    bmw blog mechanic takes a look at Wife Johnsons Toyota with our new Thinktool which was interesting to say the least. If you are thinking of buying a Thinktool I would highly recommend that you do.
    I also take a look at an X1 with a B48 thats using a litre of oil every 700km.
    Finally 😀 I show you around a B48 on the engine stand ready to be shipped back for a rebuild.
    Apologies to Kevin Palmer who had made a wonderful comment on the original video 😌 I had to perform a series of edits and accidentally deleted the original video.

      @@allmech_BMW_fault_finding started off with replacing the oil filter housing/oil cooler, all free of charge. Noticed I was losing like 750ml of coolant overnight. (Only big expansion tank loss)
      Now, several days later, the intercooler expansion tank is dropping like 100ml’s a day & the big expansion tank seems to remain at appropriate level but is for sure contaminated. Oil particles inside.
      Pretty odd.
      + when I stop the engine after being on a drive I hear lots of gurgling and fluids circulating & also sounds that are similar to how a goose would sound on helium. Literally. So like, a squeaky goose.
      Any thoughts based on that info?

    Good stuff, Ben. Watching the scan tool on the Toyota it appears to be in closed loop in the first data set shot. I too was surprised with the short term trim values at first but when I saw the long term trim it made sense. Factoring them both puts your total trim less than 5%, no worries on that. Toyota will usually go into closed loop pretty quickly due to the O2 sensor heaters. It surprises me that it uses O2 as an upstream, by that year model here in the states, we used A/F sensors on the upstream on everything pretty much. I’m sure curious if thinktool makes a scanner for here in the states. Keep up the great work!

    question about the b48 vanos system. Where is the vanos central valve located for the exhaust camshaft? i have code 130714. i replaced the exhaust actuator hoping that would take care of it but im st ill getting error code. ISTA says next step if replacing actuator didnt fix the problem is to replace the vanos central valve. But i cant find much info about where these valves are located. the N20 is easy to find being on the front. but the b48 are somewhere in the back but idk where. Thanks for the tour of the b48 that was some good quick info.

      You need to remove the engine. The bolt that holds the vanos sprocket is also the hydraulic valve (central valve)

      Morning Ben, thank you for replying so quick! I've only just come across you're channel and I'm looking forward to watching you're content. I was a technician/master tech in the truck dealers for many years here in West yorkshire but work for the local bus company now. • @allmech_BMW_fault_finding
      @allmech_BMW_fault_finding  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @paulcoultous5098 I noticed that too. I think its to warm up the cats as fast as possible in my opinion and get the car into closed loop quicker. Plus on earlier N20 engines with lower cold start idle they were lumpy until the piezo injectors had got into their stride.

    I dont know if you're able to help but my x1 b48 is showing an engine light. I'm not that familiar with bmws at all, more of a vw man.
    When scanned its showing an intermittent 130f11 fault, exhaust camshaft sensor, signal not plausible. The car starts fine and appears to run smooth but it will go into limp mode. I cleared the fault and swapped the camshaft sensors around hoping id then get an intake cam fault but the exhaust one came up again, so I'd image both sensors are good.
    Last week the wife brought it to the mechanic to be serviced, id usually do it myself only I was in hospital. The lads I use are vw specialists and the admitted to not being familiar with these engines but they rang a guy in bmw and told them its probably the timing chain or cam wheel. Anyway, Im not convinced it needs a chain, the engine only has 115k kms on it and does not make any typical chain rattles. Would you have any suggestions? Thanks

      B48 B38 VANOS FAILURE! CHANGE YOURS IMMEDIATELY IF YOU HAVE THESE FAULT CODES.
      th-cam.com/video/M0DD1gaZq6k/w-d-xo.html
      Let me know how you get on. Injectors are not easy. You need alot of special tools to get em out and back together. These are to be removed to get off the cam cover 🤦 Bad design.

    Hi thanks for this video. I'm considering buying either a pre-facelift G20 320i or a pre-facelift G30 520i, both of which of course come equipped with the B48 engine. In your professional opinion, what are the common problems with this engine? Is there any work/repair in particular that I should ensure has been done before buying one? Would appreciate any advice. Many thanks.

      I just made a short a few days ago go check it out as it shows how you can check the breather you know in case you go test driving. Please subscribe and press notify as I will be doing a cam cover change on that very car next week which should improve the sucking issue.
      Other faults:-
      Injectors leaking into cylinders
      Early engines 2015/16/17 avoid as some had piston slap, again I can probably make a short about that too.
      Luckily you are not buying a hybrid 😅 Most engine problems seem to occur with the 530e as opposed to 520 or 320.
      Would I have one? Hell yeah. B48 is a brilliant engine. Just make sure to take time to find a mint one and with full history pref with oil changes every 15-20k.
      Change oil regularly too
      Just check exhaust tip has no black oily deposits, that you start car from STONE COLD to check if exhaust has fuel smell.
      Make sure no little end light knock from cold etc.
      Best of luck buddy

      @@allmech_BMW_fault_finding Hello Sir! I would like to purchase a 2017 330i with 40.000km. Should I worrry about piston slap? What month should be the production in order to avoid the piston slap? Also, what preventive maintenance I can do?

    • @allmech_BMW_fault_finding
      @allmech_BMW_fault_finding  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi there and thanks for subscribing it really helps me. Tbh 2016 seemed THE year for piston slap. The best year is 2018 just to be sure and higher mileage cars with no oil consumption issues are better as you know the engine is good. In hybrid use petrol engine from cold until warmed up then electric and change oil every 9000 miles with good filter and premium oil.
      Adding RVS is great but it cost 400 euros for a small bottle though it does help with engine longevity.

      @@barriesmith6028 Hi pal. You need to see underneath if the slave cylinder moves or not. If you have a good pedal one would assume that the hydraulics are okay and the clutch disc is faulty.
