    The Mandalorian season 3 episode 6, Chapter 22 "Guns for Hure" is a weird one. Now I know this is probably going to be one of the most controversial episodes of the mandalorian. It seems like a pointless side quest, it’s got some distracting cameos, and some very distracting cameos. I’m sure all of you have thoughts we’d love to see down in the comments. For me, I thought it was a lot of fun, and it did a solid job moving forward the season. But first, let’s get into these easter eggs.
    The episode was directed by Bryce Dallas Howard, and it’s kind of sequel to her last episode, which introduced Bo Katan and her mandalorians back in season 2. That episode also featured quarren and mon Calamari, who begin this episode.
    Back to the episode. We open with a ship belonging to the quarren. So the quarren are an aquatic species who share the hopeworld of Mon Cala with the mon calamari-you know, this guy [it’s a trap]. The quarren are always, always the bad guys, and the Mon cala are always shown as the good guys. The mon cala supported the republic in the clone wars, and then the rebellion in the galactic civil war.
    And they’ve always been at odds with the quarren. There’s even a great clone wars arc about the prince Lee-Char becoming king of his people and leading them through the clone wars-all great stuff. Lee-char was in power until well into the rebellion, and in the Star Wars allegiance comics we see that the Mon cala monarchy is still alive and well decades into the future.
    I’m bringing all of this up because there is a Mon cala prince in this episode, and I’m wondering if he might be the future king Ech-Char, who Leia meets with just prior to the rise of skywalker.
    Anyways, I love the design of the quarren ship. It is shaped like the head of a queen but it also has the bulges on the outside. These are like the design of the mon Calamari capital ships that we saw in Return of the jedi. So the planets' two species share some design techniques.
    And the interior is also very cool. I love how, since this is an aquatic species, the captain’s chair has the option to be underwater. And they bring her this like fish martini in a nice glass, just so they can dump this fish in the tank. It’s the kind of detail that makes the world feel rich and lived in, without having to explain every corner of the galaxy.
    The ship is going to Trask, that’s the planet from the season 2 episode the heiress which like I said was directed by bryce dallas Howard and introduced us to live action bo katan.
    Doug: Oh yeah, the one with the frog lady.
    Yes, the one with the frog lady. And the happiest moment is Star wars. [how do I live]
    Keeps ad
    So they’re taking trade routes to Trask. And you might remember the taxation of trade routes being mentioned in the opening crawl; to the phantom menace. Basically, there are hyperspace lanes all throughout the galaxy that kind of work like highways. Just like we use turnpikes for shipping goods, the hyperspace lanes are used for trade between planets.
    So then they run up on an imperial star destroyer that has been seized by Bo Katan’s mandalorians. This is not the same ship that took in the heiress, but we do see that ship parked at the end of the episode.
    On the ship we see Axe wolves and koska reeves, who we also met in that episode. But Koska Reves is played by Merceds Varnado, aka snoop dogg's cousin, aka mercedes mone, aka sasha banks [bank statement clip]. And notice that she bars the symbol of the night owl on her pauldron. That’s the sect of female mandalorians that traditionally follow bo katan.
    The captain's name is shoggoth, which is probably a reference to the HP lovecraft squid monster the shoggoth. Kind of on the nose for a squid face, but a cool homage to the creatures that inspired the kinds of monsters e we see in Star Wars.

    Another line that I think did a bunch of heavy lifting, is when Bo-Katan said “too much Mandalorian blood has already been spilt by our own hands.” It’s why she never challenged Djin for the saber, and I think showcases why she’s the best leader for this group. It shows that she wasn’t willing to harm one of her people for a symbol, and that she’s holding Mandalorian life above all else. It really honors the growth that she had as a character throughout Clone Wars and Rebels, while also defining her as a person now.

Din currently has none of those, so what better way to is there, than to gain all that, interning for bo katan? Uniting mandalorians and retaking mandalore and killing moff is bo's unfinished character arc from clone wars and rebels.

    It’s interesting to observe how Din is highly effective at ingratiating himself with ugnaughts, tuskens, and other oppressed/stigmatized demographics, but he is so persistently ruthless with droids. And this seems in spite of the fact that we are seeing more and more humanization and personification of droids in the contemporary canon. I loved the line from the bartender about “human life is so short.” Such a fascinating and enjoyable episode. And Grogu’s knighthood feels like a perfect time capsule to revisit someday somehow - maybe in some other show set hundreds of years in the future.

      We've seen Bo didn't try to take charge of the Tribe, and only came back to the Nite Owls when the Armorer reminded her she was the best choice for leader. Her keeping Din around is making me think she can't help but doubt she is the one fate wants to lead Mandalorians. It'll literally be her fourth attempt while the other three ended in dramatic failures.
      From then on, three possibilities: Din goes back to space dad and Bo becomes Mand'alor, Bo is wounded/doublecrossed/killed by Moff Gideon and Din is forced to intervene to take charge (and perhaps save her), Bo confesses to Din (BoDin fans would love that).
      One thing seems to be certain though: Moff Gideon will return and almost certainly try to take back the Darksaber.

      Grogu story and din jarins story rhyme, and as a story telling device, it works perfectly because through grogus journey from foundling to mandelorian, we're also learning din jarins story from foundling to mandelorian.

    I'm sad people aren't enjoying it as much as previous seasons. I myself, I'm loving all of it

    • @VlPER007
      @VlPER007 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think people aren't enjoying it because:
      1. It's basically sidelined the actual main characters while trying to force us to care about the pretender / failure?
      2. Kind of like what was mentioned above, they set up Mandalorian culture so brilliantly, just to tear it all down with ridiculous loop holes and nonsense.
      3. Grogu is basically just a pet now, who occasionally does force stuff of zero consequence.
      4. While I don't think most of the episodes are as bad as some people seem to think, the fact that they are doing soooo much world building at the expense of furthering an actual story arc while at the same point only giving us 8 episodes after a 2+ YEAR wait is a little frustrating. This is only aggravates the above points further. They have already set up like 3 or 4 different plot lines and then done nothing with any of them...
      5. Bo didn't "earn" anything. Din was NOT defeated in actual combat as dictated by creed. The darksaber fell after he got caught in a scooby trap. The spider droid did nothing but sit there and watch. Then cart him off. Again, another example of irritating loop holes being used to force us to care about and believe in Bo. Din using that "fight" to give Bo the darksaber is nothing more than an excuse at the absolute best and more like poor writing to "legitimize" Bo and make us think she is THE Mandalorian.
      I have been a huge Mandalorian fan for many years and have just been giddy with this show. But I find myself caring less and less about it now despite my love of the culture because of all these exasperating annoyances that only keep growing in ramifications and number.
      I wouldn't even mind seeing Bo being built up. I just can't stand her being forced down my throat at the expense of characters I do actually have an interest in.

    • @Molluskcentral
      @Molluskcentral ปีที่แล้ว

      My main gripe is the short episodes. It has been frustrating to tune in and then have it be the length of a Clone Wars episode. 4 of the 6 so far I believe have an in show run time of over 30 minutes or are damn near on 30 minutes. Such short episodes makes me want them to have just dumped the season all at once.

      They probably lost lots of viewers just with this one atrocious episode. I wouldn't expect a fourth season after seeing this. Someone at Disney just screwed up very badly.

      @@VlPER007 i don't think shifting the story to a wider Mandalorian plot is necessarily a bad choice, but the execution of that story on screen has been shaky.
      It was always going to be difficult to develop Grogu's character given that he's still a baby at fifty years old. They pretty much designed this character-writing problem into the show's premise. Right? If they are to keep the story going, they have to write around Grogu. In truth, that's always been the case. He's always been a "pet" as you put it. At best, he was a pet the moment he stopped being Mando's McGuffin a few episodes into Season One.
      As for your comments on the value for production time ... Well, there are reasons why studios have always considered science fiction a high budget venture - at least since it stopped being a B-flick genre back in the 1950s/60s. If you are a fan of quality science fiction, you will notice that you spend a lot of time waiting for the next decent film or serialized show that isn't cheap or awful in some way. Welcome to the club.
      The biggest problem that Disney confronts with the Star Wars franchise is that Disney has a corporate culture, not an artistic one. This means a lot of scriptwriting which has the stamp of "writing by committee" on it (that's not a compliment.). And they are prone to indulge in excess displays of cloying fan service to the point where they will fill hours of footage with winks and nods to the audience. ("Hey! Here's an obvious reference to something in another Star Wars! Get it? Get it?!") This might satisfying to fans in the short term, but it is NOT in the long term. It's like the fast food of film and television. You can get full on it very quickly but it's not very satisfying and you'll shit it out pretty quickly after consuming it.

    I honestly loved the cameos, I clapped for joy at the first two and let out a straight up yelped at the third. It was a needed transition from one phase of the story to the other and resolved an outstanding plot point in a way that didn't create unneeded tension. Din didn't want the dark saber and this is a way to move the story forward without extra drama that would have been out of character for him.

    I dug the episode, we don't have to be in a race to the end of the story. It reminds me how back in Season 1 it felt like it might be mostly an adventure-of-the-week series that gradually reveals a larger story, rather than a GoT type serial with galactic stakes. Both are great. Sometimes it's nice to just enjoy the ride.

    i absolutely loved the way the Super Battle Droid behaved when it was exposed. the way it seemed to hesitate for a split second before breaking into a dead sprint, and the panicked way it moved as it fled just seemed so .. human. I feel like it really showed that military droids are also fully sentient beings, just like all of the cute "civilian" droids.
    The SBD's have always been portrayed as nearly unstoppable, walking tanks. They show up and everyone opens fire, as they lumber steadily forward into the sea of explosions and blaster rounds, before a massive airstrike or other ordinance ravages the battlefield. then the music gets extra music-y, and everyone watches on in horror as the B-2s emerge unfazed from the wall of smoke, and begin wiping everyone out.
    That stiff, methodical, "generic robot" movement isn't a mechanical limitation. It's military discipline.
    it's honestly so much scarier now.

    • @Lazarultos
      @Lazarultos ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Damn, I didn't think of it that way. Star Wars has been really inconsistent with the way they portray droids, with some being emotionless machines fulfilling their tasks, and others like the OOM Battle Droid commanders, Astromechs, and Tactical Droids dripping with personality. While most SBD's don't talk and just walk and fight, there are some like in episode 1 of The Clone Wars which was begging its fellow SBD's to not shoot him while he was "malfunctioning". The idea that some of the Battle Droids could have developed "personality quirks" because of how long they've been in active service AND STILL be willing to march slowly into gunfire and explosions to carry out their bloody task is really scary to imagine.
