- Buying your first fish finder or upgrading your existing fish finder can be confusing and stressful. Fish finder technology is rapidly advancing and keeping up the changes can be challenging. In this video Old Town brand ambassador @spiltmilt compares the basics of sonar, GPS, down imaging, and side imaging and discusses whether these are right for you and what anglers might find those features most useful.
Why do I feel like this is cheating 😂
Auto Chart Live.... THAT is an outstanding item I had no idea was available on the Helix! I've got a daily runner lake that doesn't show up on my lakemaster! oooooo Ima toggle THAT! Sure glad I stopped by!
Gotta love that Auto Chart live! Such a cool feature. 👊
Welp, it'll be 9 years since I bought my Vapor 10, caught lots of fish and explored many new watersheds. Thinking about caving in to technology and mounting a portable FF unit, the ability to find holes on rivers and to map my favorite lake would be a fantastic tool to utilize.
Forward facing sonar has certainly changed the game, that's for sure!
Great info! I got my first FF this year, Helix 9, and just starting to understand it’s use. Keep the info coming👍🏻
Best of luck out there!
@@OldTownCanoeKayak can I purchase the 106 pedal drive if that all the money I have to spend and then later drop a minn kota in the whole where the pedal drive goes ?
Like becuase SpiltMilt
Excellent video! My 9 yr old Lowrance 5 Elite broke and I'm seriously looking to replace or downsize (believe it or not) for a lightweight model. I do inshore saltwater fishing in Louisiana, and my main needs are water depth, temperature, and simple GPS for kayak speed. After upgrading from pedal drive to 3hp electric, I'm considering minimizing weight within the kayak. I'd love to have a navigation map overlay as I produced my satellite imagery for my broken Lowrance. I just don't know if I want to spend for those commercial maps.
new to the fishing and kayak scene - very useful info!
Question slightly off topic. If I purchase a sportsman 106 PDL pedal drive… can I later drop a minn kota in where the pedal drive goes
Old Town does not offer a motorized drive to replace the PDL drive. We do offer a 106 Powered by MinnKota, but that would not allow for a PDL drive.
Would the Garmin Striker 4 work on a kayak on deep waters like in the great lakes?
We recommend contacting Garmin with questions regarding the capabilities of their fish finders.
Side image would be good for a kayak, where down image would be good for a boat fishing reefs. Is that correct?
Can you change the frequency and what settings are best?
I have a 120 pdl yak love it.
I also have a boat so I'm looking for one fish f8nder for both.
Thank you
the fact that bro was talking while fighting a fish is crazy
Tyler always great content!
🙌🙌
My biggest concern is power drain. I use an outboard that doesn't charge my 12v deep cycle battery, so I have to depend on just that battery for starting my 25hp motor and running any electronics I may have. Plus I'm old and need a larger screen for visibility. My main targets are catfish, crappie and open water hybrids and/or sand bass, in that order.
One nice thing about kayaks is that they typically have much less components needing power, so your fish finder will last much longer when out on the water.
@@OldTownCanoeKayak I've owned two Old Town canoes in the past, so I understand. The only power drain on this boat is starting the motor. I've never went out at night, so the lights never get used. I wish someone would do a video about the best fish finders according to their power consumption.
What model helix 7 is that are they still made
Awesome video, great content. Thanks for sharing!
Have u ever seen a shark or a whale or something like that on a Fish Finder?
Absolutely - you see all kinds of cool things on sonar!
Nice video !!! Good info
Great to hear you enjoyed!
What lake is this?
I think I'm too dumb to fully comprehend the sonar
There are some great videos on Humminbird's channel that explain how sonar works and how to read it!
@OldTownCanoeKayak worth a shot dude thanks!
