    I recently was talking to my uncle and he is a musician in Australia. He told me that he wanted to do a deep purple set, so he asked jon lord for his permisson. Insted of granting his permission, he flew over to play with the band. This wasnt to long before he passed. Man what a cool dude

    I think the thing about Tony Banks that makes him stand out is his chords and chord progressions. This guy has a very classical influence and plays around a lot with very unusual bass notes with chords particularly, creating a lot of tension in the music. I feel is he was the soul of Genesis' compositions.

      Kerry Livgren wrote all the different instrumental parts of Kansas' prog compositions on the piano, then taught them to the band members. He was an amazing keyboardist who couldn't read or write music, but was raised listening to classical music and had a great ear for it. Walsh was good on the organ, but his acrobatic antics didn't add to his musical ability, just his showmanship. The songs he wrote were straight-ahead rock, not prog.

    Banks all the way....most impactful, melodic of them all, a genius when combining the Mellotron choirs/strings with an organ or synth lead. Mad, Mad Moon, Suppers Ready, Watchers of the Sky...and on and on. Maybe not lightning fast like an Emerson, Wakeman or Rudess,, but you get the idea. JMO.

    • @arbonne1805
      @arbonne1805 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Melodic - yep, that's it. Tony Banks always had an uncanny knack of penning memorable melodies and keyboard solos you can sing along to.

    • @benavich8
      @benavich8 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@arbonne1805 ....I still get chills when I hear the ending of Entangled with the choirs and flutety type lead. Also, the piano playing on Ripples...that's what separates Banks from the rest, IMO...just so tasteful.

    • @giles7662
      @giles7662 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This is the thing; it's not about technical ability for me in this classification, I'm not concerned with how fast they can play for example. It's about composition, feel and textures, and Tony Banks tops for me. One of his greatest "tricks" is to hold the bass on a progression, the release it, then change it to root.

    Some of my favorites not mentioned: Dave Stewart (Canterbury), Mike Ratledge, David Sancious, George Duke, Brian Auger, Patrick Moraz, Patrice Rushen(!), John Tout, Bernie Worrell, Billy Preston.
    Tony Banks strength is in his use of harmony and great chord changes.
    Rick Wakeman is a great arranger and knows how to use different keyboards effectively. No jazz influences unlike Patrick Moraz. Tony Kaye has a great B3 sound. I've come to appreciate him more over the years.
    There is a "warmth" in Peter Bardens playing that makes the early Camel albums distinct.
    For strictly piano I love McCoy Tyner.

    I want to mention the late, great Lyle Mays. He was not as high profile as a lot of the musicians that you've mentioned, but the music he made with Pat Metheny was phenomenal, both as a co-composer and as a player with the chops to keep up with Pat. As a Kansas City kid, I had the great good fortune to see/hear him many times and he never failed to impress.

      I agree, I love his work. He could go from simple to Mozart complex, and every note was just right (or Wright), and the arrangement and sequence of the notes was just perfect every time. His absence on The Wall is so noticeable. Like John Paul Jones, just so technically perfect that stunning tunes just dripped out of his brain without seeming effort, a sure mark of genius.

    • @robm9999

      I'd argue Rick Wright was the Pink Floyd sound! In so many ways he was essential to everything they released. He created the atmosphere, Gilmour brought the soul and Waters brought the message. A fine writer in his own right as well, and his interplay with Gilmour was very much a match of equals, imo. Will always appreciate the late, and absolutley great, Richard Wright (RIP)!

    Jon Lord, in an interview from the mid 80's, published in Keyboard Magazine, said he saw himself as a prog rocker. He thought there was more to Deep Purple than just the hard rock, or metal element. One thing he was great at was recontextualizing classical music compositional techniques for Deep Purple's music. Listen to the climax of his solo on Burn, where he employs a Baroque period contrapuntal approach to create, what is essentially, a Bach Fugue in a hard rock song. He is one of the all time greats. He also praised Keith Emerson in the same interview.

    John Evan of Jethro Tull did a great job in the time he was with the band. Piano, organ, synthesizers.

    Tony Banks is definitely one of my faves. Good to see Jan Hammer mentioned, also one of my faves. And for guys not mentioned here, I'll add Vangelis, Francis Monkman(especially a master of the harpsichord from Curved Air and Sky), Kit Watkins(Happy the Man and Camel) and last but not least, Claudio Simonetti of Goblin.

    Great stuff guys. Lots of agreement (especially my man George's inclusion of Tigran Hamasyan). Other mentions for me would be Eddie Jobson, David Sancious, Dave Stewart and on the young gun side, Eldar... On the wild card/ criminally underrated side, Billy Payne (Listen to the key work in Day At The Dog Races)... So many greats though...

    Anthony was missed but I always enjoy Rick LaBonte's appearances on SoT and the energy he brings to his discussions. Thanks to Rick, George, Chuck and you, too, Pete, for another great time In The Prog Seat. Was fortunate enough to see Rick Wakeman with Yes in 1974 in a concert where the set included the entire Close To The Edge and Tales From Topographic Oceans. Wakeman had a solo between the two albums. Amazing to see and hear in concert. Also saw ELP in Jacksonville on the Brain Salad Surgery tour near that same time. Another incredible concert. But my friend and I were near some speakers and Emerson hit a note at one point that was so loud and piercing that he and I has to yell our conversation at each other in the car on the way home. So those two are likely my tops for this show. Thanks again to all for the great discussion and cheers to George for his "no softies" line.

    My top favs you guys mentioned but if could hit three outside who were mentioned here.
    1. Don Airey----especially the Colosseum 2 albums with Gary Moore.
    2. Tony Carey--something about his organ sound, i don't know wether he was running it through a pedal but sounded just slightly different and fantastic, and three mini moogs, say no more.
    3.The late Dave Greenfield of The Stranglers, interesting sounds and he could blast the runs. Their first five albums are classics and the closing section of Down In The Sewer-Rats Rally- one of my fav hammond solo's ever.

  • @jamesmartin4294

    Pete, gotta rant a bit about this, particularly considering what a big Zappa fan you are. Chuck had Herbie Hancock in his five, and you and George both had Chick on your lists as 1 or 2. Where, oh where, oh where, is the love for the incredibly versatile, total virtuoso when called for, but perfectly complementary sideman when needed, the great George Duke? He is routinely overlooked by many commentators in many forums. He was a seamless chameleon, perfectly supporting whatever genre he was involved with (and he was involved in MANY), but could melt your face off with his chops and intuition when he stepped into the spotlight. I was so saddened by his death several years ago. A fantastic, apparently unappreciated, and consummate musician. RIP George, and easily in my top 5.
