So this show is now getting pretty deep into mandalorian history and culture, which might have some of you confused. We covered a lot of this backstory in our Mandalorian recap video, but I’ll also catch you up here and there in the video.
The title of the episode is the Apostate.
    Doug: Yeah what’s that mean?
Wel an apostate is someone who renounces their religion, or is outcast from it. When Din jarin removed his helmet he broke the mandalorian creed, and was outcast from his people.
Doug: But not all mandalorians make you keep your helmet on. Couldn't he have just joined up with them?
Okay, so Bo-Katan mentions this here [you and your kind split off, etc]. Basically, for thousands of years the mandalorians have been warriors, forging beskar armor. And for thousands of years, they have been fighting one another. A thousand years ago, a mandalorian named Tarre Vizsla, who was once a jedi, actually managed to unite all of Mandalore under the rule of his darksaber. That's why it’s still a symbol of mandalorian leadership-which I think will have huge implications on this show in future seasons that I’ll talk about later on.
After vizsla died, the mandalorians went right back to civil war, splitting off into different factions. Eventually they split into 2 different f=groups, death watch and the pacifists and death watch were exiled to the mandalorian moon. So the hyper religious group Din belongs to is a splinter of death watch-you can tell me the patch on their armor when they rescue him.
So let’s talk about this specific group, because the episode starts with one of their religious and cultural rituals.
We begin with the sound of hammering over the star wars logo [clip]. Which has a couple meanings. One, it has a literal meaning, as the Armorer is forging a new helmet for a foundling. But it’s also a metaphor for how they are forging a new member of their clan. The creation of new armor is a deeply personal act for mandalorians [sabine clip].
A mandalorian armor represents your ability to fight, to project your clan, and it’s a symbol of your personal identity. It’s why Din wears a mud horn on his pauldron-it's a symbol of his clan, and the love he holds for Grogu.
And of course the shot of the arrow hammering feels like a callback to another Jon Favreau joint, Iron man. [splitscreens].
A Couple things to noise in this scene. Our own Colton Ogburn also pointed out that for a moment, the way she holds the metal is very reminiscent of the death star. Also, she pours a liquid into the pool of water before using it to cool the metal.
Doug: Yeah, why’s she doing that?
It’s to, uh, oxidize the nitrogen in the water, so it can hydrogenate the metal and make it strong.
Doug: You have no idea, do you?
    I don’t, no.
Notice that the armorer keeps this skull in the chamber. This is a recreation of the skull of a mythosaur, made out of beskar. We’ve heard them mentioned in chapter 1 [ancestors rode mythosaur]. When mandalorians first settled their world, these beats were all over the place, so they had to tame and ride them. It was the first test to show their prowess as warriors, so the skull has become a symbol of their people.

I just want to call more attention to that asteroid starfighter fight. The combat they had Mando used was so cool the way he'd hide behind asteroids and pop out claiming kills. It's so reminiscent of various movies where characters are being hunted one at a time in jungles, tall grass, etc. It's a common trope, but this one was in space during a starfighter battle, and it was so cool.

    2. Then I saw the Armorer forging the 1st helmet for a foundling, which I thought was Din
    3. Then the whole water alligator/lizard/ thing took me by surprise just eating up Mandalorians like it was nothing. But it showed this sect cared for its people through the foundling's, Paz Vizla's and the Armorer's interactions.

One easter egg to add: Kalevala, the planet in this episode is named after finnish folklore and mythology that was published in 19th century as a poem collection. Also Gorian Shard is propably a nod to Iku-Turso, green creature character in those poems. We have also named one day to celebrate Kalevala in Finland, 28th of February which was tuesday this week.

Something you missed - in the old Extended Universe, the Mandalore's Helmet is unique, just like the Darksaber, and the Mandalore never takes it off, because they are a different person than when they were a Mandalorian. Thus, the _Way of the Mandalore_ is to *emulate* the Mandalore's behavior, not the behavior of a regular Mandalorian. If Din did become Mandalore, he would extra be not-able to take off his helmet.
Now, there were multiple "Helmets of the Mandalore," but not at one time. A new one can only be forged if the previous is impossible to locate, because if someone doesn't deserve to have it, then they should be killed, not go through some sort of East-West Schism.
One more thing - the episode title _The Apostate_ could refer to both Din and Grogu since Grogu is an apostate Jedi.

should be noted though that pedro pascal absolutely did compare the treatment of migrant kids on the border to the treatment of jews in death camps by posting a picture of kids in cages next to a picture of jewish kids in death camps with the caption "america 2018" on it. the issue is the picture he posted of the kids in cages was not of migrants in an american immigration facility rather it was of Palestinians put in cages in isreal. in other words he was unintentionally comparing the jews in isreal to the nazis during ww2. now as much as this tweet disturbs me i dont think he should be fired for it however rather than be fired like gina was pedro was applauded for his tweet.

He had to say something to explain her absence. She made problematic comments. They caused problems, ergo, they were problematic. I took his tone to mean “let’s not go any further about it”, not implying anything. Since they didn’t recast or kill off her character, the door is open for her to come back later in a reduced role.

After IG-11's attack Den mentions him going "scud", that's a reference to the titular character from the comic "Scud the Disposable Assassin" about a wacky malfunctioning robot assassin who vaguely resembles an IG droid.
