Still completely baffling to me that the Darksaber, arguably this season's main focus, was handed over to Bo due to a TECHNICALITY, which was only addressed several episodes later, when it became convenient for the plot.

      I totally agree, strange decision

    • @cheogt4623
      @cheogt4623 ปีที่แล้ว +16

A technicality could be something like this: "who has the darksaber will rule Mandalore", it sounds cool but is actually very stupid and lazy writing, so getting rid of it was necessary, well done.

    • @wookiesin3000
      @wookiesin3000 ปีที่แล้ว +26

By this technicality, then Rey should have the Dark Saber (if it wasn't destroyed). Palp defeated Maul. Luke was the only one to walk away from the DSII scuffle between himself, Vader, and Palp. Kylo defeated Luke. Rey beats Kylo.

Should have kept BOBF Boba centered and made S3 with the main plot around Mando's quest for atonement and him missing Grogu, while a subplot focusing on Grogu's training with Luke, trauma surrounding Order 66 and him choosing to return. Make the reunion as a season final pay-off. And then, made S4 about recapturing Mandalore, with its politics as a subplot, instead of an episode's main plot.

I think Andor really opened people’s eyes to what a Star Wars show can be when it really tries to be something more, so the fact that Mandalorian is still clinging to it’s comfort zone is just no longer as impressive as it used to be.

@@thegoldman25 I agree that not every show needs to be like Andor but in some aspects it really must be. Just in a general sense. Andor had great acting, writing, and pacing what, tbh is something I expect from every show. Mando season 3 had some great visual FX but at the same time the Imperial base in the last 2 episodes for me felt super plastic and fake. Also Andor is more realistic then any star wars content we ever seen what definitely shouldnt be the standard for Star Wars. But sometimes if feel that a realistic moment or a good/real conversation can really help in Mando. Most conversations and interactions have become super surface level and really doesnt work.

I think you honestly just didn't get it. You have to be invested in the larger entire world of star wars and all its characters to find this season interesting. You have to understand the big picture of the gaps it's filling in, in the overall timeline of the starters universe and the political history going on.
It requires fans to actually have watched all the other films too.

@Nexus_Edge I found it compelling. I loved it personally. For me, it was emotional watching Din risk his life to travel to mandelor to rejoin his tribe.
I also found it emotionally compelling to see Bo Katan meet with Dins tribe and begin to clear her own name as a former ruler. She wasn't as bad as the rumors made her out to be.
I do think it was a little to much Bo Katan in the show, and it would be nice to have more Din.Alot of people seem to be mad it put her in position of leadership of mandelor rather than Din. But she did save his life twice, so I think it was fair for him to give her the sabot. Also retaking mandelor was originally her plan in season 2, not Dins, so they would have to work that out somehow.
Idk I loved it personally. I don't get it.

When I was watching season 3, I kept asking myself “why do I feel a little disappointed? It’s doing what I want. It’s focusing on the mandalorians, all of them.” And I realized it just felt sloppy and very distracted. And why is Greef surprised that not paying pirates who you borrowed money from leads to disaster and the people don’t call him out. Grogu should’ve just been with Luke and we see his progress. My biggest gripe is that for Bo Katan basically being the main character, she doesn't progress from where she was last seen in Mando S2, coming to terms with her not being the one with the right to reunite Mandalore, but instead goes from depressed due to her failures to REGRESSING back to her her characterization in Rebels and Clone Wars where she feels entitled by her blood right to leadership of her people and regains that right due to technicality.
She could have come to terms with the fact that she's really not suited to seizing the Mandalore system, which she's basically just bungled since the middle of the Clone Wars or like 20 years in canon, and leveraged that in an advisory role to Din who really felt like her earned that right even if he didn't necessarily want it.
Instead they opted to ignore her experience and threw the legendary weapon away unceremoniously.

There’s supposed to be a season 4 but I feel like you can end this show here since Gideon is dead, Mandalore is reclaimed and the Mandalorians are united. By FAR my biggest problem with this season was that I did not like Boka Tan. She's stubborn, egotistical and annoying when she's on screen. And the worst part? She never had character growth. Instead of finally accepting that the darksaber doesn't belong to her or something along those lines, perhaps a character arc or something, she just gets her ego fulfilled and is just as boring as she was prior.
I would have rather seen the darksaber lost, broken, stolen, or destroyed prior to her finally obtaining it. It would bring more clarity and relatability to her character, rather than the "oh she beat the thing that jumped me while I was off-guard".
Just imagine her chasing the darksaber after it had fallen off a cliff, or desperately scrambling to repair it - some kind of struggle would have been far more compelling and entertaining.

Why would there have to be some big goodbye seen at the end? In this story alone they visit everyone several times. The second season ended with Mando thinking he wouldn’t see Grogu again while here he just decides to live in a planet away from the Mandalorians. The only goodbye scene needed was for Paz and his kid. He ignores orders for his kid and that should’ve been the case in the end with him doing it mainly for his kid or asking for them to look after his kid.

The problem with the Disney approach of naming properties is that every one is named after a specific character. Had Ep. 4 come out today, it would be called "Luke Skywalker". They should have named it "A New World" or something and allowed it to be different seasons focusing on different characters, and some characters pop in and out from time to time. Then we could negate the criticism "This episode isn't about the Mandalorian. This is filler!"

The plot was all over the place and it felt like we left off things that were supposed to be important such as IG-11, the Mythosaur, and the Darksaber. Instead we were having dinner parties with Jack Black! Din and Grogu also being sidelined for Bo-Katan pissed me off as well because Bo-Katan is supposed to get her own show later, yet it felt like she took the spotlight in season 3 of Mando’s show. Grogu adds the kid element they need to capitalize on the younger audience, and for those moments when you need to throw a character in harms way for the "epic" battle. Sure, they could have made them complete mercenaries but the executives that fund these things like the family connection premise.
Personally I think Star Wars needs to loose all of it's cannon and just use those wonderful set designers and artists and do a story completely not related to cannon at all, how about a whole new galaxy to explore, rather than tediously trying to tie every story together so it all fits.

While I generally agree with you about this season , I strongly disagree that Grogu is not an important component of this season. True, it is not an active role but he has always been (problematically)not a character as much as he is an object of value. But object or being, Din loves Grogu and he is rootless without (more arguably than being a Mandalorian). This season is awful but it is not a season about 5he retaking of Mandalore as much as it is about Din wanting to create a home for safe home for Grogu. Just a quibble, but he needs to be there.

i think the importance of the darksaber arc to mando is that he has essentially been trying to shirk the responsibility of it without having it known that he is doing so. When he duels vizla it is more an answer to a challenge than any desire to keep the blade. Even bo seems shocked at the use of the technicality, but she has always been one to pounce at a chance for influence and power and so accepts the premise. I hope that there becomes an arc where he works on this, but.. who knows

Would love to know what you think if Disney went on to do six episode shorts like Tales of the Jedi with other concepts.
    1. Tales of the Jedi (season 2)
    2. Tales of the Sith
    3. Stories from the Bounty Hunter Guild
    4. Stories from Clone Commanders.
The last one I came up with when we met Mayday in Bad Batch. Plus, Clone Wars fans could get continued Clone stories from ones we haven’t met or casual run into from existing stories.

9:36 Also to note: a rule that was never mentioned in any of the previous appearances. Maul claimed it as a trophy because it was a uniting symbol, not because it was an actual rule. In rebels the Darksaber was given to Bo Katan after it was stolen by Sabine from Maul. No rule then. It was only a rule for that specific scene.

The only way the whole Gideon cloning trash would be justified is if it was all a distraction from Hux's dad's "Project Necromancer" (smt related to reviving Palpatine or making Snoke), making it seem that all the midichlorians went to making Sith-Gideon troopers to the New Republic

  • @Vilnislv13
    @Vilnislv13 ปีที่แล้ว +6

The final two episodes had way too many moments that made absolutely no logic.
    - Gideon doesn`t kill Din Djarin, but escort him with two (!!) troopers.
    - Gideon somehow has a tracking device on both Din Djarin and Grogu. He sees exactly where they are and he couldn`t give a fuck less that they are getting close to his clones, yet appears very angry and shocked, after something that he could have stopped, happens.
    - ...and this is a minor one, I guess, but Moff Gideon destroys Bo Katan`s dark saber, by clinching his fist, yet Bo Katan`s hand, which he was crushing as well, at the same time, is completely ok.

IMO third season is one big mess. I thought after parting with Grogu and being banished from his clan he would have to overcome his reluctance to lead and use previous character development to take responsibility as head of state for Mandalore, that taking back the planet would be hard and it will require building alliances and resolving conflicts (like with Bo-Katan, who wants the sabre). Instead they undone all the progress to sell more merch, and had no idea what to do with titular characters of the show. No wonder Pedro Pascal didn't even bother to come on set most of the time.

In general, I love Star Wars. There are always moments that could be more, in TV or Movies (I never saw the animated shows) but overall, it is a great escape from the craziness of life. The Mandalorian is the 'family' show. Andor is the 'mature' show. Boba is... variety? Haha.
Truthfully, I like them all equally. I am looking forward to Ahsoka, since I never saw Clone Wars and would like to learn more about her. I especially am eager to watch more of Andor. I hope Boba and Obi-Wan get a season 2, as I really enjoyed those shows as well.
With the announcement of Rey having a film in the future, I am just very grateful for all the fun Star Wars content. I am just a TV/Movie goer, but there are books, comics, cartoons, video games etc. Star Wars is one of the best franchises as there really is something for everyone, of any person, out there to enjoy, get into, and relate. My thoughts: The whole technicality of the exchange of the saber between Jarin and Katan was set up visually pretty well in that spider droid episode (I even remember thinking to myself, oh it's hers now). It also hammers home how bs the whole concept is (further hammered home by the actual destruction of the saber), but also how Jarin is aware of and accepting of the others' customs. Honestly reminded me of what Tony Stark told Peter Parker: "If you're nothing without the suit, then you shouldn't have it."
Also I'm pretty sure the stinger at the end of season 2 literally says, "The Mandalorian will return in The Book of Boba Fett."

Imo, this season lacked too much on the emotional side, and relied on too many convenient plots to keep it going. It kind of felt like a big slideshow with only plot bits, no story nor character work. Honestly, I'm baffled how uniterested Favroni are in Din, Din is not just Grogu's sidekick, he is part of what we love about this series. Unlike characters like say, Anakin in Phantom Menace who is only a kid and has hardly much to give to the story, Din's probably in his 40's and has SO much story behind him!!! Why does he love the creed so much? How was he raised?? (the Din we know and love came from their upbringing), did he have a mandalorian father? or maybe he was never formally adopted and hence had some kind of hesitation over formally adopting Grogu? Maybe his mandalorian father died like Bo Katan's and he never got to see his face and thus wanted Grogu to see his before saying goodbye?. Why does he know Tusken language? how is he so good with other cultures???. Din is super interesting but the story has no idea how to write him, not even in the season ABOUT MANDALORE. Even with Din finally adopting Grogu, as much as I loved it, it felt kind of out of nowhere just for the clean slate finale. All the set up from S2? gone or fixed on a whim, and it's not that I dislike fun, I love camp, I would have even been on board with Lizzo and Jack Black but like you said in the video, the story was so boring and numb, and that lack of focus on Din is felt even more cuz the episode could have been a GREAT chance to explore his trauma towards droids, but instead we just see him hating them like in S1? Seriously? no reaction to the DROIDS WHO KILLED HIS PARENTS? he just starts kicking them?. It's so disappointing how little they care about Din as a character.
He redeemed himself by the second episode (and I don't mind if he wants to belong cuz some individuals just have faith as part of their lives) and then played side kick who had to be constantly rescued. Din was the perfect vehicle for the audience to learn more about Mandalore, cuz he knew as little as we did about the other factions, but no, instead we got the same arc for Bo Katan for the third time, and she lost all her personality and what made her intriguing in the process, never acknowledging her past mistakes and failures (like when she admitted she surrendered to Gideon and none of the Mandos were bothered in the slightest, when they obviously weren't told the plans of surrender). Same with the children of the watch being written so incompetent in Jurassic Park for Bo to show leadership skills...all bc she had a ship and they didn't? I guess they took the space bus there? And are u telling me they Never tried to hunt that damn bird? (am I the only one who laughed at how they "ran out of fuel" by pursuing a bird for a few miles but Axe had enough fuel to GET INTO ORBIT AND THEN SCAPE THE FALLING SHIP? KAJHDKJA). Rlly, so baffling writing choices, no wonder people thought the armorer was suspicious! she changed her mind re Bo so randomly! Despite calling her a cautionary tale in book of Boba... It feels like the mythosaur was just a excuse to make the superstitious leader think Bo is a chosen one or smth!, when a conflict between them would have been SO much more interesting...
And idk but Din showing 0 emotions through the season was very annoying too, he only had them with Grogu, but hello? Bo Katan is calling you a religious zealot who sucks and is to blame for the destruction of Mandalore (when it was her fault lmao) and he doesn't care? She also never apologizes for treating them like shit to then be proven wrong by being welcomed with open arms? IT'S SO WEIRD HOW NO ONE IN THE SEASON TALKED NOTHING BUT PLOT (and imo the fact that Din rarely spoke to anyone but Bo shows just how little chemistry they had, sure the dialogue was bad but at least there's banter with Peli or Cara, partnership with Greef or Cobb, etc, with Bo all interactions were contrived and boring except for the out of nowhere speech of "I'll serve you until your song is written (sorry Din but the song was written...many times...and it wasn't a hit)" that is great in a vacuum, but then Din simply leaves the planet once they take it back lol I guess the song was written??. At least with Boba I felt something when Din said they'd go down together, he had nothing to lose anymore after being told he should never see Grogu again so it made sense he was willing to die.
My only theory is that they're stretching out the plot so it fits better the thrawn movie they're setting up, cuz all the set up in S2 was dropped go return us to S1 status. I feel like they'll give Din's arc of leadership for that movie instead (cuz why else show how good he is at making different factions work together? And his understanding of other cultures? It'd be so weird if it leads nowhere, tho at this point I better not expect anything lol).
This season's biggest failure besides the uniterest in Din and Grogu is that it made Mandalore SO uninteresting...we got one more named Mandalorian this season...one. The other named one? gone (and they didn't even fucking mourn him kajshdkja). I've asked my non hardcore-Star-Wars-fan friends and they were SO done, only kept watching for Grogu and Din, and they're so happy the season ended with them both going on adventures again, ready to leave Mandalore behind, and that's just...not good, whoever thinks we will get a Bo Katan show now is being very generous, general audiences won't care about such a show, I assure you ñ_n.
Anyway...sorry for the long rant, this season has lots of good ideas on paper but hardly explored any of it, which is a damn shame.

15:44 I don't necessarily disagree with your criticisms, but can see an issue cropping up from Star Trek as well. There are often filler episodes that are palmed off to us as a slice of life or a focus on a supporting character for one episode. Apparently this adds richness to the whole thing, or you get a bunch of credulous fans who actually love Trouble with Tribbles the most out of ToS, but not me. Once you've watched all of ToS as often as I have, those episodes can be all the harder to sit through, but seemingly it's a part of the whole series format.
Good and bad writers emerge, maybe a DC Fontana has to step in and save a particularly weak script. I agree that these were not issues in the first series, but they start to creep in with series 2 and now in series 3 are in full view. Stuff going on outside the series, such as cancellations generating filler episodes or general writer confusion, editorial mandates or studio interference, viewer feedback, let alone strikes can all come into play and affect any series.
Should we put up with avoidable mediocrity, of course not, but this does seem to crop up often in a TV episodic format, even ones with movie production values, such as with Twin Peaks.

Star Ttek guy is back. I'm not sure what show you Star Wars guys were watching but season 3 was the right way to go with this series and actually extended its life by finishing up the season 2 storyline and reestablishing at the end the lone bounty hunter and kid premise. Did Mando take a back sit in season 3 yes. But you established that the New Republic isn't all that good. You got an inside man handler in Capt Teva that will get Mando and the Kid a new adventure every week.
Remember this is not network TV or syndication you don't have 26 episodes per season to tell a story.

I feel that our expectations are now spoiling the experience. I loved the season, I’m not sure if it’s what people think should happen that make them think that the season was poorly done, but I would argue it’s on par with the previous ones. Whilst I don’t want to go into too much detail, I would say that previous season had a novelty factor but if we were truly to analyse them there was a lot of silliness and supposedly weird episodes, and weird character pivots. The same goes for Clone Wars and Rebels. Having said that, I still love all of these shows and accept them as the overall story that is being told. The only Star Wars product I will never accept are the sequels. There’s not much redemption there which is why I hope the characters and those involved in set design, VFC etc will get another spin in a reset/alternate time but time will tell. I really did try to give them a chance, but to me they’re simply unwatchable. At least the shows have more or less definitive ending so one can just finish at the point they wish to finish and pretend like the rest never happened.
One point on Grogu, I disagree that there was no character development. For one you have to look at him as 3 year old child that operates on instinct and perception. He is becoming more trusting, he’s becoming more assertive in his actions as well. On that note, my question here is, what would be a character development for a 3 year old? I think them treading carefully makes a lot more sense then all of a sudden seeing Grogu having moral and existential crisis.

Din didn't go to Bo-Katan for no reason. She knew where the Living Waters on Mandalore were, he went there to ask her.
This began her character arc, which was then continued when she went to rescue Mando, sees the Mythosaur, becomes a Child of the Watch, shows them she is still a capable leader, and shows the Armorer it's time to reunite the separate Mandalorian clans.
Would you rather The Armorer have stated "We must unite our clans and retake Mandalore" in the first couple episodes? She still believed the planet was cursed & thought of Bo-Katan as nothing more than a cautionary tale.
This is what the season was about: coming together despite their differences and retaking Mandalore, showing that it's not about whether you take your helmet off or wield the Darksaber, it's about whether or not you stick together as a family, despite your differences.

  • @swingmattuk

One point on the darksaber, we have Ezra returning to the galaxy now and the possibility of Huyang’s return, who likely witnessed and guided the creation of the darksaber, there’s the potential for its repair - perhaps if Huyang and Sabine return, the mandalorian Jedi with an ancestral claim on the blade as a member of house visla (clan wren), as she hasn’t made a lightsaber herself, perhaps they’re hiring at the reclaiming of the darksaber from Bo

I'm just gonna say as cool as the darksaber is I much prefer the helm of mandalore being a symbol of leadership rather than a jedi weapon. Yes it was made by a mandalorian jedi, but it just feels wrong. It isn't a weapon based in their culture. Yeah, a lightsaber is cooler than a helmet, but what that helmet means is so cool especially if you have played kotor 2 or read kotor themed comics. It has more cultural significance especially when you consider how the mandalorians in this show put so much emphasis on keeping their helmets on. Idk the darksaber just feels like fan service, and as signature weapon for Djinn I much preferred the beskar spear or his rifle. We don't get to see someone fight with a spear that often, especially in star wars, so having that just made him feel unique, but this is star wars and every main protagonist has to have a lightsaber(yeah i know there shows/movies that dont do this, but it is definitely not the majority).

@@jamiemunn9200 Despite the sarcastic insult. I’ll still take the ‘compliment’ you made at the end. Plus I would essentially agree with you anyway. If you said the third season of this show was the worst one.

About chapter 6, I believe if it wasn’t a filler about a conspiracy but about a real droid revolution it would’ve been at least useful, maybe using the contrast of the droids will of independence with Mando’s backstory, to make him learn something with the episode, to make his character grow…just not to throw an episode in the WC like that

I'm just kinda tired of Star Wars at the moment, and that sucks as a fan. I think Season 3 overall was pretty good, but it had moments that either didn't belong or should have been in its own show. However, I think my biggest problem this season is how it didn't take any risks. The mythosaur? Still asleep. Mandalore? Retaken in 2 episode. Any conflicts between the clans reuniting? Couple scenes of chess and its resolved. Honestly, I can see myself hanging up my hat on this finale if season 4 is canceled or is super bad. I'm disappointed but at the same time satisfied. I want something radically different and hopefully Ahsoka is it.

I read somewhere that Favreau and Filoni both pitched different Mandalorian centred shows and KK suggested they work together and "The Mandalorian" was born. I wonder if they began with the narrower "Lone Wolf and Cub" Mando + Grogu, which was Favreau's and now they're pivoting to the wider Bo Katan, Thrawn and the New Republic story which is more Filoni's. The "Lone Wolf and Cub" is a pretty limited concept especially when the hero rarely shows his face and the sidekick is a puppet that can't talk - so there's no harming in doing that pivot and having another lead who actually shows her face (you might say she replaced having a bunch of one off or recurring characters, like Bill Burr's Migs Mayfeld who come in carry an episode then go), but they really failed to pull off the pivot.

The adventures of Grogu and Din would be cool as a comic book, especially since it would allow the reader to read Grogu's POV
