    In January 2020, Sue & I were honored to be interviewed by hosts Nicole & Jason of the Podcast "The Nomadic Traveler", a travel Podcast about getting out of your house, off of technology and out experiencing life. In this Part 1 of 2 Podcast episode, we discussed our most popular video "RV LIVING COSTS - ONE YEAR FULL TIME TRAVEL IN A CLASS A MOTORHOME - EP76" published August 2019.
    Use the following link to listen to Part 1 of 2 of this audio podcast: www.podbean.com/ew/pb-nk4a2-ce0f15
    We will be publishing our 6 month update to this August 2019 video, and expect it to be out in January 2020.

      Thanks Jason & Nicole. We loved it! Especially with the added "suspense" of having to wait for Part 2 of 2 finishing up the discussion next week.

    From 1 engineer to another Mark, disregard the comments of spending too much for maint. In the end of use scenario it will come back to you, just give the new owner a look at these fine videos you are producing. The 8 % depreciation is reasonable but pie in the sky. Anything with wheels has a compounding rate. But in your case the salvage value will be stellar. You are a person who is in " preventative mode " as opposed to the other 95 % who are not. That is a good way to live and enjoy. And please continue doing so. Cheers.

      I have scheduled all of the rear engine diesel radiator hoses to be changed this coming November at Gaffney Freightliner proactively! Of course, if they blow out and fail before November 2022,.....then it will end up being re-actively!

      Gaffney Freightliner is the only chassis place that makes you feel safe when you are in their care. Other dealers should send in spies and copy what they are doing! They would be able to keep 10 bays busy every day, all year long!

    I'm boondocking in our rig (in a a Cracker Barrel parking lot in South Carolina) watching your channel and catching up on all your videos on our iMac. Tiffany is in Grand Rapids, MI on business and we will be meeting up in NC in a couple of days. We will then stay put for 3 weeks for Christmas and New Year's until we start making our way back down to FL for winter. Great tips about waiting with your rig to make sure everything gets taken care of while you are there and packing a lunch. Glad y'all got there safe. No night driving for me.

    Really enjoyed the video, I definitely agree with your proactive/preventative maintenance philosophy. A friend of mines gaser died out in the middle of nowhere and they had to deal with the local "talent" to get some major engine repairs done. Their coach broke down again 60 miles later.

      You are the man Timothy! Back in the day I would have been chomping at the bit to do all that myself. @@OurJourneyInMyles I need to get an option from you and Sue if you don't mind ? I have two options in getting a motorhome first thing I can pay all my bills down to the point where I will have almost everything paid off. So:
      (1) Sale my house and get like a 2014 or 15 or 16 motorhome. Regardless I will get a tag axel 43' to 45' also has to have 1 1/2 bath with my wife a must.
      (2) not sale my house and get a older motorhome. Around 2008 with same has to have tag axel, 45', 1 1/2 bathroom.
      If I put like $20,000 fixing up my house. I could get $900.00 per month on rent. Have
      good rental insurance so if the damage house insurance pays and goes after renter.
      Ok I will have income around 5K per month. If I don't sale house $900.00 more per month. again motorhome paid for and no bills . Having already done this what would you do ? Please help ?

    Air Filter: bought our DP coach used and filter had never been changed due to low mileage (1 year before installation and as Mark correctly stated, they have a 2 yr service life for a max life of 3 years before the paper core can begin to deteriorate. Our filter was 6+ years old!!! Removed & replaced immediately and performed an autopsy on that old filter. Found the paper to be brittle and ready to be sucked into the turbo. Luckily, no missing paper 🙏. Change it every 2 years = cheap insurance.

    Great video, Mark and Sue! Thank you for sharing your experience. Yes....I really like your maintenance strategy--- if there is any question, get it fixed ASAP......or, if you are at the main master Freightliner shop and there is anything that is going to be due in the next few months, just get it done now. A $500 premium paid now is FAR better than being stuck on the side of the road in the middle of the night out in nowhere USA. I used to have a diesel VW station wagon. I'd make the 900 mile trek to St Louis every 3-5 years to have the Guru of the USA do the major stuff. Safe travels.......and stay healthy! Really enjoying your videos!!

      If you have the time and abilities,......upsize the rear tire about three widths, add a rear hub motor, and (maybe) put the batteries on a rack above the front tire. On our LWB bikes, the front tire loading was already WAY TOO LOW. Even a small stone in the road would through us around. Good luck. Keep an eye on your CG and weight distribution!

    Our RV is on a Spartan chassis so we can't go there but our home base isn't that far from Spartan headquarters and service center. Hey Robert! I have to agree with you. I spent this much when I first started out at an Oasis Freightliner garage in Oak Creek Wisconsin. They forgot to refill my antifreeze when they flushed the small radiator on my Onan house generator and broke the transmission oil pan plug, which they "forgot" to tell me. I found this out 9 months later. The next one I visited in Sheboygan WI hooked my slide out topper arm on their electric garage door power cord,.....and ripper it out of their control box,......and wouldn't you know it,.....they "forgot" to tell me that too! I like places that aren't forgetful.

      I knew I had to settle on something for my own piece of mind,......to get ready for the hit. I researched many vlogs, blogs and facebook groups. I understand that high end, high quality units will depreciate LESS than lesser quality units. I could find numbers all over the mao, some with fairly good historical data and/or explanations. I felt comfortable that the 8% figure was a good number after my research, and that it did not sugar coat reality. I do not have saved, support data for this. Feel free to change the figure on my spreadsheets!

    Wow, I appreciate you wanting every thing perfect but You have only put 5000 miles, why change all fluids and belts. Fluids last much more and if your belts had a problem at 5k there is another issue that needs to be looked at for the route cause or you are an easy sell . My guess is you want everything perfect but leave yourselves vulnerable to salesmen who make their living with sales. Best wishes and enjoy your journey. Fun to watch

      Most motorhome maintenance is time based per Freightliner schedules. Miles mean almost nothing in the RV world because the vehicles are sitting around so much. I worked 9 years at a large auto repair center so I am aware of up sell. You all will have to make your own decisions on how proactive you want to be on your rig & equipment. No one has a crystal ball, so we all try to error on the side of safety. Your tires will have a production date code on them. (Look at our episode "MICHELIN MOTORHOME TIRES | TYRON BANDS | NIRVC RETTROBAND RV TIRE SAFETY DEVICE | CENTRAMATIC EP99") Most likely they were made in mid 2013. Your coach will soon be mid 2021. That's 8 years. I believe most folks would replace them. I would have had them gone a year ago. If money is really tight,.......AT LEAST DO THE FRONTS. Remember, besides the safety with regards to life and limb, blowouts cause a TON of vehicle damage to the bodywork! Good luck with your dilemma! Thanks for watching. Check out the RVGeeks TH-cam channel and website with regards to their tire changing recommendations. They have 3 videos. This one is the newest: th-cam.com/video/gy2UEJnBSyE/w-d-xo.html

    Just a quick question since you're running a Cummins engine why are you not using Valvoline blue? You can add another 20,000 miles on your warranty just by running Valvoline blue in a Cummings Engine

    I purchased a 2000 Holiday Rambler Vacationer with 32,000 original miles. I live in New Jersey and there isn't much in the way of MH repair places here. Josephine (named after my Mom) is a gasser and I have no idea where the nearest place like the Freight liner place that you use would be closest to me. She is on a Ford chassis. What would you suggest for me to search for in Google to find someplace like you found? I have no idea when the latest maintenance was preformed on her. I am learning so much from your videos. Thanks so much for sharing them. I would be hitting the rode full time until June 2020 and want to make sure Josephine is in perfect condition before we head out.

      Your best bet is to get a FREE account name set up on the website irv2.com so you can go to the Holiday Rambler group and post those exact questions on it. Of course you should first SEARCH the irv2 site with those question "key words", because most likely that discussion and answer thread may already exist! Also check for a Holiday Rambler Facebook group,.......I would expect a large one already exists. Groups like this already have all the answers to questions like this. Good luck!

    What RV has the lowest maintenance; Fifty wheel, travel trailer, class B Ect ?

    • @OurJourneyInMyles
      @OurJourneyInMyles  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am totally guessing because I have never really studied it,.......but,.........I have to think the best bang for the RV buck for most folks is a fifth wheel & a properly sized truck.

    I see a weigh station sing on this vid, and i wonder, do you have to stop at weigh stations and get weighed by DOT?

    • @OurJourneyInMyles
      @OurJourneyInMyles  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      NO RV's have to stop to get weighed in any states. You should get the individual tire loading weight on your rig immediately so you know what to inflate your tires to. The Heavy Duty trucks that look like semi's pulling 5th wheels need to have the proper signs on them that say, "Private Coach-Not For Hire" on them, and must not pull any other trailers or cargo unless they replate the vehicle and get the proper DOT paperwork & certification.

    Where did you get the 8% depreciation figure in your spreadsheet ?

    • @OurJourneyInMyles
      @OurJourneyInMyles  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you research the blogs quickly on the internet, you can find any number you want to believe. But if you research them slowly, ......by brand, .....by RV model and year......, and take into account the caliper & quality of the information source, you will start to see recurring themes and percentages. Sorry,..have no hard source for you. The 8% is the GUESS that I have decided to believe for our particular situation, the 2014 Newmar Dutch Star model 4369. Hoping that in the end, it doesn't end up larger!
