Today we start with the third-day practice of the Beginner's Series with exercises that strengthen the back. These practices also increase blood and energy circulation in the spine region. The spinal cord is the energy channel of our body. Thus, the feeling of rejuvenation one experiences after these practices is unparalleled. They also help to remove lethargy and sleep problems and improve metabolism. So, stick to your Yoga mats for a rejuvenating experience. Let's get started! Before we begin, let's pray to the teacher, Guru, and also for everybody's well-being. (1:15) Prayer Om! ध्यानमूलं गुरुर्मूर्तिः पूजामूलं गुरुर्पदम् । मन्त्रमूलं गुरुर्वाक्यं मोक्षमूलं गुरूर्कृपा ॥ Translation: The root of meditation (dhyana) is the form of Guru. The root of worship is the feet (Padam) of the Guru. The root of the mantra is the word (Vaakyam) of the Guru. The root of liberation (moksha) is the Grace of the Guru. सर्वे भवन्तु सुखिनः । सर्वे सन्तु निरामयाः । सर्वे भद्राणि पश्यन्तु । मा कश्चित् दुःख भाग्भवेत् ॥ ॐ शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिः॥ Translation: Let everybody be happy, let everybody stay free of diseases, let everybody's life be glorious, and let not anybody be sad. Om shanti shanti shanti!!! Three times Shanti is chanted to remove three types of world miseries. (2:30) Moving and shaking Legs First, we move our feet to improve blood and energy circulation. We can also slowly shake our legs before folding them for other practices. (3:14) Full Butterfly Position Benefits: It improves blood and energy circulation around the hip joints. It improves the digestive and excretory systems. A mild stretch around the lower back (which is experienced only if the back is kept straight) gives good relief from nagging lower back pain. Contraindications: Since this position involves folding the entire leg from all joints, this practice should not be done in case of the toe, foot, knee, or hip injury or surgery. This practice is also difficult for people who cannot sit down and should then be practiced under the supervision of a Yoga therapist. In the case of back surgery, this practice should be avoided till the doctor gives the nod. (4:46) Janu Shirshasana Benefits: It gives a nice stretch to the back muscles and puts pressure on the abdominal region. It improves digestion. This practice also enhances blood circulation towards the heart. Contraindications: People with back, spine, shoulder, or neck problems must not do this practice. (11:17) Dynamic Marjariasana Benefits: It strengthens and gives flexibility to the spine and back muscles. This practice relieves neck and back pains as it bends and stretches the back and neck region alternately. Continuous neck and abdominal movements stimulate the thyroid glands' functioning and improve digestion. Contraindications: Position two must not be practiced if someone has spondylosis or backache. In that case, instead of dynamic practice, Marjarasana position one can be held steady for a longer time. People with back and stomach problems or surgeries should consult the doctor before practicing Dynamic Marjarasana. People with weak wrists and knees also need to be careful while performing this practice, as the body's weight rests on them. (13:30) Shashankasana Benefits: It increases blood circulation to the head region. Thus, it improves the health of the eyes and hair and removes the sinuses' blockages. This asana helps to calm down the mind. Contraindications: People with back and neck pain must not do this asana. People with headaches or head or shoulder injuries should do the asana under a yoga therapist's supervision. (14:45) Vyaghrasana Benefits: It loosens the spine, legs, and hip muscles. Due to its effect on the abdominal cavity, this asana improves digestion, excretion, and reproduction Contraindications: This asana must not be practiced by people with neck and back pain. People with weak shoulders and knees also find it challenging to sustain the position. In that case, one may try to attain the position as per one's capacity. If one does not exceed one's ability, this asana will be beneficial. This asana is to be practiced only if permitted to the surgery patients. (16:30) Uthith Balasana Benefits: It gives a phenomenal stretch to the upper portion of the body and spine. It improves blood circulation towards the head and heart region. Contraindications: People with spondylosis and backache should not practice this position. People with weak knees should also be careful while doing this practice. (17:25) Adhomukha Shvasana Benefits: It increases blood circulation to the head and heart, calming the mind. Thus, it has a curative effect on headaches, insomnia, anxiety, and tiredness.. Contraindications: Avoid this asana if you have weak shoulders and arms or a severe neck and back ache. But, if the neck or backache is mild, this position helps to relieve the pain. Post any surgery, practice this asana only after consultation. (20:18) Bharmanasana Benefits: The most essential and unique use of this asana is that it helps align the hands and legs. It helps to attain balance in the body as we learn to keep our spine straight. Contraindications: People with weak wrists, arms, and knees must perform this asana carefully. (21:48) Bhujangasana Benefits: It puts pressure on all the vertebrae of the spine, massaging them gently. It also improves the flexibility of the entire back. It stretches the whole abdominal region, improving digestion Contraindications: Do not practice Bhujangasana if you have undergone any abdominal or spinal surgeries. If your wrist and shoulder are weak, practice this asana carefully. (24:20) Makarasana Benefits: This asana makes the spine strong and flexible. It strengthens the core. It is also very beneficial for curing backache. It helps in relaxing the body and mind. Contraindications: Everybody must avoid it with surgery of the abdominal or chest region. (26:10) Apana Asana Benefits: It puts tremendous pressure on the abdomen, massaging the abdominal organs, and improving the digestion and excretory system. This is also a curative asana for constipation. Contraindications: People with abdominal surgery or knee or hip pain must avoid this asana. (26:27) Ananda Balasana Benefits: This practice improves digestion and the excretory system. It increases the blood circulation of the leg region. With pressure on the back, it gently massages the spine region. Contraindications: People with abdominal or knee surgery or surgery of the hip region must avoid this practice. (27:36) Dynamic Uttana Vakrasana Benefits: It improves the digestive, excretory and respiratory systems. It improves blood circulation towards the internal organs and rejuvenates their health and functioning. (29:25) Prayer Chanting of Omkar, in the end, is like offering a prayer to the Almighty with multiple physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual benefits that Omkar chanting offers. This is also Complete (inner/individual consciousness). From one Complete another, Complete manifests (from divine consciousness, inner or individual consciousness manifests).
