      Relative to today she is. Psychotic murder aside, imagine if movies had female characters half as good as Catherine Trammel.

    I dont care what any of these blind and stupid critics have to say. They completely missed the point of Basic Instinct. This movie is one of the greatest film noir who-done-it mysteries ever put on film. Its unique, exciting, seductive, smart, and creepy af. The characters of Catherine Tramell and Nick Curran are brilliantly written and played by Stone and Douglas.
    "She is evil and devine." That perfectly describes the femme fatales in the old film noir classics. Think of Barbara Stanwyck in a lot of movies.

    Catherine Trammell always struck me as a female Hannibal Lector not in terms of devouring flesh but devouring people sensually .
    In Basic Instinct, you can see how she demonstrates her intelligence as well as power over people.
    The police interrogation scene with Douglas a n d Stone is like Clarice Starling talking to Lektor in his cell.

    Basically It Stinks In the 1990s my family used Siskel and Egert as reverse barometers and I forget which year sometime around 98 we just stopped caring about award shows when nothing any of our very different interests won. It was always about "actor movies". 9:20 You call that cheesy? Probably think it's unrealistic? That's how my Dad drives on mountain roads and i'ts made my friends queezy lol.

    The theory in the video that Douglas' character is a man on the edge trying to rebuild his life but his flaws are used against him does have some support in the visual homages to Vertigo found in the film.

    One of the biggest problems these days is that studios have all these DEI rules about including minorities, but they aren't allowed to be depicted in any negative way, which both stifles creative freedom and produces predictable boring stories. People are people, no matter their sex, race, sexual affiliations or whatever, there are both good and bad people. It's completely unrealistic that a bisexual woman, such as portrayed in Basic Instinct, is incapable of murder, and the protestors at the time are taking a single character in a movie and saying that it's generalising about bisexual people which it is not. It's simply saying that THIS particular bisexual woman IS capable of murder.

    I could see Great Scacchi in the Catherine Tremmel role, but she'd only just played an evil character in Presumed Innocent. Strangely she never really got any big roles after that.

    Stone was right about her career status at the time. Basic Instinct was probably the last chance she had at a lead role.
    She had some pretty good roles in Irreconcilable Differences and Total Recall as well as a decent part on Magnum PI but at best was a supporting/ character actress.
    Basic Instinct- controversial as it was- proved to be an ideal part for Sharon Stone absent the police interrogation scene.
    Stone is a very intelligent woman with a high IQ who was a very good student when she was younger. The role was a perfect structure for her funnel her intelligence into.

    This movie rocks so hard. I view Stone's character as a sympathetic villain. She's no more corrupt than the cops who kill with impunity, and who also make the mistake of thinking they are smarter than her. Douglas' character is pathetic, but in a way I felt was compelling to men (myself included) who feel threatened by someone more powerful than them, and part of that emotion translates into an intense physical and mental desire to be loved by that person, or at least be desired in return.
    Really interested to see what kinds of theories you will cover in upcoming videos.
    Oh and the soundtrack to this film! Brilliantly chosen. The music in the nightclub scene is a banger.

    • @RepresentThis
      @RepresentThis  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Well, it took me about 15 uploads to get part 2 past copyright most likely due to the sexual content of the film. Even pictures were copyrighted. I had score but then I cut it all out. With this in mind I don't think I would have the patience to deal with Showgirls. Also, I was never pationate about that film and thus I believe I would do a disservice to breaking down that film. I love Verhoven's Robocop, Total Recall and Starship (which I will cover all of these someday) because of the layers, style and vision, but Showgirls never became something I fell in love with.
