DO YOU LIKE BRAHMS? - The TRUE story of the mythical Brahms-Clara-Robert Schumann love triangle
มุมมอง 19K4 ปีที่แล้ว
The new K-drama "Do You Like Brahms?" is based on the mythical love triangle between Clara and Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms. Here's what the show got right, and what it left out. Brahms's Piano Sonata 3 in F minor (recording from IMSLP imslp.org/wiki/Piano_Sonata_No.3,_Op.5_(Brahms,_Johannes)) Information from the following sources: Clara Schumann: The Artist and the Woman (Reich) Clara ...
Your undifferentiated, obviously feministic driven praise of Clara Schumann is annoying - only her canonization is missing in your sermon. And besides: Was Mozart, with whom Robert Schumann compared her, really that advanced as a child? Goethe said the following when he compared the young Mendelssohn with the young Mozart: 'What he (Felix Mendelssohn) is already achieving now may be compared to the Mozart of that time as the developed language of an adult compared to the babbling of a child'.
ok, I suppose I shouldn't bicker here but- really- die Lorelei? with that melody?? and, of course, the -really- quite conventional Romantic harmony salad serving as acoustic in the background of this video is a pointed reminder that Clara-conventional-romanticist-Schumann could not for the life of her understand what the fuss about Liszt's b-minor sonata was all about.... RIP
So, two questions for y'all: 1) Do you think the triangle gave fodder to Schumann's collapse 6 months after Brahms moved in?, and 2) Do you think Brahms' finally giving up on Clara for marriage was timed with his transformation from gorgeous Adonis to grizzly bear mode in appearance? Cheers and thanks.
I thought I knew a lot about Brahms but didn’t know the 3rd Symphony was a gift to Clara. ❤
Wonderfully informative. Thank you so much for posting this video and for having a channel devoted to Clara Schumann - truly a musical genius in her own right. You have given credit to her and it was long overdue that she be honored. I feel she would be pleased with your efforts here. Brava!
Thx from South Korea
Lovely presentation of amazing facts. Looking forward to your book.
@@robertdyson4216 thank you so much! I’ll have some book news for you soon on the substack newsletter…
I’ve been saying for years that Clara was the greatest child prodigy since Mozart. According to Schumann she was a finished pianist at age 14. There was nothing more anyone could teach her about playing the piano.
@@raymondgood6555 True. Robert also compared Clara to Paganini when she was 13.
Thank you for sharing ❤
@@lkmyung31 Thank you for watching ❤️
was just listening to brahms sonata for 2 pianos a loving gift he wrote to be played with her I think
@@ziegunerweiser I’m not certain but most likely yes!
Thank you for another informative video! 🎹✨
You’re so welcome!
Does make me wonder about the relationship between them. About the limitations that social constraints of the period placed on them. Love all three of them for the gifts they left us.
Thank you! And beautifully done.
I was trying to think of a companion piece for Clara’s b minor Romanze in a recital - you may have found one for me! I’d never noticed the link with the Brahms Intermezzo
Wonderful! I think they go together very well. Happy to help. Good luck with your recital!
Wonderful,thank you!!!
Simple, one is great, one isn't! I is quite obvious that Clara Schumann is uncomparable to a fictitional character from a Korean Drama, so it is good that someone pointed out the original characters of the story. I personally adore Clara more than Robert, I don't understand why she is so underrated ! Not to mention the fact that she is also a great pedagogy, which had made a great influence to the 20th century, the greatest century for piano recording.
If it wasn't for Joachim, Brahms and the Schumanns may have never met.
You're back!! I was looking for your video about the letters Brahms wrote to Clara but I can't find it, was it deleted?
What’s the music with this short?
Piano Concerto No. 1 in A Minor, Op. 7: II. Romanze. Andante non troppo con grazia
Wtfff is this chaNnel about??go watch more korean love drama dont waste ur time posting this kind of videps and wasted my time thanks
I don’t buy this at all. Brahms was already an accomplished composer when he met the Schumanns. He was a very original musical genius. Robert Schumann heralded his genius to the world immediately upon making his acquaintance and before he collapsed into madness. Clara Schumann was a famous pianist but she never achieved fame as a composer. Yes, she shared her thoughts on some of his compositions, and she encouraged him in his work, but to call her a “mentor” is really too much. Brahms didn’t have a mentor and didn’t need one. I think that you really exaggerate her musical influence on Brahms. She was a talented composer but she didn’t teach him how to write music. That’s ridiculous.
I never said Clara "taught" Johannes how to write music. That would be ridiculous. When he arrived at her house, he'd already composed multiple sonatas. But if you listened to nothing I actually said, check your dates. He arrived at her house in 1853. And he did not publish his first works until 1854, solo piano and vocal works. Orchestral works and fugues were still YEARS away for him. Clara published her first orchestral work almost 20 years before that, in 1835, her first fugues in 1845. She knew more things about composing than he did. Insisting that Johannes showed up at age 20 already knowing everything he needed to know about composing, needing no help from anyone, is hard core genius myth - i.e. a denial of Johannes's being a human being who needed to learn from and study with other composers in order to write his larger, more complex famous works.
I recently discovered your website and have been very intrigued with all of your essays about the relationship between J and C. I would be interested in reading their surviving letters and diary entries. Your conclusions make a lot of sense. Thanks for clearing this up for us.
Thanks so much! The lack of publication/ English translation of the letters is part of the reason why their relationship is so misunderstood. The only translation is out of print & ABRIDGED by half. Most music libraries will have it but the abridgment emphasizes the “love relationship” & CUTS a lot of their professional discussions. If you read German-that complete publication is easily found. It’s even in ebook on Amazon.
Wonderful! Loved it!!!!
Thank youuu! I’m so glad you liked it!
Thank you!
the greatest love story of all time I still imagine a teenage Robert seeing a 9 year old Clara destroy every kind of music imaginable, some considered unplayable and don't even get me started about and my obsession with Brahms. I am currently reading vol 2 of her diary.
You’re reading her diaries??? The Litzmann? Hard core. That’s ultimate Clara fan land🙌🏻
yep Clara Schumann: An Artist's Life Based on Material Found in Diaries and Letters - Vol II by Berthold Litzmann We talked about my obsession before with Brahms and the many related books books I have, probably 10 biographies including Jan Swafford, also The Schumanns and Johannes Brahms: The Memoirs of Eugenie Schumann Johannes Brahms: Life and Letters by Johannes Brahms (Author), Styra Avins (Translator), Josef Eisinger (Translator) Letters From and to Joseph Joachim by Joseph Joachim and for the most part I found what I was looking for when I got this DVD The Great Courses / Great Masters: Brahms-His Life and Music with Professor Robert Greenberg I have pictures of Brahms, Joachim, Robert and Clara on my wall I look at every day
@@ziegunerweiserYes, but do you play their music?
not as well or as often as I should my friend
Thank you! Clara deserves much more credit for Brahms’ career (and for her own accomplishments) than history has allowed her.
Yes she really does!
Thanks for bringing to light one of the true geniuses of that time...Clara Schumann...
Absolutely.
Clara Schumann was the type of woman men adore. A highly successful woman that had 8 children. They don't make them like that anymore.
q
thank you :)
as a German I love to learn more about this amazing composer and musician. thank you so much. :)
They really really respected Schumann
A bit of a tyrant?? What an understatement!
And an episode telling about Brahms relationship with Julie Schumann??
Uh there was no "relationship" with Julie Schumann. Johannes had a mega crush on her - maybe was in love with her - but Julie was in love with an Italian count, who she married, with no idea Johannes ever even had a thing for her. But all this was fifteen years AFTER Robert died. When Johannes moved into the Schumann house, Julie was only 9 years old.
@@claraschumannchannel by relationship, I did not mean physical relationship, I only meant the details of their lives as related to each other. I think I read Julie is buried in Pere Lachaise Cemetery , Paris, but I don’t know why.
Yes I like Brahms. ❤️
Her "Konzertsatz in F Minor" is one of my favorites.
Clara Schumann and her husband regularly met with Brahms, Mendelssohn and others to discuss Bach. Even Wagner respected her knowing that she didn't like him as a person. She wasn't just Europe's most beloved pianist and a fantastic composer, she also was a widely accepted theoretical scholar in a field dominated by men. (I'm not a feminist, btw)
Intonation got me ridiculously distracted
I don't much like it when Wieck is stuck into her name. She made it clear in a letter to her future husband that she would be happy just to be known as Clara Schumann. I love all her piano works as played by Josef de Beenhouver (spelling?) Special a favourites of mine are the Piano Trio and the Piano Concerto. If I were a concert pianist this work would definitely in my repertoire. Too many lovely works for piano to mention all of them but that Nocturne in F major is a favourite of mine not only in Clara's repertoire but in the whole repertoire for piano
Prejudice against women composers . When I play the cd of Clara's Piano Trio and say It is by Schumann people love it, but the moment I mention the woman's name it kind of drops into oblivion. When I played two fugues one by Clara and the other by Bach on the same theme I asked my class to guess which was by whom and they decided unanimoosly that Bach's Fugue was by Clara and hers by him.......
@@felixdevilliers1that is fascinating! Thank you so much for sharing that story.
I’m so glad to hear you’re a fan of Clara Schumann’s music. That’s wonderful! As regards to her name, Clara Wieck was her name for the first 20yrs of her life & was the name printed on her first 11 opuses. I know of no other composer where it would be acceptable to change the name of the composer under which the work was originally published/printed. So I do believe for historical accuracy sake her opuses 1-11 should be listed in programs & texts as by Clara Wieck-Schumann, otherwise it is factually incorrect. Also, of course Clara Schumann loved being a Schumann. She loved carrying her husband’s name, she looked forward to it throughout her engagement with fervor & used it proudly, lovingly all her life. However, there is a distinct diary entry from the week before her marriage “that was my last concert as Clara Wieck & I was sad at heart.” Clara also used “Clara Schumann Geb. Wieck” on many publications & concert posters throughout her marriage & even after. She was very proud of what she achieved as Clara Wieck. It was a name she worked very hard for it to command culture wide, artistic respect internationally. During her life EVERYONE remembered/knew her maiden name, she was THAT famous.
@@claraschumannchannel - I used to have a different Germanic surname, I adopted my mother's surname de Villiers. I wouldn't let anything of mine - even if written at the age of three - be published under any other name.
We will ever really know how far the love between Clara and Brahms went and maybe it's not our business. I have several hypothetical theories. It may well be that Clara decided she wuld rather be Clara Schumnann than Clara Brahms. Then Brahms in all his love affairs withdrew from marriage; he evidently didn't want to be tied up in a domestic situation. I remember distinctly that to one of these women - I forget her name - he suggested she should simply have an affair with him but without marriage. She was offended and withdrew. it would not have been easy to be his wife. He had bouts when he could be very aggressive and nasty even to Clara. In his later life in Vienna the Viennese accepted his rudeness and he could leave a party asking, "Is there anyone I have not offended?" His love came out in his music in which he drew out all his inner self for us, his listerners.
I read a story years ago about a party attended by Clara, Robert and Liszt. Liszt made disparaging remarks about Mendelssohn. Robert, who was a rather large , broad shouldered man for that age, grabbed Liszt by the coat collar, backed him into a wall and told him to not say such things about Mendelssohn, who was viewed by many as the greatest musical genius of that time. Schumann was a mild mannered person, but Mendelssohn was his best friend.
Yes, it's Clara's diary where that story comes from. It happened in her parlor. And Felix Mendelssohn - Clara and Robert's dear dear friend - had only died the year before. It was a very badly done thing for Franz Liszt to insult Felix like that, at that time, knowing full well how Clara and Robert loved and esteemed him.
Another bio of his states there was no grounds for saying they had a love affair . Only referred to as ,friend, unless you have sone papers or letters no one else has seen.😂
She always loved him? Bramhs always knew that? They had 40 years friendship? I’ll tell you? Stop making question marks plz
Can you stop like every statement of your’s making a question.
I read a letter from Brahms to Schumman. He sayied to him he lovers her wife. But say "I love you" in that age is the same what we sayied in Brazil. Tell "my love" is a informal and courtesy way to deal with peoples. Mendelssohn loved so much his elder sister, Mozart and his elder sister looks like two bitches talking one to another. Brahms probably have Clara like a elder sister, mother probably. They act like a Elder son taking care of Schumman kids.
This is a pretty skewed interpretation of history.
Clara wrote a Konzertsatz in f minor. And also a Konzertsatz in a manor?
Excellent video. One point I would dispute however, is that Clara was the most famous pianist in Europe mid 19th century. By far and away it was Liszt.
She was perhaps the greatest fenale pianist. Chopin said she was the only woman in Germany who could play his works
