On the fifth-day practice of the Beginner’s series, we learn techniques that help to bend forward and increase the flexibility of our legs. Due to sedentary work, our spine and legs become stiff and weak. Today we will gift our body a relaxed spine and stronger legs. We are going to use a prop today. So, keep a strip, rope, or dupatta handy. Let’s get started! (0:33) Prayer ॐ सह नाववतु । सह नौ भुनक्तु । सह वीर्यं करवावहै । तेजस्वि नावधीतमस्तु मा विद्विषावहै । ॐ शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिः ॥ Translation: May He protect both of us together. May He nourish both of us together. May we work together with great energy. May we not have disputes with each other. Three times Shanti is chanted to remove three types of world miseries. (1:14) We start by shaking our legs. A simple practice to remove tiredness and increase blood and energy circulation towards the legs. (1:53) Sukhasana Benefits: This simple sitting position activates essential muscles of the legs- inner thigh, outer leg, knees, calf muscles, ankles, and toes. This balances the knee and lowers the back muscles of their monotonous positions on the chair seating. Contraindications: People with severe knee or other problems of toes or ankles should not practice Sukhasana without the supervision of a Yoga Therapist. (4:03) Rotating back in Sukhasana Benefits: Rotation increases the awareness of the lower region of our body. It activates the lower back and abdominal muscles. Contraindications: People with severe lower back pain must avoid this practice. Even abdominal surgery patients must avoid this practice until the doctor nods. (5:22) Stretching in Sukhasana Benefits: This position stretches the back region up to the last vertebrae. This removes lethargy and increases blood and energy circulation towards the head region. Contraindications: People with severe back and neck pain and abdominal surgeries must not practice this kind of stretching. (9:47) Legs can be shaken after this practice to remove the stiffness of the folded legs. (10:07) Forward Stretching in Baddha konasana Benefits: Baddha Konasana stretches the inner part of the thighs and activates the entire inner leg. It stretches the entire back and puts positive pressure on it. This helps in relieving stiffness in the back. Contraindications: People with neck and back pain should not bend in Baddha Konasana. Even patients with abdominal surgery should avoid practicing this asana till recovery. (13:28) Upavishtha Konasana Benefits: In this practice, the inner part of the legs is stretched and activated. Upavishtha Konasana puts tremendous pressure on the hip joints, improving blood and energy circulation. Contraindications: People with neck and back pain should not bend in Upavishtha Konasana. Even patients with abdominal surgery should avoid practicing this asana till recovery. (18:33) Stretching with one leg forward Benefits: This practice has similar benefits to forward bending as discussed earlier- increase in blood circulation towards the head and heart, stretching and strengthening of the leg muscles, stretching of the spine, the flexibility of the spine, strength of the shoulders, and improvement in digestive, reproductive, and respiratory systems. Contraindications: People with neck and back pain should not bend in this position. Even patients with abdominal surgery should avoid practicing this asana till recovery. (23:30) Rocking on the back Benefits: This practice puts pressure on the entire back region. It massages the whole spine. Contraindications: People with neck or back pain must consult a Yoga Therapist before practicing. In some aches, this might help, but other pains might worsen. Thus, it’s better to consult a therapist to understand the nature of the pain and then practice. People with abdominal surgeries must avoid this practice. People with knee and shoulder pain must be careful while practicing this dynamic activity. (24:15) Dynamic practice between Paschimotasana and Uttana Padasana Benefits: The dynamic movement massages the entire spine and back region. It strengthens the core. Straight legs ensure proper blood and energy circulation in the legs. Contraindications: People with neck or back pain must consult a Yoga Therapist before practicing. In some aches, this might help, but other pains might worsen. Thus, it’s better to consult a therapist to understand the nature of the pain and then practice. People with abdominal surgeries must avoid this practice. People with knee and shoulder pain must be careful while practicing this dynamic activity. (26:29) Dynamic practice between Malasana and Hasta Padasana Benefits: Malasana improves the flow of the downward flowing energy of the body. Thus, it helps to improve the functions of the excretory and reproductive systems. Hasta Padasana, on the contrary, is a complete posterior stretch and anterior pressure to the body. Contraindications: People with neck or back pain must consult a Yoga Therapist before practicing. In some aches, this might help, but other pains might worsen. Thus, it’s better to consult a therapist to understand the nature of the pain and then practice. People with abdominal surgeries must avoid this practice. People with knee and shoulder pain must be careful while practicing this dynamic activity. (29:30) Stretching the legs with a prop Benefits: In Uttana Padasana, the stretch of our legs depends on the capacity of our abdominal muscles, the weight and strength of our thigh muscles, and the strength of the ankles and calf muscles. Contraindications: People with back and neck pain must avoid this stretch. The use of props for stretching and loosening must be done under the supervision of a Yoga Therapist. People with any surgery must not do this practice till recovery. (33:27) Jathara Parivartanasana Benefits: This asana strengthens the core and gives enormous flexibility to all twisted muscles. It removes fatigue and rejuvenates the entire body. It positively affects the digestive, excretory, reproductive, respiratory and circulatory systems. Contraindications: People with pain in any body part must practice under the guidance of a Yoga Therapist. People with surgery must seek consultation before practicing. (35:46) Apanasana Benefits: It puts tremendous pressure on the abdomen, massaging the abdominal organs, and improving the digestion and excretory systems. This is a curative asana for constipation. It also gently massages the back due to the pressure on it. Contraindications: People with abdominal surgery or knee or hip pain must avoid this asana. (36:12) Prayer Chanting of Omkar, in the end, is like offering a prayer to the Almighty with multiple physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual benefits that Omkar chanting offers. It is like surrendering the practice. ॐ पूर्णमदः पूर्णमिदं पूर्णात्पूर्णमुदच्यते । पूर्णस्य पूर्णमादाय पूर्णमेवावशिष्यते ॥ ॐ शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिः ॥ Translation: That is Complete (divine consciousness). This is also Complete (inner/individual consciousness). From one Complete another, Complete manifests (from divine consciousness, inner or individual consciousness manifests). Taking out Complete from the Complete, only Complete remains (Consciousness is Complete and remains). Three times Shanti is chanted to remove three types of world miseries. One experiences the effects of the sadhana on the body and feels a light of gratitude, love and compassion in the heart. Remembering the Guru, elders, friends and the Lord, one bows to them. After a comfortable amount of time, eyes are opened to feel the rejuvenation of today’s practice.

Benefits: This asana strengthens the core and gives enormous flexibility to all twisted muscles. It removes fatigue and rejuvenates the entire body. It positively affects the digestive, excretory, reproductive, respiratory and circulatory systems.
Contraindications: People with pain in any body part must practice under the guidance of a Yoga Therapist. People with surgery must seek consultation before practicing.
(35:46) Apanasana
Benefits: It puts tremendous pressure on the abdomen, massaging the abdominal organs, and improving the digestion and excretory systems. This is a curative asana for constipation. It also gently massages the back due to the pressure on it.
Contraindications: People with abdominal surgery or knee or hip pain must avoid this asana.
(36:12) Prayer
Chanting of Omkar, in the end, is like offering a prayer to the Almighty with multiple physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual benefits that Omkar chanting offers. It is like surrendering the practice.
ॐ पूर्णमदः पूर्णमिदं पूर्णात्पूर्णमुदच्यते ।
पूर्णस्य पूर्णमादाय पूर्णमेवावशिष्यते ॥
ॐ शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिः ॥
Translation: That is Complete (divine consciousness). This is also Complete (inner/individual consciousness). From one Complete another, Complete manifests (from divine consciousness, inner or individual consciousness manifests). Taking out Complete from the Complete, only Complete remains (Consciousness is Complete and remains).
Three times Shanti is chanted to remove three types of world miseries.
One experiences the effects of the sadhana on the body and feels a light of gratitude, love and compassion in the heart. Remembering the Guru, elders, friends and the Lord, one bows to them. After a comfortable amount of time, eyes are opened to feel the rejuvenation of today’s practice.
