I got one new when I left school and started an apprenticeship at 16 back in 2001 in the lion head colours. It was a UK restricted bike and it was the slowest thing on the road. It was restricted by bypassing the expansion chamber with an internal pipe. The thing wouldn't rev over 5,000 rmp and tapped out at about 24mph. I kept on begging my dad to let me de restrict it but he was having none of it because of the legality of it. That was of course untill he borrowed it one day to go to work on. He got and said he realised how bad it was and how dangerously slow it was.. We derestricted it that weekend and the little thing lit my hair on fire! Finally I felt like king of the road! Ah the nostalgia 😍
Thats an awesome story. Love seeing stuff like this pop up in the comments. Thanks for watching and thanks for taking the time to type that out. What a good memory to have.
My dad got me one new in 2005 when Aprilia was bankrupt. I've several engines built for it, one full Metrakit pro race which was somewhere near 20hp at 15k rpm. I loved that thing and had it for over 8 years. Few years ago got a RS125 to fully restore, got a 140cc built for that but it wasn't quick enough and I upgraded to an RSV1000R, the dream bike when I was 16years old.
This is a nice bike! I got the opportunity to ride one of these at a moped event here in the US owned by my friend Peter. He had it outfitted with a 60cc jug and performance pipe. What a riot!
As you questioned, it doesn't have an ECU (thankfully). It has a CDI/coil built into one unit. Unlike the later models the CDI isn't part of the restriction, it's all in the exhaust. The switch is for switchable CDI timing maps on what I assume is a Malossi CDI. These things are super easy to play about with.
I had one of these...1999 model. Put a big bore kit on it to 70cc, upgraded the carb from 12mm to 21 with larger jetting, air filter and a gianelli race pipe. She finished up topping just over 85mph with really quick acceleration. Sadly the little am6 power plant did not live very long probably due to the tolerances being wacked way of the grid, but 17 yr olds will be 17yr olds.
I have tried several 50cc sport's bikes, all with either an AM6 or a Derbi engine, but the Aprilia I tried, even if it was the slowest, it felt like an actual legit race bike It was the 2018 version, that bike is quite fast for being all stock doing the same top speed as in the video
The bike you tried, from 2018, has the exact same main chassis as the One in this video. The main differenze between them are the engine, from Am6 to derbi, front forks, rear swing arm and seat chassis. And if this wasn't weird enough, Aprilia used this aluminium chassis also for their RS4 125 4stroke bike AND the RS4 250 Cup! I do have the same bike in the video plus the '06-'11 version. This very chassis Is top notch, even if It has a big angle on the steering compared to other bikes. Fantastic in everything
What an amazing bike. It would be the perfect bike to learn to race. You need to carry corner speed. Just like the Moto 3 bikes that lap Valencia in 1:37 while the Moto GP bikes lap in 1:29. 4 times the engine size and hp and only 9% faster, quite amazing really.
Got some questions in how to best choose one! - what about the Derbi GPR 50 in comparison to the Aprilia rs 50?... - is it the same engine in those two? what about the frame and the plastic of them? - which is of a higher quality and more comfortable to ride them? thanks to anyone who can reply to me as I found one of each and like to buy one of them, but know too little to directly tell which one is better, Derbi is from 2009 and the Aprilia is from 2018, but Derbi is renovated 2018 as well... -how to best choose between these two models and brands for a 50 cc sportbike model? thanks to anyone who has ridden both and can explain some differences to think of for me as a beginner in this world so I can make a more informed or educated choice ...
I don't know it's exact value - the current owner imported this from Japan and I've never really seen any for sale in. NZ. I'd guess maybe $5k NZD for one in really nice condition but wouldn't be surprised if it's more. Or less? I honestly don't know. But they are cool bikes! Shame we didn't get more of these things in NZ and Oz. Cheers for watching mate!
@@jakespeed6515 agreed they had the chance to upstage the CT125 and now it’s just a lower powered ‘trail’ bike. Hopefully I can check it out in person early next year.
Obviously, that bike has a big bore kit. The Malossi 80cc would be the wise purchase for that bike. Malossi is a trusted brand, instead of some trash off eBay. Anyway's the neighbours would learn to hate you. Fun video, thanks.

Thats awesome. Small bikes when you're older just hit differently. So much fun. Can't beat an RSV1000 for smiles though!
RSV1000R is the perfect bike for a 16 year old

Thanks for watching. Good things take time! Keep at it.
Fantastic little machiine, perfectly formed. Beautiful
It's really well thought out!
That bike sounds amazing!
I would have begged, stolen and borrowed to ride something like that @ 16yrs old 👌

Did you forget to gap the new piston rings. I made that mistake once on me moped fitting a big bore kit.
love my one, had 70 kit and 21mm carb , good for round 130 135
That’s amazing! I can imagine it too. This thing was mostly stock and still went much better than expected.

Glorious RPM's!!!
How many RPM's would you like sir? All of them? Ok.
I always wanted one when I was 16 but couldn’t afford it but last year I bought one and now I’m 32 😊but it’s a hoot to drive
Small bikes are even more fun when you're an adult. Nice buy!
Here too

It really would. It'd teach you to keep the RPM's high and make the most of skills as opposed to power.
This was the bike i wanted the most when i was 16!!!
It’s such a nice machine! Would have been cool to ride to school on one.

Wish I could answer the questions my friend. Not so sure about the Derbi as I've not ridden one myself.
Keep an eye on the temperature
Cool bike the aprilia, I was a big fan of the Suzuki rg50t and took one for a test ride. I believe they could also do 100 km/ph plus.
Suzuki RG50's are awesome. I filmed one a while ago.
Viva Aprilia 🎉🎉❤❤
Great bike!
Beautiful 👌 definitely a little rippa
Just wondering if you'll be doing a review on the "new" Honda CB125F
I'll see if I can get my hands on one. They are in NZ but I haven't actively looked for one to try yet.

My stock 50cc with 19mm CP Carb got 68mph!!
Sounds like race car engine in 1980's video games
