  • On my last day here I got lucky to get a ride on the first Baby Bullet to SF in the late afternoon. The weather was perfect and we have a fast ride to San Francisco. We pass many trains enroute. Narrated and all stations, interlockings, and passing trains with their engine numbers are identified. This RFW was the last one I did and in my opinion was the best of all, not that the others were bad. It was a very gratifying transcontinental trip out to the Bay Area to see this fascinating commuter operation with classic EMD power and getting so many cab rides knowing full well that this will come to an unfortunate end fairly soon. Absolutely no regrets making this journey. It was tiring at times with the jet lag but the excitement of this operation gave me the energy to enjoy it at the fullest!!!

The lake in Brisbane I’ve heard to referred to as Brisbane Lagoon, was originally part of the Bay until US101 was built and the railroad relocated the line to swing under the freeway, thus eliminating Tunnel #5.
Tunnels #3 and 4 collapsed during the 1906 earth quake, pushing back the opening of the Bayshore Cutoff back an extra year to 1907.
At 49:46 was my old neighborhood to the left, a hill known as Bernal Heights, I used to hear the SP switching from my house, I’d grab my gear and go shoot the switching operations that were still left in the 90’s.

Assume you know many of the interlocking names are those of nearby major cross streets- Bowers Ave, Lawrence Expressway, Mary. Etc.

I figured they were either named after streets or individuals or railroad officials. My #507 does go into more detail as to how many of those interlockings get their names

Did you find that parking was a problem at your start point or did you not have a car out there? I was thinking of doing a California Railfan Safari this summer and was thinking of riding this into SF to go look at the PCC's and avoid parking in the city. I would do the same coming into NYC from NJ!

I traveled everywhere by train except for that 3000 mile airplane ride

What is maximum track speed? Appears to be at least 80. Why do you dislike the new MUs? Any idea what equipment will be used under live catenary?

79mph. I’m a senior citizen, traditional Railfan, who has trouble digesting certain new technology when reliable technology is being replaced. I’m big on aesthetics.
