I agree. I felt like she was perfect for this role. I don’t think this role called for someone younger and prettier. All I kept thinking was that Alex had been kind of an awkward slight ugly duckling growing up. That no one saw her, not even her parents, so this caused her borderline tendencies. Then she grew up, had her glow up, but because of her personality disorder, she couldn’t attach properly to any man to have a marriage and family. Now she’s cruising towards middle age and the stakes were getting higher.

As crazy as Alex is, the way Glenn portrayed her makes me have just a little bit of sympathy for her. Alex is a very sick, sad woman who seriously needs mental help. Glenn gave Alex a humanity that made her kinda pitiful and tragic as well as scary. And that really makes the movie better. Such a fantastic performance.

    • @paulvoorhies8821
      @paulvoorhies8821 ปีที่แล้ว +45

Close has said in many interviews that she had a lot of sympathy for Alex the character because she was mentally ill. She thoroughly researched borderline personality disorder with psychiatrists. That’s why she didn’t like the ending of the film. In keeping with her character, she would be infinitely more likely to harm/Jill herself than anyone else. She fought for the originally scripted ending-hard-as it didn’t go over well with test audiences or the producers. I think this is honestly the best female performance to never win an Oscar.

The new ending made Alex almost like a slasher villain and that kinda cheapened it. Typical crazy lady with a knife attacking people. The original ending is devastating. Alex's sick obsession caused her to take her own life and ruin Dan's in the process. His family will suffer for a long time because of his choices. He was innocent as far as being framed for Alex's death. But the rest? He chose to cheat and the consequences were devastating.

This film was perfectly cast, GC captured the character's nuances perfectly. MD was such a charismatic and watchable bad boy. Affairs are not about beauty, are about availability, secrets/lies, and naughtiness, and besides, GC looked fab here. Affair-girls are usually average if not plain. Beautiful women don't need to resort to being some man's side-chick, they already get many offers for the real deal.
This was a woman who had been been hurt/used before, not about to get tossed aside this time around. Got the feeling this character was playing out a personal revenge against previous men who'd scorned her.

@@87scally IIRC in the original she dies by suicide. The studio thought it made her too sympathetic. They wanted her to be a villain not a tragic figure.

The constant smiling or smirking and eye contact she has here is a big red flag. You can tell she has some sort of mental problems and at the very least attachment/abandonment issues. You can tell right off she's going to be a problem.

no it's jjust called flirting. your generation didn't grow up with much contact outside of the internet even as adults so you don't recognize flirting the way we used to do it (gen x and boomers)

    “I’m discreet.”
    Calls wife
    Boils rabbit
    Breaks into family home
Not the Oxford definition, but yeah .... kinda discreet

Pretty goddam good a movie, especially considering it was made in 1987. One minute you're in love with Alex and the next you despise her. Awesome performances by all the actors

Several actresses were considered for the leading role of Alex Forrest in “Fatal Attraction.”
Among them, DEMI MOORE, who was soon turned down for being too young. Born in 1962, she was in her twenties when the film was shot.
ANNIE POTTS was offered to be Alex Forrest, but she dismissed it. Born in 1952, she was in her thirties when the picture was made.
One favorite contender, BARBARA HERSHEY came close to personate Alex Forrest and was willing to, but - to her chagrin - she was unavailable. Born in 1948, she was in her late thirties at the time.
In the end, as we all know, GLENN CLOSE was cast as Alex Forrest, despite not being a credible prospect at first in the eyes of reluctant producers : they did not believe she was “sexual enough”❗️ She was ultimately granted an audition, proved those skeptical minds wrong*… and the rest is history❕ A CLOSE CALL (pun intended)❗️
Born in 1947, Miss Close was about 40 years old in 1987. In the movie, Alex’s age is mentioned a couple of times : 36-odd years old. For instance, based on unused opera tickets (Giacomo Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly”), we see that it is 1986, putting Alex’s birth year at 1950.
Thanks to ONE OUTSTANDINGLY GIFTED FEMALE PERFORMER, “Fatal Attraction” has become a cult classic, better yet a genuine cinematographic and cultural phenomenon‼️ 💎🎬💎
    * She made the ever so complex key-personage her own : one Alex Forrest who could not possibly be “ignored” by pic fans❕

This movie breaks my heart for the wife because she's absolutely adorable. He cheats on her so easily like it was nothing, without any stress. Total disregard for his wife or getting caught. I would've dumped him so fast. All he wanted was to get his rocks off while recklessly handling the fate of his family.. it's truly evil.
