    For those of you doing Steve's Video Ficht Fix. You will need to shop at the Auto store or online. Hardware stores only stock 3/8 and 1/4" fittings usually.
    You will need:
    1 x 5/16" T - spliced in with a piece of hose to the top inlet of the fuel vapor evaporator.
    1 x 5/16 joiner/splicer barb fitting (unless you want to fit a new longer hose from down below)
    1 x 3/8" T - spliced from your fuel vapor evaporator (as a note the return 5/16" hose will be pushed onto this T; so maybe some boiling water and some grease will help you get it on).
    1 x 5/16" x 2' ft of Gates water/heater hose.
    Zip Ties. about 13-15 should be enough.
    A smear of grease to push on your hoses.
    It's an easy job and I'm looking forward to testing it this summer.
    Good Luck!

      Tim, thanks for this list. A quick question. Which line is 3/8? The line with the hot water exiting the boat?

    2:52 Just completed the fix to our evinrude 90hp. Did the reroute, and our main line was plugged solid just below the fuel evaporator. We had NO water getting to EMM. All cleared out now, good cooling to unit and running great. Thank you for fix as we have had the same problem every year.

    I got a 2001 115hp ficht, it has been a great motor , 17 years and I haven't put any money in it, just spark plugs.

    Thanks so much for the post. I have a 225 hp that runs great and I really like the motor. It will run for 30-40 min, then shut down. After the motor cools down for an 1 hour it will start up and run again. I think its a cooling issue. The dealer can't fix the problem, so I will try this solution before giving up and buying a new motor.

    Hi, it's a very nice video, but I've not completely understood. You've excluded the vapor separator forever or you open the by-pass only when the EMM is too hot?
    In other words, have you installed a tap in the by-pass?

    • @RuthlessK9
      @RuthlessK9  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Giuseppe Calvarese, my apologies for the delayed response, your message was sent two years ago. In the event you are still curious, I cleaned the vapor separator before doing the bypass and again at the time I created the bypass. The water passage going into the separator is so small that any sediment or sand picked up quickly clogged the passage. Once I realized that the vapor separator wasn’t being cooled and the boat ran fine, I tapped into the inlet hose to make the bypass. If water made it into the canister, fine, if not, the bypass would allow water to still cool the EMM.

    Looking at a boat with a 2000 150 ram ficht, other then getting a mechanic to check it out and pull EMM data is there anything I should look for?

    • @RuthlessK9
      @RuthlessK9  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Marko, I would definitely have someone pull the EMM data and also be sure to check the compression across each cylinder. Both of those are simple enough and only take a couple minutes. I don’t remember what the compression is supposed to be on those motors but you should be able to find out pretty easy online; compression should be about the same across all cylinders. Only other thing I would recommend would be to water test the boat. When these motors have problems, whether EMM or other related, they will often times start and run without issue on the water hose but when you get the motor under load when out on the water, the EMM trips the horn and sends it into fail safe. A 15 - 20 min boat ride should reveal any serious issues. Good luck, I hope it works out for you.

    I have been having some issues with my 2002 175 and the check engine light. I have a drop in volume and water when running through both the Fuel v separator and emm. I had a clog in the fuel vapor separator and cleared it out and also let some salt away sit in the coil for an hour. both the emm and fuel v sep seem clear but when i compare the water from the source hose verse out the emm return there is a significant drop in both volume and pressure. It runs much better but at long slow RPMs after cruising still getting the light. Any thoughts? also seems to be alot of water leaking out between the lower unit seam where the water pump sits when running on muffs. Is this normal. No one wants to work on these motors anymore and I've had better luck fixing things myself lately

  • @3babyghost

    can you help me figure out what's wrong with my motor, 2 days age it started throwing check engine and idling ruff and hard to get it to start so I changed both water fuel separator filters replaced the in line primer bulb and spark plugs with oem plugs. Checked for leaks and found no leaks started it up she runs beautiful better than ever so I took off to the fishing hole and 10 minute drive then 10 minutes troll through no wake then dropped anchore and fished 30 minutes later tried to move to a new spot and it wont start cranks for awhile tries but wont start checked for leaks no leaks, used my trolling motor to head to the slip then right before I got to the slip I held in choke and kept trying finally after about 7 attempts it fired up with a bug cloud of smoke and after 30 seconds ran great again. Any idea???

    Great vid, thanks. Curious if the tiny mesh filter in the bottom outlet of your VST was clogged? Or was your VST clogged in another way?

    • @RuthlessK9
      @RuthlessK9  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Turned out that my VST was clogged throughout. I cleaned it out somewhat but it clogged up again within 6 months. I haven't checked in a while but I'm sure the VST is completely blocked now. The motor still runs great and the EMM is still cooled with the bypass. I'm not concerned with a blocked VST, I'm in Florida where the weather is hot and water is warm. Doesn't seem to me that the VST does anything other than cause problems. I

    • @RuthlessK9
      @RuthlessK9  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I attempted to open mine up but was unable to lift the top off. Be careful when attempting to open it, I broke the edge off the top trying to pull it apart. Thanks to some epoxy, fuel safe of course, I got it back together with no leaks. The VST is expensive to replace which I'm sure you already know. I'm also sure it is supposed to serve a purpose but mine motor has ran perfectly fine for 5 years after the bypass and as I said, I'm sure it's completely blocked. Good luck.

    I'm looking at one right now and thinking about buying the person was told it needed the emm and that it had 60 pounds compression on one cylinder the rest had 125 compression and ideals on that ? It is a 225hp

    • @RuthlessK9
      @RuthlessK9  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sorry for the delayed response. I guess it depends on the deal you get and your knowledge of the motor. 60lbs on one cylinder is bad, my guess is that the motor will need a rebuild, in addition to the EMM rebuild. If the price is right, go for it. The going rate for a motor rebuild around here is in the $2,500 range, make sure you find a reputable person.

    Hey Steve, wish I had watched your video last year. My 1999 150 Fitch fried the Emm last year. It has been flashed before and is now done. There is a 2000 150 ram ficht with a blown power head for sale. Do you know if they are compatible for parts? Replace the powerhead...or replace the Emm and injectors? Thanks

    • @RuthlessK9
      @RuthlessK9  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry to hear about your EMM. I would still recommend contacting DFI Technology, they’ve been in the business a long time. It is my understanding that each EMM is specifically programmed to match the motor and more importantly, Each injector. Here is the website, you should be able to find your EMM and the cost to rebuild yours.

    hey steve, does the T piece on the inlet side allow enough cooling to enter the fuel evaporator?
    my engine gets unto about 90 deg cells when I'm at 4-5000 rpm for any length of time, but when i slow down it cools back down

    • @RuthlessK9
      @RuthlessK9  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can only assume enough water makes it through the system, vapor evaporator included. My setup was an experiment and my main concern was cooling the EMM. Ive been running this way for about four years without any problem in hot Florida weather, water temps in the 80's. My water temp gauge stays between 140-160 Fahrenheit at high RPM, and much cooler at low RPM. If you're running 90 degree Celsius (194 f) you probably have blockage somewhere. Some of the FICHT motors, mine included have a third thermostat on the lower back port side of the motor. When I changed the routing, I also sprayed salt away inside the hoses and vapor evaporator, rinsed and blew them out with compressed air to ensure no further blockage.

    So I'm hearing bad things about the Evinrude ficht. I'm looking at a wellcraft with a 225 but not sure now. I know most people tend to reply with bad things but not sure if that is an over all view or just some having problems. like to get your opinion. Are they any good or what and are they still supported as far as parts go

    • @RuthlessK9
      @RuthlessK9  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, I completely understand all the negativity following the FICHT motors seems as they are known for having problems. That said, it's my understanding that the real issues were in the earlier production years, 1997-1999. Supposedly they worked many of the bugs out in the 2000-2001 motors when Bombardier took OMC over. There's a good article about the newer FICHT 200/225 motors manufactured in in Quebec and fire hazards regarding fuel lines. According to the article, the had a recall and are replacing the bad parts. The one you're looking at may have already been replaced but if not, it seems as though you could have it done.
      my.boatus.com/consumer/200225hpFichtFires.asp
      I would check the compression of each cylinder without question and be sure to test on the water when the motor is under load. I know at times they will start and run on the hose without issue but as soon as you're on the water, alarm sounds and it'll go into limp mode.

    • @RuthlessK9
      @RuthlessK9  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      All that said, I've been running my 2000 FICHT for eight years now, mostly without issue. The fuel pump diaphragm ruptured once due to ethanol in the fuel. The only other trouble was the EMM failure which was caused by the poor cooling system which clogged and caused the EMM to overheat. I like my motor and its treated me well so far, but knowing now what I didn't then, I may think twice before buying one. Good luck!

      R Reichel ....Don't believe the hype...I have a 98/99 Ficht 150 and had minimum problems. The only thing I had to replace is the canister vent/fuel pump assembly as shown in this vid. Maintaining it is very important and always use the XD 50/100 two stroke oil. Do not cheat out on the cheaper oil. Always replace the fuel/water separator behind the air box and always index the spark plugs and you will be fine. If your going to look or purchase a Ficht I recommend checking compression on all 6 cylinders and if possible take it out for a good test drive.

      Glenn Tate - I ran my 2001 FICHT 175 for 8 years, mostly without issue. The computer overheated and failed once due to plugged vapor evaporator. It failed one more time 6 years later for unknown reasons, the second time wasn't due to an overheat. Motor ran great otherwise. I have a new boat with 225 ETEC now and the damn computer failed on that too. Love the motor but damn... Good luck.

      Pablo Ortiz , not sure. E-Tec typically doesn’t have the same issue as the older FICHT motors. That said, it could still be the EMM. My Guess though would be water in the fuel, wrong oil or low oil, if slow but not actually in Limp mode, check the fuel filter and lines and make the line isn’t kinked somewhere or primer bulb isn’t collapsing. Good luck.

    What if you install a new one?

      Kendyke Watkins , if I remember correctly, you will pay about $2500 for a new EMM. If your EMM failed, you will need to find the problem cause before you replace or fix the EMM or it will just fail again. That’s why in my case, I rerouted the cooling hoses to bypass the plugged fuel vapor separator. Good luck.

      A year late, sorry!! The company is in Alabama, DFI Technologies. I believe there are two other companies that have started rebuilding them too, but DFI has been around a long time.

    Interesting motor, but you lost me at "... for $650 bucks, they fixed it, and mailed it back to me". That is like way above the amount I'd ever pay for an old motor, let alone take a chance putting back into one... It seems to me that whatever the assets this motor has, then, they are lost if one has to pay that sort of money to fix a component of it.

      proto57 , I don’t disagree but $650 was better than $15k to repower. Don’t burn a new E-TEC emm, Those can’t be rebuilt and a new one runs $2,200 and have to be installed/programmed by a dealer. I love the 2-stroke power but may be going to 4-stroke whenever that time comes.

    I am having issues with my 2003 115 HP. above is the link to the video of the issue. I can't tell if it's in safe mode or if i have a fuel issue.

    Why didn't you just buy new fuel vapor evaporator? a lot easier than all that you did. Engineers design it that way for a reason. fix it right!

      I believe the new fuel vapor separator was around $700 plus swap time. My rerouting of the hoses was less than $10 and done in a half hour, not to mention it corrected the problem so I didn’t have to buy a new one. 👍
