Just completed first real trip towing my fifth wheel Grand Design 337 RLS. Trailer loaded is 11,500#. Truck is 2018 Ram 3500, 4:10 rear, 6.4l Hemi, 4 x 4, 8' bed, 6sp. I held between 65 and 70 mph and stayed between 2500 and 3000 rpm. Truck tows surprisingly well. I had a Cummins 2500 before and am very pleased with the performance of the Hemi.
just built a 2022 on ram website, off road pkg, tow pkg, level 2 pkg it’s now over 60k!
For me, towing just under 10,000 lbs, the 2500 with the 6.4 Hemi is the way to go. Diesel will give more power & mpg boost, but I won't miss the DEF, more expensive oil changes, fuel filters, and most importantly, loss in payload! Nice truck.

We picked up a new 2020 2500 Tradesman back in May (2020). I dumped the stock tires for a set of Falken Wildpeaks A/T3W All-Terrains as the stock tires weren't cutting it for our winters here in Northern NY. Wife and I took a trip from NY to Calif and back in March 2021. Picked up a rental RV trailer in Utah to tow around UT/NV/CA. Truck handled nicely in the snows of Northern Calif, as well as the sand and salt flats of the southern Mojave. Highest rev's were climbing up the hills oh Hwy 395 around Mammoth Mtn Resort, and a stretch of I-15 that cuts through the NW corner of Arizona trying to maintain speed. Only thing I wish Ram would do, include the center cargo high mount camera with the towing prep group. Seems silly to have the truck all setup to mount either a 5th wheel or gooseneck hitch and wiring harness hookups (both 4 & 7 pin in the bed), and not have the cargo camera included in the prep. Truck does have a lot of getup and go. It will fishtail because the rear is very light. Traction control and limited slip will cause it to do burnouts at intersections that require sharp turns followed by quick acceleration.
Nice review, I have a 2018 RAM 3500 Laramie with the 6.4 Hemi and 4.10 gears. Towing capacity of 15600 and 3750 payload. I love it! I have towed a 16 foot dump trailer loaded down with split firewood and it towed it with ease.

Yeah, I ordered it that way. The dealer said they had so many people trying to buy it before I got down to get it. It is the same color as the one you tested, except I ordered it with the sport package. So it has 20 inch black wheels and everything is blacked out. I hate chrome.

How does that 3500 ride unloaded without a trailer and what kind if fuel mileage? I am also looking to order my next truck from a 1500. I notice a minimal difference in price between the 2500 and 3500 base price. I'm seriously considering the 3500 4x4 over the 2500 at this point.
@@michaelconnolly6519 It rides good for a 3500. Lol It doesn't ride like a Cadillac, but on the highway it is smooth. However, if you hit a bump it will let you know it. As for gas mileage, on the highway not towing or hauling. I get 17 to 18 mpg. I towed my dump trailer (total weight 9000 lbs) and I was getting 12 mpg.
I’m a Ford guy and also have been but Ford must think all their customers make six figure salaries. I really want and F250 with that 7.3 gas but man Ford is proud of those and you get way more truck with Dodge for the price.

If i were to get a diesel it would be in an f450/ram 4500. The dual rear wheels, wide track front axle, commercial wheels, and commercial tires all bring out what a diesel is going to be meant for

I just bought the 2020 3500 4x4 with the HO Cummins. Interior is bare bone but wow what a fun truck to drive. I traded in a 2014 Laramie 3500 4x4. The 2014 was all luxury and with ok power, the 2020 is all power with very little luxury at MSRP $57,257 but I paid less than that on July 29th. Some dealerships are hurting and it’s at the end of the year with 2021 stock coming in late August and September.
From what I see the 6.4 gets 12-13 mpg. I got that with my 2001 5.9 gasser
Just bought 2020 Cummins engine w/Ram box. In the 6 months since owning, the truck is a beast & has paid for itself towing a dump trailer and excavator 14k+ lbs. Love the interior vs Ford F-250 xlt, backup camera great for trailers. Cons goes through DEF fluid every 1200 miles, Ram box is janky, the bed is tough to get in an out of, sometimes when shift in park the “p” mode blinks and you have reshift into park?? The child window locks don’t work, annoying if you have little ones. Ultimately, the pros outweigh the cons and gets the job done! 4wd has saved me quite a few occasions working in mud and in the mountains.
Love the power wagons , but need to tow with it. I will be getting something like this.
I’d be all over this. Way more options than the Chevrolet 2500 HD Custom.
Plus the interior makes it feel worth the price. The Chevy interior makes me feel like I’m paying too much for the truck

great review, I highly recommend this truck, I have the 2019 big horn version, same engine and 3.73 rear. It pulls great, on flat ground from a stand still I don't notice my trailer is back there until about 30 Mph.

@@JB_WhoWork the Reflection 290BH 8-10K LBs, so not too much. But I like my vehicle to be a little overkill for safety.
I know this is an older video to comment on but it's sad to see that only 2 years ago for the 2020 the chrome appearance group gave you ghe LED fog lamps and the towing tech package gave you the LED head lights and tail lights but now both those packages which cost more don't come with those options. I hate what manufacturers are doing. Not to mention the starting price is 10k more.

I Loved you’re video and how well spoken you were. Most people who have reviewed this truck they kinda just down talk the tradesman. But the thing is most people just don’t need the king ranch or a larmine pickup. Folks need to quit trying compete with there neighbors and stuff💯💯

That would be perfect for me for towing my 22’ trailer, but, they force me to go to a bighorn because you can’t get a simple power seat! I have back issues and need the extra adjustments.
Lots of power in the Hemi, even the 5.7 in previous Heavy Duty trucks was strong enough for the 2500 if it was used for towing under 12,000 lbs. You forgot about that thing about sharing remember!
I never had a chance to drive the 5.7 but it has guts in the 1/2 tons. Refresh my memory lol!

I went with a Ford super duty STX CCLB over Chevy and Ram. The full rear bench with the support underneath in the ram was a non starter. The dial shifter and push button start were another turn off. Each of the big three have their advantages but I felt the Ford was the best overall value for my needs. I especially love the huge 48 gallon fuel tank.
43 gallons? You know how much weight that is with a full tank right?
@Maybe if gasoline weighs 6.3 lbs per gallon and the fuel tank holds 48 gallons that would be 302.4 lbs. How is that a problem? That weight doesn’t come out of the payload and the fuel tank has baffles to keep the fuel from sloshing around. I’m trying to understand what you are getting at.

I don’t worry about fuel economy, that’s why I have a Corolla. This truck gets a solid 12 MPG regardless of how I drive it. Towing the boat the mileage is the same. It drops to 9 MPG with a 35’ TT but no matter how soft I drive in my area it is always 12 on average. I got 14 once driving in Florida for a week where everything is flat but that was the only time my mileage improved. The extra fuel has zero bearing on the fuel economy, any more than some payload or passengers would. In fact, the big tank is awesome when towing because I don’t have to stop for fuel very often with a big trailer hooked up.

Man, I’m not a Ram guy but it’s hard not think this the best truck to get in 2021. I was looking at a Tundra but it’s SO outdated. And the Chevy is lack luster and idk about the 6.6L yet. It’s too new for me to try it. And I won’t do another ford. Lol. But even the base tradesman for 2021 is really nice. Especially if you can get it with that infotainment upgrade. I think a Ram Tradesman 2500 6.4 is in my future. Just gotta sell the wife first. Lol

You can get a leveling kit and just put some 33s on there and it would look really good like that. I like that color for the tradesman typically your work trucks are all white and have been in the past. It's good to see they're finally coming around with different colors for that plain truck.
Has 33s on from factory, with a level you can run 35s or 37s

This was a 19, I think I pulled the keys thinking it was a 2020 based off of where it was located
The one thing I wish they would put in a 2500 is the platform under the rear seat that folds out and makes a big flat surface in the back. I use that a lot in my 1500 and I will miss that when I get a 2500.
You can still get it, just move up to a Big Horn.

You may regret not getting it honestly. I prefer the shorter bed but at times would like the extra space especially if you plan on towing a fifth wheel or gooseneck trailer

Great looking truck. I wish ram would do something different with the tow mirrors. Seems like if they are in the “normal” position they aren’t great. That’s why so many people drive around with them flipped up towing imaginary trailers. Lol.

Bought the 2020 2500 but didnt have the 8.4 inch screen. Was gonna cost a lot but I guess will have to do after market. Dont know why they put the small screens in instead of the nicer ones. I asked the dealer but they wouldnt budge on the cost.

I think this is the exact set up I want. Will be getting an 11,200 GVWR Grand Design Reflection 315 RLTS next year, so probably the 2021 Tradesman with the same package. Hopefully it will still be under 50k MSRP. What's your feeling on suspension kits like Timbren?
I don’t have any experience unfortunately but Timbren bags are some of the best on the market however they are $$$

The blind spot monitoring system is good until you want to put a flatbed on your truck. Error messages for days. Ram needs to extend a hand to aftermarket outfitters so all this technology, cameras, blind spot sensors, and the like work on the utility and tradesman bodies that so many people require on their pick-ups. The big three make it impossible to retrofit these things onto a customized truck. Not everyone can use the factory bed.

This is correct I think when I did this review I pulled keys to a 2019 instead of a 2020. I’m not sure why they discontinued the LED light package on the Tradesman but still available on Big Horn. Thanks for catching this 👍🏾

That’s tough! You can’t go wrong with either but that 7.3L has me intrigued. I would like to see in 3 years how well they hold up with the new 10 speed. If I were choosing, I would probably wait to see what Ford does with the redesign but that’s only because The interior looks dated compared to the RAM.
The mechanical 4wd shifter is the way to go the electronic ones do nothing

Thanks for the review. Looking at a 2500 for next year. I'm looking at Grand Design 295RL fifth wheel that is 9-10k pounds and 1400 payload. The 2500 diesel payload could be only 1800 if you get a loaded up model and add people/stuff and you could be over. The Hemi saves you $10k and gains you 1,000 pounds of payload. So do you buy payload or torque?
The Grand Design is a great brand and their smaller fifth wheels are awesome! I would get payload over TQ any day and if you want both, go 1 ton! Great Question 👍🏾

8 speed trans is far superior to the crappy problematic 68re. I have no issue with the dial it cleans up the inside look of the truck.
