Dunno why people get so annoyed with a 3-party coalition.
This is what democracy looks like, we’re shifting away from a 2-party system and smaller parties are getting votes, diversifying our government and its policy, creating more discussion and points of view. Everyone complained about the 2-party system until their own party didn’t make it in lol

@@MatuaKiwi because the declaration itself declares the impossible and achieves nothing. It’s not possible for indigenous peoples to “maintain and develop their political, economic and social systems” as current all of those aren’t Māori, they’re all just a part of New Zealand, all citizens use the same political, economic and social systems. And if they wanted separate governance, they’d essentially need to be a different state, which is damn near segregation, and thats not a good thing.
And they may engage freely in their own economic activities and traditions… all of which they’re allowed to do anyway.
The declaration also touches on some other issues like land rights etc, but that gets very messy as the declaration says that indigenous people have a right to their land, but doesn’t specify where the line is drawn. Could a Māori person just walk up to anyones farm and start building there? No, because the law doesn’t allow it, but then we aren’t sticking to the declarations murky distinctions and definitions, with our own laws.
We live in a modern society where everyone contributes their tax dollars, and votes on a government in regards to policy and how that money is spent. Māori people have the same say as the rest of us.
It’s a very difficult discussion to have at the best of times, because the population is very split on the claim to the land, and much of the Māori claim is very spiritual, but nowadays we’re a secular state, and can’t make decisions based on beliefs, but what’s best for everyone as a whole. And even at the best of times, governments suck at that.
