Ride on Acela Express

- We capture most of the ride between New York and Boston on Acela Express train #2150 other than a few sections where the train was traveling slow so we eliminated some of that but not too much. We get good speed and the journey saw little or no snow on the west end of the ride, but by the time we got to Rhode Island, the scene turned into a winter wonderland. All trains seen are identified as well as the stations and interlockings. You can clearly hear the Acelas’ hybrid K5LA blowing for workers and railroad crossings. Narrated with info graphics.
This is the first video of yours I've watched, and I enjoyed it immensely. Thank you!
With a last name like that, I’ll bet you did.
I grew up in Northern NJ, and I live in southern NH now. I always love taking the Acela; it’s the best way to go.
Excellent video Timmy. I noticed that once it got past New Haven, it hauled ass. Apparently, Metro-North is Acela's kryptonite.
I don’t care for the metro north part of the ride.
The metro north section is so slow, I forget it’s even part of the NEC…
It's all ConnDOT's fault.
Your mention of the original Route 128 station brought back lots of memories. Grew up in a Boston suburb in the 1950s and was at that station many times meeting aunts from NY and also my father returning on a business trip. The station did look like a little depot,. You would exit from Route 128 about 1/2 mile north of the tracks and the station was in the middle of absolutely nothing, just undeveloped fields. The platforms were ground level and you simply walked across them to meet the northbound passengers. The amount of development is amazing.
Tim, pretty soon Metro-North Railroad will be sending some New Haven Line trains into Penn Station, I have a gut feeling those trains will be packed, and if you think your ride on Amtrak is this slow wait until Metro-North starts Penn Station Access when that comes to fruition!!!
Nice! I can’t believe you went all the way to Boston and then back to New York in just one day though! Going into Boston is something that most people would do for like a 2 to 3 day trip.
I’ve done that many times. If you saw the price for staying in a hotel in Boston, you would understand why I take day trips.
I'm from New Jersey and my Ex boyfriend was from Boston and I remember taking the Amtrak Acela Express almost every weekend when visiting him staying up in Boston for the weekend those were great dating memories that I had a long time ago..
It is scary when people refer to the years after 2000 as "a long time ago".....""life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans"" please cherish every moment....I try to remember that myself everyday!
Wow, I didn't realize soms Acelas didn't stop at New Haven Union! Thanks for the ride, Tim.
Great video. Thanks for the graphics. Have ridden PVD-NYC many times. You took me PVD-BOS for the first time. 😉
Great video. Thank you for sharing it. I have taken the Acela many times over the years - Boston to Washington DC and return. On occasion I also took trips from Boston to NYC and return. Amtrak Regional and Acela great way to travel in the Northeast Corridor - forget flying and driving. I'm originally from Beverly, Massachusetts. I worked on Capitol Hill in Washington DC ( now retired ) for many years.
From my job (see around 9:44) I can hear the constant horn blowing of the Amtrak trains when you mention going through the Bronx. They are starting to do prep work to build stations for the Metro North Railroad so there are crews and equipment on and near the tracks almost very day. The future site of the (new) Morris Park Metro North Station can be seen around 9:52. At 9:20 you can see the OLD long-defunct Morris Park Station from almost 100 years ago. At around 10:49 is the future site of the Co-Op City (Pelham Bay) railroad station.
Great video, retired from Amtrak a couple of years ago and I appreciate you letting everyone see how friendly and convenient Acela is for the community.
Interesting ride on Acela. I've ridden as far as Bridgeport on Metro North trains. Lots of action on this line!! Thanks Tim.💚👌
Wow! In 1998-1999, I was teaching at MIT during the week and coming home to New York on weekends. So, rather than drive or fly, I took Acela. I remember many scenes here. Thank you for screening!
Hi Tim, I always enjoy your videos, especially the ones in Southeastern Pennsylvania and Southern New Jersey area. The Next you venture out the Warminster Line. I hope I'm at the station to meet you and tell you in person how much I enjoy watch your videos. I know I could tell you some of my memories from growing up near Holmesburg Junction. Keep Up the Good work on those videos and be well.
Thanks so much
I remember going through CP216 and told the owner of my company we were getting on the NY subdivision and he had no idea. Win for me.
Live in Texas now, but this train takes me thru home territory. Go thru my home town of Norwalk, Ct and into Boston where I went to grad school and later lived for several years. Our guide by the way is from Long Island - where I also lived- and does some great trips on Boston T.
I rode the Senator and the Colonial 60 yrs ago. Two great trains . I sure miss them. Great diners and good meals on those trains.
Really enjoyable to watch this. Rode the Acela once in 2002 from Newark to Washington and it was such a great trip, especially through Racetrack, between Princeton Jct and Trenton. Even got a peek in the cab of the power car at Union Station.
This was on my birthday! Love your videos just found them thanks for this
miss home (the big apple) and that beautiful eastern seaboard... great vid my friend and keep em comin!!!
Can't wait for the Acela replacements to enter service this year. I've ridden the Acela from NYC to Providence so many times, as well as the regional, and it's always my favorite route. So much fun going by the Connecticut beaches right up close.
Love the opening scenes of Readville. I live there and often sit and watch on sunny days.
Your weekend weather forecast went a bit awry. Sunday saw a heavy if brief snowstorm. I was on an Amtrak shuttle to Springfield when it hit. Very heavy in Connecticut but in Springfield mostly slushy due to higher temps. Great video as usual.
At the time the forecast didn’t sound so dour
Excellent video, many familiar locations in CT. Once made the trip from New Haven to Boston for a Red Sox game......... only to have the game rained out! Safe travels.
What a waste 😫😫😫
I ❤ South Station. My buddy and I, we used to hang out at the end of track 9 and watch Tower One interlocking while eating some lunch and gabbing. He was an Amtrak dispatcher so knew his stuff.
A shave and a haircut at Rowayton. Awesome!
Slow zones on the mbta orange line drive me nuts. It must've be even worse with an expensive Acela ticket. happy rails and thx for this vid.
Actually I got a relatively inexpensive ticket. I booked early.
Great video, I'm also from Li and my sister goes to tufts, near boston. She usually flies when going back/forth but maybe one day she can try the acela😅
It’s a lot more relaxing
I hear you mention Garfield trains, what the heck are they...?? I could probably Google it, but I rather hear your dissertation of it. That's my daily entertainment...😂😂
It’s my own nickname for them, because to look at the front of the locomotives with those large windows and the bulging midsection they remind me of Garfield the Cat. The nickname has caught on with rail fans in the Boston area.
@@3985uprr That's Funny...Also long that ride, you mention Davisville interlocking. Bought back memories where my ship use to tie up at the end of railhead. RoRo ships, a lot of foreign imports, mostly Audi's....
That was a nice video. Thank You.
at hour 2:02:41 this train passed Railside Lives railcam, aside that hope you had a wonderful ride to Boston.
Didn’t know they had one in New London
Connecticut here I train into Springfield mass or nyc with ease. Trains are awesome
An aunt, uncle and cousins lived in Allendale NJ when we were kids. We'd visit on occasion. The two older cousins and I would ride the trains in the early and mid 70's.
My recollection was that they ran quite a bit faster.
Fun Fact: in Connecticut the Thames River is not pronounced "Tems", but THAYMES. First thing they told me when I worked there back in the 80's. Great video.
Yeah, I seem to remember it was pronounced differently. Thanks
1:03:01 really shows the need for additional platforms at Bridgeport when they need to line an eastbound on track 3..
Watching your video when you said something about a viaduct reminded me of this built-up land section in New Jersey. Massive built-up land I drove through a tunnel on Rt. 206 that seemed like man-made. IDK for sure if the land was entirely built up by man, but when following the obvious change in the land to the West (on Google Maps Satellite), we come to the Paulinskill Viaduct, once the largest concrete reinforced structure in the world.
Maybe someday the line will be restored with new tracks and restoration, rather than a Rails-to-Trails conversion.
Thanks for the great and informative video!
Boy, that NY-New Haven section sure is dreadful..."High Speed" Rail, indeed. Building a true separated high-speed line through there should be absolutely top of Amtrak/Congress' priorities
Westport is still considered Saugatuck by many. It's my hometown. I grew up there.
Amazing video, in 2020 Rhode Island’s official name was actually change to just The State of Rhode Island.
Didn’t know that, but I knew about the old name
02:06:07 the current proposed plan is to extend shore line east from new london to westerly, which would bring back groton station, and add another station in stonington. mbta could also easily extend to kingston. that would shorten the gap quite a bit!
One of these days I’d love to ride the Acela. The price tag on it though may not allow me to ride the original ones however.
Very nice video! Love the horn! We don't have 'em like that in little Denmark. But the Acela is a tad slow, isn't it? But then I've just been on a S Korean KTX-1 at 190 mph... But their lines are kinda straight...
Having fun following you on Maps!
FYI: "ALL Aboard Amtrak"..closing song performed by Richie Havens....may he RIP...my dearest cousin..! We love you cuzzo❤..never forgotten...!
I remember riding on the original Turboliner NYC-Boston in the 1970s. It was a bust, could only go as fast as standard trains because the rails couldn't handle high speeds.
You should try a via rail train trip from Toronto to Ottawa Ontario Canada
I love that ride coming from the city going to Syracuse
Wouldn’t life be so much more pleasant if everyone did their jobs like the train attendant in Penn Station?
20:02 Ha, you just passed my house ;)
You live on a CT train? 😅
@@PeterKKrausI live at 20:02
What are the odds of this… I’m born on St. Patrick’s day at 3:17 on a Tuesday morning. Your video is 3:17:43 and your wearing a Boston Celtics hat and green….🍀 WICKID COOL 🍀
Wasn’t a Celtics hat but it was an Irish shamrock hat I got at an Irish gift shop. Interesting coincidence
The last time I took the train from New Haven to Providence it was the Penn Central. That kind of dates me.
Some of that high speed footage in Rhode Island reminds me of silent era movies...kinda just blurring by
If they run westbound trains on tracks 3, 1, and 2 in the morning, is that the main reason trains are always so delayed in metro north territory? And do you think they could get away with only 2 track bi directional service like they do south of Penn Station?
Too many trains on MN west of Stamford.
I go fo the BIG Y train show every year myself
In the USA, there is unfortunately no continuous hight-speed rail line where the Acela trains can continuously travel at 170 or 190 mpH! Thank God we do not have this problem in Europe ( France,Italy, Spain and Germany)!
Once the avelias enter service will you make a video about them?
I hope I live long enough
@@3985uprralso one old acela powercar most go to the railroad museum of Pennsylvania once they're finally withdrawn from service
Rode this many times but not Acela. Mostly NH to GCT but also NH to Penn Station when going south of NYC. Line needs much work to get it up to speed, replacing the old bridges, tracks and interlocks. Sort of a shame to see the cars on the highway blitzing the train. Supposed big project to fix this. They want to shear 15 minutes off the time from NH to NYC. You like to sit on the side of the train I do, then you see both views coming and going. Also need to fix Hartford to Springfield line which is in sad shape.
The sections north of NYC (Metro North) is absolutely AWFUL!! I took the Acela to Boston from Philly and i couldn't believe how slow we were rolling. Are they working on the tracks?
They always seem to be
Amtrak was actually thinking of bring the northeast corridor to long Island the queens village section
I did like your ride to Boston on the Acela but is it possible to do a RFW on an M8 to get a better cab ride video?
The view isn’t acceptable to me. I like to get the best cab rides possible.
awesome do you know how fast the train went
Close to 150 in spots.
@@3985uprr thank you
When I'm traveling on a train I tend to go hangout in the cafe car and engage with others
If I did that, there would be no video. By being independent, I can accomplish a lot more than I could if I wasn’t.
Well aren’t you something.
@@3985uprrIf I were sitting next to you. We would have a 3 hour conversation about trains.
The train is moving so fast in Rhode Island, you can't see anything.
UniIf this is a 3 track line why isn't the Amtrak line an express line? It should be separate from the Metro lines.
What does CP mean?
I Amtrak gets the shaft on that section
I feel bad for you with the mph.
Just like your maiden LIRR Cannonball trip.
The New Haven Boston portion, kind of eased the pain. Overall, I thought it was a great ride.
Does anyone know why the train keeps going slow in this video and I grew up near station 128 and the back bay station
Yeah, he got up to triple digit speeds between those stations.
Always loved my time spent on the infamous DECELA!!! always breaking down.......piece of S
Aren’t you cheerful!
As far as I'm concerned, this portion of the line is too slow to pay the extra premium for Acela service. Amtrak should acquire the portion of the Metro-North line that it runs on, and upgrade the line to the same standard as that south of Newark.
That’s what I would always hope for. New Haven to Boston is definitely worth the premium fare if you’re getting on there
No stop at New Haven?
One of the few Acelas that don't stop there.
Kind of pathetic, IMHO-we get excited about 150 MPH for 10 whole miles! In France you can go 180+ most of the way across the whole country! I guess we have to start somewhere...
Some train availability is way better than no train availability.
What % of viewers have let in run all the way through?
Enjoyed the video. But sad to say, the American railway still can’t touch European systems. We go through to many cities and towns to hit top speeds for a good length of time as they do. As yes, Ruggles, beyond torture.
Awesome vid, but one mistake: why did you sit to the left? The rule on Acela (and the NE Regional) is, north sit right, south sit left. Best views that way.
Imagine 140MPH in a blinding snowstorm. I love Acela!
It’s my preference.
@@3985uprr Eh. Less viewership for that.
3:10:17 same man, Struggles station
Everyone spells it "Amtrak", but it is actually spelled "AMTRAK."
1:05:49 That's where I live.
Stratford
Grab an ale ..thx man
Boston baked beans.
I had some along with chowder when I got there
please put camera on the front or the back of train.window shots no good.just saying.
With 50,000 views, this video seems very popular. It’s impossible to please everyone.
There's no back window on an Acela. It has a locomotive on both ends.
