playing modded with my sister, I just added a usb wifi card to my PC, and we were rolling with LAN immediately. It is deceptively simple. Also, ngl, but many families playing minecraft together do it on console with splitscreen. I have thousands of hours with my own mother building things in creative on xbox 360... Realms fixes a problem that was already solved ages ago and much better.

Not always the best option, because LAN requires one person to be online and hosting at all times. If that person does not want to play Minecraft and the others do, well the others are out of luck. With a Realm, it is continuously hosted online for anyone to access regardless of the host's presence.

During peak hours when we had 8-10 people on the server would occasionally crash and overall be unplayable.

Realms make a little more sense on bedrock because of how terrible server support is on that version. They are simple and easy to access, and realms you are in appear in the friends tab and so are easy to get into, or if you own a realm it’s pinned above all of the worlds you have

Sad part is my friends all play on console and so for everyone to play we have to get a realm because apparently you can't add any servers you only have the ones Minecraft gives you on PlayStation. It sucks because I'd like to think I know more about technical Minecraft and could set up a server, plugin, make a data pack so on, but no I'm forced to use realms because of the monopoly that Mojang has over console servers

    • @TheKodeToad
      @TheKodeToad ปีที่แล้ว +14

This was only a big issue in the past AFAIK. Forge & Fabric do not distribute modified software, PaperMC distributes a binary patch, SpigotMC only distributes BuildTools (basically DIY). However, they probably have a good reason why you don't get shortcuts to install various mod loaders on the client side in their launcher (similar to MultiMC) - so it'd probably apply to realms too?

Had same issue with joining friends' realms and I would keep getting kicked. Can't remember the specific solution, but try lowering your render distance to reduce how much data is being sent between you and the server. Think it's something about a false positive in a system that prevents spamming the server or whatever.

  • @T3hPr0z
    @T3hPr0z ปีที่แล้ว +17

As can be seen from the render distance, the hardware resource allocation per realm is kept pretty much on the low end. There might be a dynamic ram system to accomodate more players for stability, but again, as minimal as possible. And like i saw someone else mention, this is essentially opening SP to LAN where the only control you really have is gamerules - which btw when you really don't have any basic knowledge of server management, won't really get any use out of.
And if we're going off of Java base, that money can be instead put into -like mentioned in video- a host, where you know what you're actually getting, with the optional customizability.
On top of that, from what i've seen, most (bigger)hosts have a decent knowledgebase/FAQ section, some even with video instructions, if you'd ever happen to get stuck or would want to change stuff, even if you're a little dumdum in server management department.
In conclusion, Realms really has no place in modern Minecraft. When it was announced 10 years ago, it was a nice official and simpler way to host a vanilla server cause back in the day we didn't have all these customization options, but with how big Minecraft is nowadays -all the mods, addons, plugins, different server platforms-, Realms really has turned obsolete nowadays and is sort of a scam with what it actually offers.

I decided to host a realm for a few people on Bedrock edition back in 2020. It took about 1 week for the realm to be joinable, it just wouldn't turn on. Eventually when it did work, more issues started to happen, trying to download the world would result in an error 99% of the time, trying to replace the world would lead into errors too. When everything started to work, entities would despawn very frequently, be it tamed or not. Later that year the realm would start crashing more frequently and data would corrupt.
In 2022 my friend decided to try hosting a realm, it was fine for the first 2 weeks, but then all entities would start despawning again, book and quill would have many pages corrupt and some chunks started acting weird.
Realms are extremly underwhelming, the render distance is stuck at 8 and does not have great hardware. I think it's fine for someone younger that want a easy way to play with friends, but setting up a server yourself isn't that hard, and even then, getting a server from a 3rd party host you can get both cheaper & better hardware. There is a bit of a limit to realms that Mojang doesn't really tell you, realms that is over 500mb will start having more issues, for Bedrock at least, worlds above 4-5gb will either not work, or be very broken.

  • @carotteatomique
    @carotteatomique ปีที่แล้ว +42

My biggest problem with Realms (and the reason my personal server with friends moved to a different host) is that you're only allowed a maximum of 5GB world uploads...
That seems reasonable, but when you're a few players exploring the world with elytras, 5GB fills up FAST.
That wouldn't be too much of an issue in and of itself (after all, the world is already on the Realms, no need to upload it) if the only way to set datapacks wasn't to download the world, set the datapacks and upload it again!
This meant that once the 5GB limit got reached, the datapacks we had on were it. No more could be added, but most importantly, the ones we had could never be updated again. If a new version of Minecraft broke one of our datapacks, too bad! No updates.

I bought and ran a realm for a few months when it was still a new-ish service. Nothing but trouble across the board; connection errors on the regular, backups not working correctly, and more effort expended on their end collecting the monthly fee than making sure the service even works as advertised. Even when the server was performing at its best, there was awful lag that made basic tasks a chore and combat impossible with only one player online. There was no logging and no console, only a reset button that didn't appear to do anything. There was a selection of custom maps you could try, most of which either didn't work right or at all. Oh, and they nagged me to download a backup of my nonfunctional realm for a full year before finally deleting it (even though I thought that's what the big trash-can-icon "Delete Realm" button did). 2/10, avoid this service.

Compare that to some guy making a smallc company hosting servers.
He and his small team were somehow avalaible 24/7 (idk he seems to never sleep lol) And upon ANY issue i found he immedietly helped, if all else failed he moved my server to a different machine wich always fixed connectibility issues, and everything else was just my fault for messing up my plugins and configs wich he still resolved without a fuss.
Beyond that he made an UI where i can either with a single click install stable pre configured packages for modded and vanilla, or gave the option to methodically build your own custom server experience using remote file access.
And it cost me less to make a stable server for TWICE the people realms could handle, and it wasn't a hard limit, the limit was the hardware i rented and i got to decide how to allocate it based on my budget and player count. if i really wanted to i could have configured it to handle up to a hundred people by installing all the performance fixing mods and plugins.

From personal experience, I think Realms is a good starting point to get your feet wet with server hosting. However, on the complexity spectrum, I think they've gone too far towards the simple extreme. I'm now at the other extreme of self-hosted with Docker on a Linux-based server. I think server hosting sites (eg. Shockbyte, MCProhosting, Apex Hosting) fall somewhere in the middle, which is not easy; being simple and user-friendly enough for most people while simultaneously offering advanced features for those that know what they're doing

Hi, past realms subscriber here. I recently ended my realms subscription for a number of reasons. Firstly, it is EXTREMELY convoluted to cancel your realms subscription, because there is no “End subscription” button, you have to first stop your server, then you will have to wait until the subscription expires. Secondly, the performance was ABYSMAL (Canadian here, your experience may be different). I regularly got 300+ ping, I would say I have fairly good internet (100+ MBPS), so my connection was not the issue (Keep in mind, this was with a SINGLE player on). This issue worsened whenever multiple friends were playing at once, to the point where it was unplayable for me and my friends. Besides connection issues, we couldn’t have multiple people flying around with elytra’s or the server would crash. I ran this realm, so me and a few friends could easily play some Minecraft together, and what we got was an unplayable mess. Thankfully, if realms didn’t have a backup feature I couldn’t get the world files, the world with 500+ hours on it and all the hard work would be lost. With the world files in hand, I searched for a new server provider and I found one (Bisect hosting). I bought a server, uploaded the files and had the same world ready to go. The server performance was a million times better, and any issues I had were solved by customer support within an hour, support was never something I could get with realms. In summary, I highly suggest that anyone currently paying for a realm STOP NOW, pay for a server that’s the same price as a realm, trust me I’m saving you a headache.

Made a wither farm which ive built before. Only worked with a player in the spawn area in the nether, a player in the overworld transportation section and back in the nether. Then thought „a chunk loader could fix this“ tried multiple ones only to find out that those are being blocked as well. Now i got a nitrado server for less, everything working as intended, fun plugins and quality of life changes. There is no reason to ever go back for me. Oh and also the server doesnt crash frequently resetting progress by 30minutes each time.

While hosting a server from an external site is "better" I feel that for a lot of people wouldn't even want to deal with server hosting themselves from these sites, It can be a lot of trouble shooting, and not to mention that you got to keep in mind that not everyone who plays minecraft nowdays are players of 2b2t or are knowledgeable of all 40,000 plugins that all fix the game in their own unique ways. Which is fine of course, but if anything the advanced players are the major minority. Many people play on console with friends, and a realm is quite litterally perfect for that, even on some pcs it can be fine for small groups, we used to do that all the time with very few issues with our crossplay friends on xbox, if you are playing bedrock then you already know what youre getting into I suppose. Also not to mention that I personally always have single issues when setting up servers that cause me to trouble shoot for over an hour to fix one like broken setting and not everyone can just do that. I feel that it would be worth complaining about if the price was like 30 a month or some shit but for simplicity sake I think the current pricing is fine, even if some random dude out there could host it for cheaper themselves. Ive also had issues with some server hosts in the past where the connection was just abysmal and you cant always get your money back from them, an average plkayer probably wouldnt even know where to begin to fix something like that and in my case there was no fix I just had to buy a new server, after trying to upgrade it of course (which didn't fix it and wasted more of my money), though shoutout shockbyte for being just the best one imo.

The most that happened was the eventual lag or delay, but that only lasted for some seconds, and the occasional disconnect like, once or twice but that's probably on my side or something like that. Everyone plays on the realm with different devices and everything, and yet nothing like that ever happened. I mean, sure, there's the customization and simplicity problem, but it's not like that isn't already a problem on Bedrock Edition, and none of us actually cared, since we just wanted a normal vanilla game.

I dont have to spend time researching which is the best server host to go with, or how much RAM its going to need, or managing any kind of server files. I boot up the game and all of the configurations are baked right into the menus, and its a button press to launch. Maybe during the earlier days it would have some lag rendering chunks or timing out, but as time went on that became less and less common. Not having mods is the biggest downside for me, but me and my friends always play vanilla anyways so, no big loss there.

I've tried a few different minecraft servers companies, especially with the idea of running a moded forge world. And it's been absolute trash, constantly being told I'm at or going above my ram limit (10gigs or more at times) because the mods they have are leaking ram and or aren't actually compatible with what there trying to run is insane. Down to a point where my family (6-8 players commonly) has to pick one of our pcs to work as the server host to try and run it instead. The simplesity of basic realms becomes a lot more appealing at that point. Most distance options are actually controlled by the user after they've logged into the realm just by going into your own in-game options. (We do this for my daughter who needs shorter render distance and lower fps) and to access the realms files you just download a backup of that realms and you'll have all the files there to go thrue, then re-upload when done. Ultimately there are some soft forge mods that can be used on realms but there mainly client style ones like map mods. Ultimately I've had more luck running the realms server on Java vs buying one from a server service, as most want to charge out the behind for a basic level of ram needed for the amount of people in my family and for a basic mod packs. Now Bedrock realms suck other then the shear amount of free marketplace content you could use from them.

    A part of Ulysses:
Stately, plump Buck Mulligan came from the stairhead, bearing a bowl of lather on which a mirror and a razor lay crossed. A yellow dressinggown, ungirdled, was sustained gently behind him on the mild morning air. He held the bowl aloft and intoned:
    -Introibo ad altare Dei.
Halted, he peered down the dark winding stairs and called out coarsely:
-Come up, Kinch! Come up, you fearful jesuit!
Solemnly he came forward and mounted the round gunrest. He faced about and blessed gravely thrice the tower, the surrounding land and the awaking mountains. Then, catching sight of Stephen Dedalus, he bent towards him and made rapid crosses in the air, gurgling in his throat and shaking his head. Stephen Dedalus, displeased and sleepy, leaned his arms on the top of the staircase and looked coldly at the shaking gurgling face that blessed him, equine in its length, and at the light untonsured hair, grained and hued like pale oak.
Buck Mulligan peeped an instant under the mirror and then covered the bowl smartly.
-Back to barracks! he said sternly.
He added in a preacher’s tone:
-For this, O dearly beloved, is the genuine Christine: body and soul and blood and ouns. Slow music, please. Shut your eyes, gents. One moment. A little trouble about those white corpuscles. Silence, all.
He peered sideways up and gave a long slow whistle of call, then paused awhile in rapt attention, his even white teeth glistening here and there with gold points. Chrysostomos. Two strong shrill whistles answered through the calm.
-Thanks, old chap, he cried briskly. That will do nicely. Switch off the current, will you?
He skipped off the gunrest and looked gravely at his watcher, gathering about his legs the loose folds of his gown. The plump shadowed face and sullen oval jowl recalled a prelate, patron of arts in the middle ages. A pleasant smile broke quietly over his lips.
-The mockery of it! he said gaily. Your absurd name, an ancient Greek!
He pointed his finger in friendly jest and went over to the parapet, laughing to himself. Stephen Dedalus stepped up, followed him wearily halfway and sat down on the edge of the gunrest, watching him still as he propped his mirror on the parapet, dipped the brush in the bowl and lathered cheeks and neck.
Buck Mulligan’s gay voice went on.
-My name is absurd too: Malachi Mulligan, two dactyls. But it has a Hellenic ring, hasn’t it? Tripping and sunny like the buck himself. We must go to Athens. Will you come if I can get the aunt to fork out twenty quid?
He laid the brush aside and, laughing with delight, cried:
-Will he come? The jejune jesuit!
Ceasing, he began to shave with care.
-Tell me, Mulligan, Stephen said quietly.
    -Yes, my love?
-How long is Haines going to stay in this tower?
Buck Mulligan showed a shaven cheek over his right shoulder.
-God, isn’t he dreadful? he said frankly. A ponderous Saxon. He thinks you’re not a gentleman. God, these bloody English! Bursting with money and indigestion. Because he comes from Oxford. You know, Dedalus, you have the real Oxford manner. He can’t make you out. O, my name for you is the best: Kinch, the knife-blade.
He shaved warily over his chin.
-He was raving all night about a black panther, Stephen said. Where is his guncase?
-A woful lunatic! Mulligan said. Were you in a funk?
-I was, Stephen said with energy and growing fear. Out here in the dark with a man I don’t know raving and moaning to himself about shooting a black panther. You saved men from drowning. I’m not a hero, however. If he stays on here I am off.
Buck Mulligan frowned at the lather on his razorblade. He hopped down from his perch and began to search his trouser pockets hastily.
    -Scutter! he cried thickly.
He came over to the gunrest and, thrusting a hand into Stephen’s upper pocket, said:
-Lend us a loan of your noserag to wipe my razor.
Stephen suffered him to pull out and hold up on show by its corner a dirty crumpled handkerchief. Buck Mulligan wiped the razorblade neatly. Then, gazing over the handkerchief, he said:
-The bard’s noserag! A new art colour for our Irish poets: snotgreen. You can almost taste it, can’t you?
He mounted to the parapet again and gazed out over Dublin bay, his fair oakpale hair stirring slightly.
-God! he said quietly. Isn’t the sea what Algy calls it: a great sweet mother? The snotgreen sea. The scrotumtightening sea. Epi oinopa ponton. Ah, Dedalus, the Greeks! I must teach you. You must read them in the original. Thalatta! Thalatta! She is our great sweet mother. Come and look.
Stephen stood up and went over to the parapet. Leaning on it he looked down on the water and on the mailboat clearing the harbourmouth of Kingstown.
-Our mighty mother! Buck Mulligan said.
He turned abruptly his grey searching eyes from the sea to Stephen’s face.
-The aunt thinks you killed your mother, he said. That’s why she won’t let me have anything to do with you.
-Someone killed her, Stephen said gloomily.
-You could have knelt down, damn it, Kinch, when your dying mother asked you, Buck Mulligan said. I’m hyperborean as much as you. But to think of your mother begging you with her last breath to kneel down and pray for her. And you refused. There is something sinister in you....
He broke off and lathered again lightly his farther cheek. A tolerant smile curled his lips.
-But a lovely mummer! he murmured to himself. Kinch, the loveliest mummer of them all!
He shaved evenly and with care, in silence, seriously.
Stephen, an elbow rested on the jagged granite, leaned his palm against his brow and gazed at the fraying edge of his shiny black coat-sleeve. Pain, that was not yet the pain of love, fretted his heart. Silently, in a dream she had come to him after her death, her wasted body within its loose brown graveclothes giving off an odour of wax and rosewood, her breath, that had bent upon him, mute, reproachful, a faint odour of wetted ashes. Across the threadbare cuffedge he saw the sea hailed as a great sweet mother by the wellfed voice beside him. The ring of bay and skyline held a dull green mass of liquid. A bowl of white china had stood beside her deathbed holding the green sluggish bile which she had torn up from her rotting liver by fits of loud groaning vomiting.
Buck Mulligan wiped again his razorblade.
-Ah, poor dogsbody! he said in a kind voice. I must give you a shirt and a few noserags. How are the secondhand breeks?
-They fit well enough, Stephen answered.
Buck Mulligan attacked the hollow beneath his underlip.
-The mockery of it, he said contentedly. Secondleg they should be. God knows what poxy bowsy left them off. I have a lovely pair with a hair stripe, grey. You’ll look spiffing in them. I’m not joking, Kinch. You look damn well when you’re dressed.
-Thanks, Stephen said. I can’t wear them if they are grey.
-He can’t wear them, Buck Mulligan told his face in the mirror. Etiquette is etiquette. He kills his mother but he can’t wear grey trousers.
He folded his razor neatly and with stroking palps of fingers felt the smooth skin.
Stephen turned his gaze from the sea and to the plump face with its smokeblue mobile eyes.
-That fellow I was with in the Ship last night, said Buck Mulligan, says you have g. p. i. He’s up in Dottyville with Connolly Norman. General paralysis of the insane!
He swept the mirror a half circle in the air to flash the tidings abroad in sunlight now radiant on the sea. His curling shaven lips laughed and the edges of his white glittering teeth. Laughter seized all his strong wellknit trunk.
-Look at yourself, he said, you dreadful bard!
Stephen bent forward and peered at the mirror held out to him, cleft by a crooked crack. Hair on end. As he and others see me. Who chose this face for me? This dogsbody to rid of vermin. It asks me too.
-I pinched it out of the skivvy’s room, Buck Mulligan said. It does her all right. The aunt always keeps plainlooking servants for Malachi. Lead him not into temptation. And her name is Ursula.
Laughing again, he brought the mirror away from Stephen’s peering eyes.
-The rage of Caliban at not seeing his face in a mirror, he said. If Wilde were only alive to see you!
Drawing back and pointing, Stephen said with bitterness:
-It is a symbol of Irish art. The cracked lookingglass of a servant.
Buck Mulligan suddenly linked his arm in Stephen’s and walked with him round the tower, his razor and mirror clacking in the pocket where he had thrust them.
-It’s not fair to tease you like that, Kinch, is it? he said kindly. God knows you have more spirit than any of them.
Parried again. He fears the lancet of my art as I fear that of his. The cold steel pen.
-Cracked lookingglass of a servant! Tell that to the oxy chap downstairs and touch him for a guinea. He’s stinking with money and thinks you’re not a gentleman. His old fellow made his tin by selling jalap to Zulus or some bloody swindle or other. God, Kinch, if you and I could only work together we might do something for the island. Hellenise it.
    Cranly’s arm. His arm.
-And to think of your having to beg from these swine. I’m the only one that knows what you are. Why don’t you trust me more? What have you up your nose against me? Is it Haines? If he makes any noise here I’ll bring down Seymour and we’ll give him a ragging worse than they gave Clive Kempthorpe.

My friend got a realm for us to play (theirs 3 of us) and when he checked his banks statements it turned out Microsoft was charging him for 3 realms instead of just one for months. This also happened to another one of our buddy’s. Realms is a scam 100%. You also get like 1/3 the render distance on realms then anywhere else and the range at which chunks load and work are DRASTICALLY smaller then normal.

Mojang has never officially supported any modifications, which includes Forge, Fabric, Bukkit and it's derivatives (Paper and etc.)
It would be quite weird for them to allow people to use those on a platform they own.

I'm currently on the free trial and I haven't had any problems with Realms. I really thought that since Mojang hosts them in the country of your choosing, the connection to Realms was perfect for everyone, hence why there is a price to pay for them, until I watched this video.

btw, "experimental" features in datapacks such as world generation, structures, custom dimensions, etc are completely disabled. this makes a sizable portion of datapacks (the only way to get relatively "modded" content onto your realm) completely nonfunctional. resource packs also need to be manually installed by everyone using your realm.

I got literally scammed by realms
Last august i bought a realms membership for bedrock edition on my xbox and i tried to upload my survival world but it kept failing and then i checked it was a bug that was reported in 1.15 and is now fixed on EVERY SINGLE DEVICE except xbox and playstation and the last update on it was a couple of months ago and i guess they won’t try to fix it at this point since they don’t care about consoles anyway

I am a fairly dictated Minecraft player, but I still use realms, because of the simplicity, last year I swapped my world from Bedrock to Java, the amount of issues Bedrock had from simply trying to download a world file, I had half my world corrupted.

    Pre Watch comment here:
    (Minecraft on a Phone)
Based on what the comment section is like, this is probably going to be about the crapiness of Realms.
My friend's realm seems to have this odd time range where you can guarentee you won't get kicked, then your chances of getting kicked exponetially increase when out. Really odd and is not a internet problem on my end, so something is going on behind the scenes

I will give a note for realms, to play games with friends around the world, I have found realms servers to be more more stable then other server hosts. Playing Minecraft in Australia with a friend in America and another friend in Europe, and we all have pretty good ping is something i find very nice, when compared to some friend servers ive played on by 3rd party hosters which I've always had the worst ping from being in Australia
