Once per battle (Unit) Where can I pick up my paycheck gw? My biggest pet peeve are some units that have the abilities that will like add a damage on the charge or against certain units instead of using the keywords like Charge(+1 damage), especially when they are already on the warscroll like exalted hero of chaos
if it isn't on a warscroll or doesn't tell you a unit uses the ability, then it is a player ability. players and units are treated the same by the game. so, you just have to figure out if it's a player or unit ability and thats who the restriction is on. players use an specific ability once per phase unless otherwise stated just like units. the DoK command is a unit ability because it tells you a unit is using it. It's a command so you can only do it once per combat phase. the once per battle restriction then applies to the unit, meaning you can use this command once per unit per battle so you can't spam it on the same blender. The waagh ability is a player ability because it tells you to pick a target (so you are the one using the ability), so the Once Per Battle restriction applies to the player. The sidebar on that rules' page is helpful. It's awkward because it's written differently than we're used to, but it's a lot cleaner and doesn't require copypasted paragraphs of nuanced restrictions.
What about nighthaunt wave of terror? It's once per turn (army) and says friendly nighthaunt units can charge while in combat. Is that all nighthaunt units can charge while in combat or one unit can charge while in combat? The App doesn't show it picking a target
If I take the example of the All Out Slaughter from DoK faction abilities, it would mean we can use it once per combat phase, each time on a different unit? If that is correct, why is the wording different from the "Their Finest Hour" ability from Stormcast Eternals, which says once per turn but each time you have to pick a different unit?
@KisifrothSippik Because All Out Slaughter is a command you can't use it more than once per phase and it's once per unit. Since Finest Hour isn't a command they have to be specify that you can't use it on the same unit next turn.
@@CreatorGatorYT ok, but they could have said : " Any Combat Phase Declare: Pick a Friendly Daughter of Khaine Infantry unit that is in combat and has not used this ability this battle to use this ability. Effect: that unit can use 2 Fight abilities this phase. After the first is used, this unit has STrike Last of the rest of the turn"
How would it interact with replacement units? If the original unit used the ability, could they use it again? Also I have to say that the rule is terrible and extremely strange, especially with them saying that the edition is better written and that everything is clear
@miguelgilcasas3560 On the side of the page next to 24.2 it says that replacement units can use their once per battle abilities because they're new units.
so if the daughters of khaine use all out slaughter surely its still a limit of one use per turn as its a command? if thats the case do you need to keep track of what units have used all out slaughter because its once per battle per unit? i personally feel that once per battle means you can only use that command once in the battle. since its a command you can only use it once and it specifies to only pick one unit? i find it more confusing theres so much debate about this, once per battle to me means you can only use that once..
yea you're right. any unit can use the command once per battle. you can't use the same command twice in a phase unless otherwise stated. the Once Per Battle part is to make sure you don't buff the same unit every single time.
@NapGod I feel like it's so much additional complication. Like you'll basically need to leave some form of token per unit in a DOK army 😅 I wonder if this is the only example in all the battle tomes of this type of interaction.
I'd like to know your position on this, mate: if I read ONCE PER TURN (ARMY), ANY COMBAT PHASE - I can use that ability twice in the same battle round?!? (first time in my turn and second time in the opponent's turn?)
I'm currently looking for a rule that would say you couldn't, but from what I'm seeing it looks like your could pick each unit to use the ability all in one phase. If it was the DoK command then no because you can't use the same command twice in a phase but here I think your whole Spearhead force could teleport at once.
I don't think that many people will understand "once per battle" wrong...I mean...it is once per battle...how could someone say "ok, this actually means 4 times per battle, because I have that amount of unit x"
I don't even think it's an issue about confusing between "unit" or "player". I think you have a problem with understanding the word "Pick". As far as I understand "pick", it means to CHOOSE one unit among all of your units present on the battlefield to be the target of said ability, be it once per battle, turn, phase, etc. When an ability says "Pick a unit", it is not implying that you can have that ability be executed once by every single unit in your army, but that you need to choose one of the units present to be the target of said ability, and it can only be done once per turn, round, battle (game), whatever.
Commenting for the algorythms sake; This video is fucking amazing, short, very informative way of edeting, and actually adressing a rules quirk worth adressing, I love it!
It is because they chose different way to say the same thing making it work on different levels. They could have just pick a simpler homogenous wording.
So glad I didn't get into AoS. Only wish I had waited until it came out before I re-based my entire army onto round bases so I didn't have to re-base them back onto square :(
You're not crazy, this is indeed how it works
Thanks!
This video was awsome! Did I expect the guys from the Stormkeep to comment down here? No? Was it cool either way? Yes!
As confirmed by the other comments, this is how it works. It’s essentially GW telling you to not spam the same unit/hero and use some variety.
Bro calm down and breathe

Once per battle , as in once and done is what i assumed .
can't believe 0.75 speed makes you speak like a normal person
Really well explained. Thank you!
Making the player use abilities like they are a model in the game
@@settratheimperishable7800 I wonder if I was made out of GW plastic how much would I cost
I agree, very confusing. I had a similar confusion over Heavens Sent in Stormcast Eternals
I had to slow it down .75
Yup. Stressful to try and follow otherwise.

@@itsbaffle1950 Yep, Once Per Turn (Army) means you can select 1 unit to do that ability per turn across your whole army

Like what Rob the Honest Wargamer says, “any” can be changed to “every.” So it can be used in “every” combat phase.
To clarify, can you declare Hand of Gork multiple times in a single phase as long as you are picking different friendly units?
