      In Sweden about 80 % of BMW sold are bought by companies! They lease the cars for 3-4 years and the employees drive maximum 100-120,000 km with the cars... Do they have any problems? No, what so ever.
      The reliability and the costs are a problem for the next owner/owners.
      Then the costs of the unreasonable pricey spare parts fall in the pockets of those who are "forced" to have insurances. I think the insurance companies keep the carmakers afloat, at the end!!!
      The car industry is an enormous waste of natural resources, without that anyone is blaming!
      Maybe it's, at least, a step forward when we talk about reliability!?

    When i think of reliability i think of cars past 120k miles. Thats the bottom line i think every car should be able to go without any issues. If a car doesnt need major repairs from 120k to 300k miles, i consider that solid and reliable engine. I find it pointless when people brag about their cars being reliable and have less than 120k miles. I would hope you havent had problems! Thats practically new to me still! Just my opinion.

      Facts. I owned a 2016 Malibu Limited LTZ for a little less than 3 years. Drove it from 60k miles to 160k miles and needed no major repairs. Got into an accident and my insurance deemed it totaled. They gave me $12k for it. I bought it for just under $11k. Have also owned a 2001 330i and currently a 2010 328i. My 330i was at 230k miles, when I sold it. I wish I didn't. Didn't do any major repairs on it, per se. It had a vacuum leak and I just replaced the entire CCV system just because everything was like $50. My 328i is at 210k miles. I drive it daily, unlike I did fro my 330i. Biggest repair I had to do was replace the ECU and engine harnesses. They got water damaged. Besides that, nothing major. Engine has been very solid. M54 and N52 treated me very well.

      Agreed. Just about every german manufacturer uses plastic in their engine compartments. It’s to keep cost down so they can sell at a lower price point. If one manufacturer, say Audi, we’re to use all aluminum parts in their engine, their reliability would go up yes, but their car would be 3k more than the competitors, losing market. Since all of them use plastic, they’re all prone to failure. Solution: notice which parts are prone to failure and buy OEM+ aluminum parts👍

      Exactly, you want a boring and mundane car that has an awful transmission and drivetrain or do you want a car that has been tuned and engineered to inspire a driver? I know what I like and I couldn't care less if somebodies Corolla made it to 300K miles. I've seen plenty of BMWs over 200K miles.

      @@briank3754 I used to LOVE BMWs, my favourite manufacturer. But they went from good cars to just a good profitmaking company. A car doesn't have to be boring to be fast and exciting AND reliable. And those 200k Beamers tend to be new ones that had many expensive repair bills. My last one died at just 83k, meticulously looked after by a main dealer. Overtuning is a way of having a cheap, unsuitable engine have more performance squeezed out, then sold at a higher price. I think the best all round - quality and performance in this price bracket is prob Lexus. Expect the upwardly mobile Japanese/Koreans to follow, inc some Mazdas. Originally Lexus were BMW/Merc ripoffs. Now they have their own style and qualities. I want to believe in BMW but I think they are p1sstaking their customers.

Almost all new vehicles are using more plastics for fuel economy (and cost cutting in production), so no fault of BMW applying EPA standards. Thanks for being the messenger on automobile reliability.
    The public is grossly ignorant about automobiles in part because they are wealthy enough to not have to be knowledgeable. If you own an aging BMW out of warranty, better have an uncle or brother who is a BMW tech or there goes little Johnny's college fund.
    One thing you stated in your video which resonates with me an automotive engineer is...the more complex the vehicle aka higher end BMW's with greater engine and driveline complexity, the more failures you will have. In engineering parlance this is called reliability cost. A radio knob will always be more reliable than a Rolex mechanical movement which is highly engineered. Probability of failure is proportional to number of moving parts.
    Keep up the good work.

    I own a used BMW which l bought with 28 k miles and to maintain it is crazy expensive. Therefore l bought a brand new Toyota Rav 4 hybrid and l love it so far …. I added extra 5 year warranty so for 8 years l will enjoy the peace of mind

      Toyota hybrid is an excellent commute car over 40 mpg and l owned German cars Mercedes s class and BMW 5 series again you buy a car for a purpose . BMW is plastic water pump plastic , valve cover gasket plastic … it looks like plastic everywhere . Just replaced a valve cover gasket $$2000 with only 80 k miles you don’t have to do that in Toyota . I have family to feed not community to impress

      I own a 2019 740xi, which is the first generation B58. Extremely reliable and great power when needed. Yours would be the 2nd or 3rd generation of the B58, which improved the timing belt to a single (vs two separate ones on my version), they also increased the direct injection pressure significantly to save on emissions and fuel economy.

    Does anyone recommend the original 0w-20 for the 2020 x3? Since it’s a 4 cylinder turbo, I wanted the oil to burn off less so switched over too Castrol A3/B4 5w-30. The car seems to like it better. What is anyone thoughts?

    • @sebasromero2505
      @sebasromero2505 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use 5w-30 on a 2,4 honda accord the original was 0w-20. The cold temperature where I live doesn’t matter because is warm all year around. If you see that is good keep with it. The use of the car make parts be a bit lose, so with a less liquid oil is less likely to enter in those places. But don’t try anything above 5w-30 for a 0w-20.
      Maybe I wrong but that’s what I think.

    As the owner of a (still mint condition) 1991 Honda Civic Si, I take this not so much as evidence of BMW's improvement, but more as a testament to how far modern Honda has fallen. I tried to like the new ones, even going to the dealership to check out the new products. I was horrified at all the cost-cutting designs I found. To sound like an old fart, yeah, they don't make 'em like they used to.
    Thanks for always having such a great channel, Mark! Cheers! =)

      Well all i am going to say is that i have owned 5 Honda's shortly getting my sixth. Not one has let me down, a few minor issues but reliable and cheap to run. My current car FK8 has 49000 on the clock, set of wiper blades, two tyres and rear pads has been the total cost. So no you don't have to go back to 1991 for reliability.

    I can vouch for the 4cyl b48 performance. I wanted to buy a m240i last year but my BMW dealership could only allocate a 230i for me. I’ve owned a 230i for a little over 6 months and I’ve smoked 370Z, Challanger RT Hemi, Trans Am WS6, STI and V6 Camaros. The B48 is a stout 4 banger that will easily outperform much larger engines. BMW claims 250hp but I suspect 260 at the wheels 280 at the crank and torque has to be over 300 lb because it launches like nobody’s business.

    I bought a brand new 2009 335i back in the day. And it was hot trash. You haven’t seen that model on the road for years now. I traded it in 4 years and 40k miles and I had to bring it in to BMW 4 times for major repairs. The last one I had to tow it to BMW because the “fuel injectors” were faulty. Never ever ever again. I will only lease a BMW.

    I am thinking to get the 2024 x3 m40i which has the b58 I believe, do u guys think it’s a wise decision to have that in terms of reliability. I heard good stuff on that engine, I obviously can’t buy a car and then switch to another after few years so I am planning to keep it at least for 10 years or so. I am interested in German cars not on Toyota or Lexus or any other brands. Any suggestions would be appreciated

    Consumer Reports have shown recently that overall, BMW ranks #1 out of 35 auto manufacturers selling vehicles in the US. This is not strictly for reliability, but in order to reach this level, its reliability must be average or better. Also remember that Toyota worked with BMW on the B58 that is used in the GR Supra. This car has been very reliable after 4+ years of production.

    "temperature swings are the enemies of plastics": yeah, and in the old days, they would just make stuff out of metal, and the problem wouldn't exist in the first place. lol

    • @ECPP
      @ECPP  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Haha, true, I hear that

    • @starboard9551
      @starboard9551 ปีที่แล้ว

      True, though the main reason for using plastic nowadays is primarily for weight savings and for BMWs in particular it's for helping to balance out the car so that the front end and the rear end weigh close to the same amount. Plastic is also a better insulator than metal so as long as it doesn't get overheated it actually helps keep the engine warmer when the car's off, which means it's actually the main thing that prevents the rapid temperature swings.

    • @nycupperes
      @nycupperes ปีที่แล้ว

      I had read that the new B engines hold in heat much longer in the closed deck design, to avoid any sudden temperature changes. If I drive my 740xi in the morning, and go for lunch, the temp gage is not cold.
