Charter schools are basically, just no union schools. A good idea.
I hope it succeeds as our schools are failing our kids by any metric you want to use. I'm old enough to remember when like-minded countries used to send people to NZ to find out how we got such stellar results for so little money in both education and health . Boy, that doesn't happen anymore .Now, the only thing worth studying would be how we so throughly stuffed it up. Quick answer, politicians and unions.
Charter Schools great idea it means choice like NOT burdening children with race based lessons or wasting time on subjects that they dont need to know which is a virtue we cannot afford to be without.
They work exceptionally well for Maori run initiatives. Oh whoops that’s race based and ideological. No complaints from you then aye.

Michael Laws.... Could you help me understand what a charter school is? ... I thought NZ already had them... Isn't a Kura Kaupapa a Charter school?

Charter schools are just private schools that operate with public money. Same funding public schools would get.
Basically it means even poor people can get the benefits of private schools.
If the charter schools aren’t that good; then students will leave and they will lose funding and then close.
As a country, we can’t lose. If the charter schools suck, they will be closed.

State schools operate on stolen private sector taxpayer money....that's why they suck. Charters allow the return of that money to the private sector to be far better used .

Public schools should not be taxpayer funded. If you choose to have kids, then you pay for the cost of having them including their education. These are also usually the same people who do not oay much tax but have a huge drain on government funds. All teachers should be paid on merit and the results of their students - this shows the capability of the teacher

Over simplified again David - the Olympics are not Have a Go Day. They’re for the best in their sport. Raygun hijacked the selection process and denied those more talented of opportunity.
The Olympics is a farce. From the last supper outrage, the XY’s beating the XX’s in women’s boxing, silly breakdancing and Russia excluded because of a war started by the CIA. All credibility is disappearing. Add on the blatant corruption that’s gone on for years amongst the bidding delegates. It’s a joke.
And Albanese also subscribes to the ‘give it a go’ theory. Whatever is wrong with striving for excellence, something NZ public schools seem to have abandoned.

Yes, lets just emulate one of the worst education systems in the developed world. America. Why do Europeans never want to emulate the better education systems Asian countries have? These countries are top of the PISA league table. It is like a football manager trying to copy Doncaster Rovers style of play rather than Man City.
