Today we start the fourth-day practice of the Beginner’s series with exercises that strengthen our legs. Strong legs ensure swift mobility. People with strong legs would not have leg or knee pain as they age. Their bones and muscles would remain strong, despite minor aches and falls. Therefore, working on the legs is very important. So let’s start with a crucial part of our Yogic Sadhana. (1:02) Prayer We begin today’s sadhana by praying to Lord Shiva- the destroyer of inner and outer evil. ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम् । उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान् मृत्योर्मुक्षीय मामृतात् ॥ ॐ शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिः॥ Translation: I pray to the fragrant Lord Shiva of three eyes, who nourishes all living beings. May He help us remove our bondages by realizing our eternal nature. Three times Shanti is chanted to remove three types of world miseries. (1:50) Kadam Tal/Walking Benefits: It is the primary, natural and easiest way of loosening leg muscles. It works on all the muscles of a leg. Walking is the best cardio workout Contraindications: It is the safest mode of leg exercise but is prohibited by people with leg injuries or surgeries. People with complications in pregnancy or illness might also be prohibited from walking. (4:24) Knee Bending Benefits: This practice loosens the knee joints. This fun-filled practice can remove minor aches and stiffness in the knees. Contraindications: People with terrible leg pain or knee problems must avoid this practice. (4:59) Walking in Tadasana Benefits: Tadasana helps the heart function healthily. It also increases lung and breathing capacity. Contraindications: People with foot injuries (even ligament injuries) must avoid Tadasana until recovery. (6:42) Ankle Rotation Benefits: This simple practice rejuvenates the entire body by improving the blood circulation of the nerve endings of the foot. Contraindications: People with a foot injury or pain must not practice ankle rotation in the standing position. (7:46) Knee Rotation Benefits: It loosens the knee joints. It helps to remove uric acid deposition around it. This pressure instantly rejuvenates a tired knee joint. Contraindications: People with knee injuries must practice knee rotation under a yoga therapist’s guidance. People with knee replacement must not do this practice. When practiced while standing, it puts pressure on the foot region. Thus, people with foot pain or injuries must not practice it in a standing position. (8:36) Tiriyak Tadasana Benefits: It stretches and pressurizes the limbs alternately along the body’s sides. Therefore, it helps in reducing abdominal fat and flexing the back muscles. This asana helps to maintain healthy digestive and excretory systems. Contraindications: People with abdominal surgery, back and neck surgery, or pain must avoid this practice. (10:48) Kati-Chakrasana Benefits: This asana helps to relieve constipation. It tones up the upper body muscles. It also strengthens and improves the flexibility of the waist and spine. Contraindications: One must avoid Kati-Chakrasana in case of severe neck or back pain and abdominal surgeries. One must also prevent the dynamic practice of this asana if one feels giddy while practicing it. (12:36) Vrikshasana Benefits: It improves the functioning of the heart as you stretch your arms to open the branches of a tree. It makes the foot and leg muscles stronger. Contraindications: Avoid this asana if you suffer from a foot injury or weak legs. Also, avoid the practice if feeling giddy while concentrating. (16:07) Veerabhadrasana Benefits: Tones and strengthens knees, thighs, hip joints, back muscles, and shoulders. It helps attain balance as you concentrate on a single point to maintain the position. Contraindications: People with knee pain or hip joint problems must avoid this asana. Avoid this asana in case of surgeries also. (20:40) Trikonasana Benefits: This pose is a blessing for the desktop worker, as it tones and strengthens the knees, legs, back, abdomen, and neck muscles. Contraindications: People with neck and back pain and surgery patients should avoid this asana. Even blood pressure patients must practice it under a yoga therapist’s guidance. (23:02) Twisting while Bending down Benefits: This position stretches the entire back side of the leg, thereby strengthening its muscles. It helps in toning the abdominal and back muscles. cough and cold. Contraindications: People with neck and back pain and surgery patients should avoid this asana. (24:27) Utkatasana Benefits: This pose puts tremendous pressure on the knees and thigh muscles, toning them. It also tones the back and abdominal muscles Contraindications: Avoid this position in case of severe knee pain or weakness in the feet and legs. (26:52) Apana Asana Benefits: It puts tremendous pressure on the abdomen, massaging the abdominal organs, and improving the digestion and excretory system. Contraindications: People with abdominal surgery or knee or hip pain must avoid this asana. (29:20) Prayer Chanting of Omkar, in the end, is like offering a prayer to the Almighty with multiple physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual benefits that Omkar chanting offers. It is like surrendering the practice. ॐ पूर्णमदः पूर्णमिदं पूर्णात्पूर्णमुदच्यते । पूर्णस्य पूर्णमादाय पूर्णमेवावशिष्यते ॥ ॐ शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिः ॥ Translation: That is Complete (divine consciousness).
