    Brilliant as usual. I teach competitive shooting and many students always ask the same questions: “which gun, holster, optical sight, etc should I buy to become a great shooter.?” My answer is always the same ... “you want to become a great shooter? Buy more bullets!” Trying to buy your way to an expert skill level has never worked in any experienced based activity and never will. Want to become better at catching fish offshore? Buy more gas for your boat!

    Jonny, I started watching your TH-cam videos a couple of years ago. I am a 71 year old kayak bass angler. I have a Lowrance unit with side imaging, downscan, 2D and GPS, which I am not proficient with, but you are a real encouragement to me to learn how to use what I've got. Thanks for sharing and exercising your teaching gifts.

    That's the ticket right there. Guys put all these graphs on their boats starting out and don't want to put in the time to learn them. They hit the lake and hit the bank 90% of the time. Side imaging/gps does it for me. I don't agree with all the math but you definitely did well with what you had. Good video, man.

    Thank you. I have noticed as I upgraded my electronics over the years, I was not catching more fish. Now I know why. I will definitely by registering for your electronics class. Time to master the side/down imaging game from the console rather than blindly casting at every dot and getting skunked. Although for me, a good day on white bass, crappie, or walleye is as fun as bass. But increasing the chances is really what I am looking for.

    Great video Jonny. I made it all the way to the end and could have watched another 30 minutes on the topic. One of the points you touched on indirectly but it struck me as data synthesis. The better the angler can form a hypothesis, i.e. bait selection and technique, from the info learned from their units, the more bass they will catch or conversely, the less time they will waste fishing in non-productive circumstances. I had drawn the same conclusions about the technologies based primarily on your previous videos on DI, SI, and Livescope, using the 80/20 rule of thumb. The money spent on tech that will get you 80% there is the sweet spot (DI, SI, gps). The last 20% will cost you as much or more (livescope, 360, etc) than the first 80%. This comment if far too long, but great job!! Love the info and I can tell it took weeks and weeks to boil everything down into this great video.

    Your analysis puts the application of electronics into a logical perspective...most avid bass anglers do not have the time to invest to actually become electronic experts...I'm guessing that 90% of avid bass anglers will never need more than SI/DI/GPS & 360.

    Already liked some days ago. Just want to say I don't know why you are only at 98.1K subscribers. You are, by far, the best instructor on fish finders on TH-cam. You are gifted as a teacher. Your ability to communicate complex ideas, clarity, and systemic way of teaching is unmatched. Bravo. Thank you. (Unfortunately I don't think that fishfinders are designed for my type of fishing need - meaning I really only need to scan the top 10 feet below the surface for fish that swim in large circles and don't have any need to scan the bottom of the waters. However, it seems that DI, SI, and Mega360 are mostly about seeing the bottom part of the waters for structures and fish right?) Thanks again.

    Like I’ve said to you before, I love the science of fishing and this was a fascinating video. I can really appreciate the work and time that went into it. One thing that is clear and undeniable to me from all of your (and Randy’s) videos is that all of the analysis of all the data, science and statistics still point to the same thing. Nothing is more important than learning & knowing all you can about Bass behavior, habitat and forage, and that you must put in the hours/days/months on the water to really learn that. If you don’t, all the fancy electronics and other contraptions won’t help you that much if any. Good job on this video. Very well put together.

      Electronics are ruining bass fishing. Do you think Jacob Wheeler or the kid from Auburn that won back to back classics are better bass fishermen than KVD is? The answer the way things are going and probably not change because like anything cash trumps (no pun intended) fishing and everything else.
      I think people my age or older ,I’m 49 have never dialed a rotary phone. They have never lived in a world where technology is not king. Therefore I believe some young anglers really have a big advantage using all this new technology. But they aren’t better fishermen. Every time I get a trick figured out on location of feeding fish, the young people blast off and smoke me and my alumna craft with a 115. But I’m not paying anyone in the world to hear them talk about bass fishing. I think I am more versatile than most fishermen. Due to fishing for Coosa River bass since I can remember. I love fishing the bank grass edges for good spots and then I get in thick and catch something to help me most of the time.

  • @csmith0921
    @csmith0921 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Really good content - In a nutshell the biggest difference seems to come down to anglers who learn and use thier electronics to "fail fast" - If they aren't biting move on. As someone who often fishes multi species I think the ROI (fish per hour) for forward facing technology increases when considering mass-schooling species like crappie, especially when they are holding around standing timber that's difficult to graph otherwise. I am signing up for your online seminars and will probably get a personal map done of my local water later this spring and thank you (and Randy) for your efforts.

This information has definitely helped guide my purchase and use of the different types of graphs available. I’m a novice when it comes to electronics and will be buying my first bass boat very soon. Thanks for helping me not make an expensive mistake, I’ll be getting a good side and down imaging combo unit and become proficient at that before getting the 360 or live imaging. Thanks, you really are a gifted teacher.

    After watching Randy’s mini rant on Forward facing sonar, I realized that I was correct in thinking about putting some limitations on technology in pro bass fishing. My ancestors lived during the industrial revolution. We are absolutely in the technology revolution. By judging by how fast and how much graphs are changing, I absolutely think that if nothing changes, the metaphor of video game fishing will further destroy tournament fishing.
    Johnny you are an extremely smart angler. I also know you ❤️ LOVE To fish off shore as much as possible. U love putting the puzzle together that is bass fishing as much or more than u enjoy catching bass. LAm I close?
    Do you fish offshore during pre and post spawn? I know you don’t. Nobody does. Because they making baby’s
    In dirt shallow water . How do you fish offshore when every bass in the world is in skinny water. How do you typically fish during that precious time of year? Are you possibly holding your self back? Name a lure and techniques you are absolutely proficient at in the spawn ?

I’ve had my Lowrance with SI, DI, 2D and maps for about 5 years and still treat them like 2D. This is a good video. Thanks for making it. I am not a bass fisherman but I do fish for walleye, salmon and pike. Some of that fishing is trolling. I am looking for a fish finder that "talks to" the trolling motor so I can follow a contour line or retrace a path over and over while I just fish. Having a boat on "auto pilot" is huge for me since I am mostly alone. I realize the possibilities are endless, but this info helps me with some of the decisions I will be making.

  • @primelegend9504
    @primelegend9504 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    A few things missed that id like to expand on. First off, live scope transducers do not have to go on the trolling motor. You can get a transducer arm so you can spot lock on offshore spots and still be able to move the transducer without turning your spot lock off. There is also no data for the combined 360 and live scope, but I also believe 360 is being undervalued some in your video. I know the focus is offshore fishing, but 360 will be used almost 100% of the time from shallow to offshore. Depends on the person but live scope will be used on average from 5ft at the most shallow all the way to deep water. The reason for the trolling motor mounted live scope is for the shallow water fishermen. They will scan while slowly moving through an area to pin point structure or find fish. If they want to video game fish they put talons, powerpoles, raptors down so that the TM can be moved freely. This is fine, and many bass anglers do great with just live scope fishing this way, but they give up the ability to fish offshore effectively/quickly. Now imagine if you had your live scope on a x-ducer pole instead of the TM, offshore fishing, spot locked, let the boat settle into position. Point the live scope at the target. You can effectively and quickly video game fish offshore. More and more anglers are going this route, even though its the "crappie setup". Some are even going farther and having 2 black boxes and 2 transducers so when shallow they can just use the TM.

    • @FishtheMoment
      @FishtheMoment  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great insight! I tried to focus exclusively on offshore fishing to make things less complicated (though it was still a lot of info to cover.) I am definitely going to experiment with the transducer on a pole instead of the trolling motor and talk about how to use 360 imaging and Livescope in shallow water. Thanks for the great comment!

    Nice job with breaking it down using data rather than opinion. Its a hard topic with lots of opinions these days and I think as these more advanced products really settle into the markets then these averages will change further as the tools are more refined for ease of use. For now though the amount of fishing experience needed to help truly take advantage of these tools is still high.

    Jonny, this video is great. I always thought side/down imaging was just as good as forward/360 live imaging. Like you say, you have to get out and practice with the technology at hand. Way to debunk the rumors regarding forward / 360 imaging being better than down/side imaging. This should help a lot of people save a considerable amount of money on unnecessary technology. Appreciate all your hard work.

    Ditto Grehunnter below! I'm not looking for bass, more for catfish and carp. Maybe the occasional walleye. Information really helps.

    Are the pros already running mega live or is it still vaporware? How's the quality compared to Livescope?

    Really liked this one! Very educational and informative. One question though, Would you recommend a side and down imaging unit on the bow for a novice or just down imaging only and why? This is assuming there is already side imaging at the console. It does seem to me that side imaging at the bow would be helpful while "shallow" ( 5-8 feet deep) water bank beating.

    Dang man - where are you getting your data from? Is there a database that BASS keeps up with? Cool stuff. I kind of am a data analyst by trade but get to do this for business but not fishing haha.

    I think a good way to break it down:
    Side Imaging: Use to find fish and structure
    Livescope/Active Target: Use to catch fish.
