After 40 years with Labour, Corbyn is taking them on | Jeremy Corbyn | The Big Picture S4E14

  • Jeremy Corbyn was the Labour MP for North Islington for 40 years - his entire political career.
    But not anymore.
Now, he’s campaigning against his former party, trying to convince his lifelong voters to abandon the party that abandoned him.
After he was suspended from the Labour Party by his former shadow minister Keir Starmer, Corbyn chose to stand as an independent, and feels like he no longer recognises the party that shaped him.
This week on The Big Picture Podcast, we go on the road to North Islington, where we joined Corbyn on the campaign trail to talk about the challenges of going out on his own, how Gaza changed British politics and his thoughts on what kind of leader Starmer would make.

Why oh why is JC not our PM? When he became leader of the Labour party, I voted for the first time in my life at the age of 52! Because...... Only for the first time in my adult life, did I feel that we finally had a true, honest man with all the right ingredients to be at the helm. Of course, he was too much of a threat to 'The Establishment ', those pompous white imperialist gits in suits, who are dragging our country into the gutters of poverty in every aspect of the word. As always, we are in a David and Goliath situation but I still believe in miracles. Look at Julian Assange....Free against all odds. ❤️🙏🕊️🌍❤️🇵🇸⚖️

      Come on. 😂
A good person in a toxic environment cannot always do too much.
They don't trust that and demographics shaping. Sane sort of stuff that needs working out.
Poverty causes brain fog and they still got that memo
Up the workers. The actual workers not the dynasty

    • @davidlamb7524

His defense of Islam directly after a terror attack though well- intentioned (as I believe Jeremy always is) did not go down well with most of the working class. Then apologizing to Zionists lost him another block of votes. All his mistakes were really caused by his kindness, inclusivity and generosity of spirit. Many see this as weakness.
He is actually very far from weak. Just too generous.
He allowed the treacherous Blairites to remain. He should have booted them out. His 'woke' supporters may also not be helpful to his cause with the majority of working class. Many are disturbed by some of the 'trans' issues like sports and women's spaces.
If he concentrates more on domestic issues that affect much of the public directly ie poverty, housing, the NHS, employment rights and minimum wage etc he may yet regain his original support. I wish him well. I hope he has learned a lot in the past few years.
Now he is out from under the yolk of Labour he may flourish.
I think he would be better for the country than any of the other contenders.

In my country we have recently seen a similar case of political assassination of a leftist (not my favourite, in any case) in which the right, a good part of the left and the media have come together. But don't worry. Social democracy in the United Kingdom is over, as everywhere else. The opportunistic turn to the political centre, the assumption of the neoliberal agenda or participation as a crutch in "grand coalitions" have been the previous step to the electoral harakiri, or collapse, of social democracy throughout Europe, because not only have they failed to attract liberal or conservative voters, but they have lost their left-wing ones in successive and painful electoral bleedings, part of whom don't vote now and another part vote for the populist right. The momentum of Blatcherism 2.0 and Starmer is only due to the fourteen years of conservative oligophrenia: basically Starmer is a mere pilot who fills the vacuum taking the controls of the same machine ‐ the sixth Tory prime minister under other acronyms. But in four years, or eight, Labour is history as a relevant political force. As it already is in France, the Netherlands, Austria, Greece, and almost all of Eastern Europe, and soon in Germany.

you'd very quickly see your conservatives side with your liberals, and with the entire media apparatus of your state (including comedy shows, petrol head shows, etc) close ranks and declare your candidate, and anyone who likes them, as a dangerous cult, which has to be stopped before they bring tOtAl eConOmIc cHaOs. That either ruling party increasingly makes life unaffordable for everyone that works, crashes the economy, crashes it again, and again, is irrelevant. YOU will be the threat, and 90% of the people you speak with will agree, spouting off talking points in any conversation. You'll find the country offered a bipolar issue that gives everyone a cause to split for or against, and your candidate will be demanded to occupy one side, then the other; that the ruling party adopts both sides at the same time won't be made an issue, if your candidate moves in any direction or any mix of policies to speak to both audiences, won't matter; Chaos. Traitor. Barmy. Bad. Extreme!
You'll endure 5 years of hard cringe as you watch the last chance to save your future poured down the drain in front of your eyes, and most people you'll meet will agree vociferously with whatever media they consume, that you and your like are the 'great threat', and they can't stomach even the thought of it, not for even 30 seconds, "No, I just, I just can't imagine..". They'll complain about what they bring in instead, but they'll stomach it, because the media isn't telling them it's making the sky falling down. They'll endure increased authority, increased rent, increased mortgages, further shrink in wages, more questionable arms deals, less investment, less services, all of that - but your guy? They can't even bear the thought of it, that's extremism!

The following is a true and accurate story about Jeremy Corbyn. He was at the Julian Assange hearing with us on May 20th. When it was finishing, he was with his assistant, and a lady who was obviously distressed approached him. There were NO cameras, so this wasn't a photo opportunity for him. She was one of his constituents, and he took out his notebook with pen and chatted with her for about 10 minutes, diligently taking notes. The lady was distraught, but JC was sympathetic, listened, and promised to follow up. Never been a huge Jeremy Corbyn fan and disagree with him on some issues, but watching this first-hand totally blew me away!

What voter ever demanded the Government commit to a Memorandum of Understanding between Britain and the apartheid state of Israel? Most voters don't know about it and it wasn't part of the 2019 Tory Manifesto pledges, so why was it implemented? Was it purely for the benefit of arms manufacturers and the personal financial benefit of politicians and other interests. How much has assisting the genocide and ethnic cleansing in Gaza cost taxpayers in Britain? We all need to know.
