fine line between projecting what they genuinely feel and just providing drama. @liloukulele5238 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

@@berlay9204 Grade 3 piano generally corresponds with your fifth year of piano as a kid (oftentimes the start of the third year of piano as an adult, depending on how hard you work).
Preparatory, Grade 1 and grade 2 piano are all about the beginner stages. You learn how to read notes and rhythms with increasing complexity. Once you finish this level, you should be comfortable with most notes on the staff, interval identification should be quick, and you should be reasonably skilled with the most common rhythms.
In grade 1 and 2, you start developing hand independence and style - like the ability to pull off louds and softs in an emotive way, or play staccatos and accents.
So once that’s out of the way, we hit grade 3, which is the first intermediate level. Grade 3 is considered “early intermediate”, and everything between levels 3-6 is considered intermediate. Once you hit Grade 7, that’s when things start getting advanced.
Basically, by Grade 3, you should be comfortable with all the basics. So in Grade 3 piano, instead of drilling rhythms and note reading, we get to start spending more time on theory, history, and interpretation.

The beauty of Horowitz' playing , and that's why he's so respected, is the power he has to "voice" the notes, he does that like nobody. In certain parts he plays the song smoothly and suddenly he plays fortissimo. I've never seen somebody else doing that like Horowitz, it's fantastic

    • @ErikHuizinga

Not only that, but he masters the art of voicing notes so perfectly... sometimes it doesn't matter if the piece says to play a note or part ff or pp, he can do it the other way around and yet make it feel like he's still playing what the composer meant the piece to sound like. How good is it that thanks to pop music, people are connected by music again? Very sad to see that the comment section has been polluted by many clueless BTS/Taehyung fans... Always linking their idols to everything and everyone... For your own knowledge, Vladimir Horowitz, the old man playing the piano, has been one of the greatest pianist of all times, worldwide famous and respected for his genius, technic and style. He wouldn't have needed (and doesn't need actually) another artist to get the recognition he deserves (and actually got). Associating him with some "lower ranked" artists like BTS or Taehyung is I think of great disrespect to Horowitz. And I don't try to insult nor blame BTS, I am just statig facts. I am even sure the members of BTS would agree with it, humble as they are. For those of you who are genuinely interested in men like Horowitz, I can only recommend you to listen to Arthur Rubinstein, who is considered to have been the greatest interpret of Chopin.
    Cheers.

    • @JoanKSX
      @JoanKSX 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

I don't see issue here (except that those fan comments aren't very useful as there're all the same)
It's nice that a very popular artist bring light to this great piano master to a public that would naturally not listen to classical music
Also stating BTS as "lower rank" artists isn't objective. They are a part of showbiz, it's a whole different category. It's like comparing ballet to hip-hop, it's dance but with a complete different approach.

@@shwetasaini6140 for someone who is 2-3 years into piano it should be manageable to hit the notes, but a challenge to play it well. It has multiple voices to pay attention too and also you have to keep in mind phrasing and dynamics. Probably a person with 4-5 years experience could probably pull this off pretty well with proper guidance as it is only a page long and has many repeating parts. So basically, technically challenging, not really if you have some experience. Musically difficult? Hell yes

Reminds me of my Nana Elisabeth in Lancashire UK, in the 1960's/70's, who had a manually wind-up device (?) that played this masterpiece over & over (money was tight for her) and we would listen to this together, as i had severs asthma, through parental smoking, and she nursed me through some tough/frightening times, playing this (not knowing what it was or who'd composed it).
They were surreal times . . . . . flitting between life & death, calmed only by my Nana, and this mesmerising piece
60+years later, thanks to modern technology, i heard those first few bars for the first time again. . . . . . . and instantly wept, and wept uncontrollable tears of joys . . . . . as i was with her again, for a brief moment
    Music is amazing !
RIP, Elizabeth Mercer (I love you, but probably never told you) ❤

This is and will be forever the best piano song that I've ever heard.

Every time I listen to this great master playing this piece, I am allowed to be brought into a place where I can truly appreciate this world. There is only pure enjoyment, nothing else.
So often I am moulded to survive this realistic world but only moments like this I can dream to be someone greater than I am adapted to be. Thank you, Maestro Horowitz.

So pure, so great, so deep. There is no other like Horowitz for this piece. Truly sings with his soul.

Virgin Rock brought me here from her analysis of the introductory piano piece in Jethro Tull's "Locomotive Breath". This is a beautiful piece of music, and I love the performance by Vladimir Horowitz.

This is so far my favourite interpretation of this piece. For me no words can be described on how beautifully it was played .I can really feel the nostalgia in this interpretation . It actually made me cry. T.T
