      Chelmarie Johnson Your dad?
That's so cool. He was my favorite bass player ever.
Funkiest and bluesyest bass player I ever heard.
I liked Dave Mason, but after his live album with Geralds incredible bass lines and his awesome solo in Give me some lovin, I was hooked on Dave Mason.
Your dad became to me, as a bass player myself, the prime example of what a great rock/funk bass player is supposed to sound like.
Dave hit the lottery when he found your dad.

Saw Dave perform a couple of times. One night two friends and I scored tickets to a Delaney & Bonnie gig. Bonnie came up to the mike and said, "We've got a real treat for you tonight. We have Dave Mason on guitar." The three of us stood up to cheer. No one else in the place even knew who he was. Such was Calgary.

Johnne! I had the opportunity to get the 24 trk master reels from this show! They used 2 inch tape and two recorders to stagger in the event a tape would run out during a song and then they could edit if need be! I ended up with the 6 reels of KANSAS and 3 OF TRIUMPH, and only a reel with one song from Dave. I mixed the KANSAS and TRIUMPH and gave the KANSAS reels to Kerry Livgren. The tapes sat in a building for years until someone just wanted rid of them! All I could afford was what I got and had to meet the guy halfway from Canada to Pennsylvania. I sure wish I had grabbed the masters of your set. I wonder where they landed!

I’m learning this song recently. Female vocals, and I’m 64 years old. The guys in the band wanted me to learn the song from Joan Osborne’s interpretation, but I needed to hear the original to see how it’s really supposed to go…so glad I did. My hubby is doing the guitar solos, so I will pass this along to him as well. Thanks for having this recording available!

I thought Delaney & Bonnie with Duane Allman would be the best version of this song.. until I came across this. What a phenomenal bunch of players all in the same groove absolutely going for it. I was also mistaken about who was the main driving force in Traffic which, in their earlier best years was very much a collaboration and without Dave Mason would’ve been far inferior. And his singing live here is even better than the original version. I am blown away by this clip.. fantastic stuff!
And a quick thought to end with - I wonder if Mick Fleetwood was a fan of what Delaney and Bonnie were doing back in 69 / 70 because it sure seems similar to the Buckingham Nicks thing his band were having so much success with not so long after. Blah, blah, I rest my case.. 😂
