I really loved what Ruby had to say to Jaune. She passed on her knowledge of leadership that she learned from Ozpin in The Badge and The Burden onto Jaune and as a result he was really able to come into his own and stand up to Cardin. It's honestly one of my favorite Ruby moments in the series and I really like the impact that Ozpin had on Ruby and Jaune both directly and indirectly. Also I really really love Ruby and Jaune's friendship as the leaders of their Teams and being socially awkward.
It's really cool.
Two things i wanna say.
1. This is when we are finally explained what Semblences are. In addition to Aura and weapons, everybody has their own personal ability unique to them (ruby can go fast, weiss uses glyphs, etc.) Part of the fun of new characters going foreward is discovering what their semblences are. You may go a few episodes, or even VOLUMES, before learning what someone is truely capable of. But when you do, hooo boy will your mind be blown.
2. This 4 part arc (not a pun, i swear) is what made Jaune my favorite character. His self-esteem issues mean he genuinely doesn't care what happens to himself (like when Cardin makes him do stuff for a few weeks) but when his friends are threatened he defends them without question (like Cardin threatening to pull a prank on phyrra), and that's a trait i find admirable. Plus I'm a sucker for anyone who uses a simple sword+shield combo in a setting with crazy weapons like this lol respect the classics!
Personally I don't like shields, so I would have preferred maybe dual wielding 2 simple swords.

- Glad you caught that person Ruby is bowing to in the intro. It does look like she's at the grave we see at the beginning of the Red Trailer.
- Ruby and Yang say "Nope" in nearly the same way. (Yang says it back when she fights the ursa.)
- Our first and only mention so far in canon of the elusive Professor Peach.
- Jaune being totally oblivious to the obvious and not thinking things through enough is a big character flaw a lot of people hate him for. It's more a problem in v2 though.
- That was actually a higher leveled Ursa, an Ursa Major.
- If you go back and look there's signs of Pyrrha's polarity semblance. When she goes to unpin Jaune from the locker room wall she doesn't actually touch her spear. You can also hear her use it when they're fighting the Deathstalker.
- RWBY knows how to use their limited episode time wisely for the most part. So many times so much can happen and time flies by.
A year later and still no mention of professor peach (unless its in the books i still have yet to read those)
@MiscatSquad In this case Cardin Winchester is based on the Cardinal of Winchester who was the Antagonist of Joan of Arc who John Arc is based on. That is the whole reason.

Cool fact, some Grimm have different variants for example earlier in the emerald forest Yang(with a little help from Blake) fought two Ursa minors(smaller and less spikey) while Jaune(with a little help from Pyrrha) killed a Ursa Major, the larger and more armored version of the Grimm.cant wait for more, loving the reactions

To answer your question the figure in the white cloak in the opening is a reference to Ruby's mother Summer Rose who was a huntress and was killed on a mission before the series starts.

It's cool that you aren't just judging Cardin and what to learn why he's a bully. Unfortunately we never learn anything about him so he really is just some bully.

18:56 ...if you watch at x.25 speed, you can see that all Pyrrha did was manipulate Jaune's shield placement so he could effectively block the Ursa claw while delivering the killing blow to the Ursa's neck and lopping its head off. (If she didn't the Ursa would've hit him first and probably depleted his aura completely).
You can see that at normal speed too.

I think Ozpin chose Jaune and Ruby to lead for the exact same reason:
They are at a disadvantage, yet they still pull through. They don’t feel sorry for themselves, they keep going, they fight for what they believe in, and who they love.
Think about it: Ruby is obviously at a disadvantage bc she is two years behind (she hasn’t learned the same things and isn’t at the same mental state as everyone else), and although Jaune is the same age, Ozpin observes him in the woods and can tell that he is also behind. And yet they both put forth their absolute best, even more so than everyone else. They had t work twice as hard to get where they are, and that makes them strong. Ozpin respects and admired that I think, and he decided they were excellent leader material bc if that.

Here's my theory about Cardin and his team - I think they were all bullied in the past. Cardin dealt with it by getting aggressive and rude and mean, to take power himself, and his team-mates dealt with it by finding a strong friend who would protect them. Now, you might wonder why the school tolerates bullying like Cardin's, especially when Professor Ozpin seems to know everything that goes on? Because this is a combat school, and eventually a bully is going to push some poor bunny-girl with weapon training too far and get his butt kicked. I have some other thoughts on this team, but I will save them for a later date.
I believe Ruby stood up to Cardin and did kick his ass in one of the manga anthologies
I love how you love Jaune, he's such a great character. But what I mostly like is that you understand him.You analyze him and get to a conclution for what he feels and why he do things. And that's very good for future references because he still have to much hard stuff to live :'v
It's a shame how people are kinda spoiling something by answering the question of who Ruby is kneeling behind in the intro. However, I will say that a lot of insight can be gained by listening to the song Red Like Roses Part II (which played in the show in v1ch8).
So here's a fun bit of trivia for you about the Grimm. The Ursa we see in the second episode here (the bear) was an Ursa Major, an upgraded version of the Ursa species Grimm we've seen previously. Earlier we saw Yang and Blake each kill one when they first encountered each other in the woods, and Nora ride one a few episodes later when they were gathering the relics. This here is an older, more powerful individual Grimm. As Grimm age, they learn and grow stronger, often looking more ferocious in the process. So not only did Jaune tackle a tough Grimm that the other, more experienced students fought, he took on the *stronger* version of that Grimm species.
If you go back to the red trailer, there's a grave where she was standing, and on it are the words
"Summer Rose: and thus kindly I scatter" and seeing as Ruby is the only other Rose we know, you can know that this is her mother's grave, who apparently passed down her love for dramatically flowing capes
Can't wait for your reaction to the final 2 Episodes of Volume 1, in my opinion they are the best Episodes and we're introduced to one of my favorite characters.

The opening beginning ruby is kneeling at her mother's grave and the white hooded figure is the symbolic ghost of her mother hence the white rose petals coming of her cape and Ruby has red rose petals .
Jaune is a precious baby boy on the steps to becoming a strong beefy boi that saves the princess trapped in the castle, gets the girl, and deliver the snarky quips.
Those cops are voiced by Burnie Burns and Joel Heyman from Roosterteeth, they had similar cop characters in some RT shorts. You've already heard Joel, he voices Oobleck, the history professor.

Jaune Bean. Instead of dying in every series he's in, he has to live no matter what.
In shows and movies I think background music is its own person. Think of it like music is reacting to these show and it always has the right reaction at the right time. Then the reaction comes out the form of music. That's how I think of it.
Keep in mind, she gave him confidence in a way that him finding out, by her or someone else, it stays. She only moved his shield, his swing was all just him~

Sorry for your loss. I find ot so fantastic people like Kat and Game Grumps and other TH-camrs have been able to give people something to get by the tough times. It certainly has been a place I can come back to whenever I need a pick-me-up. And how many have gone a step further by supporting charities and programs that help with these things ;). Since I know people will be telling you this a lot, might as well tell you too. There's gonna be an end credit scene at the end of the volume, so make sure to watch all the way until the end. This is gonna be the same for every volume. You can skip the credits or not, up to you. But I know that some people are going to be upset that you didn't watch all the way till the end. Trust me.

So, last time, I took Jaune to task for being negligent. I will acknowledge that he really steps up in that last episode. Does it make up for what the danger he is putting his teammates in? Only time will tell. Standing up and protecting the life of a person who wronged you is a major step in a good direction.
That being said, allow me to tease you without explaining my reasoning abotu who is the most mature. I think the two most mature people of RWBY/JNPR are Yang and Nora. The fact that Nora is my favorite character doesn't mean I have TO much bias on that regard. However, the depths of those two characters is... mind boggling.
As for bullies, as thirty something disabled person, I know a thing or two about bullies. I was always the slow overweight kid whom was always picked last for dodge-ball. That last one I never begrudged anyone. But being overweight, clumsy, and physically slow kind of sucked for my self esteem and social status. The fact that I was always the smart kid as well only meant that I knew how much people disliked me. Then when I hit twenty and developed a honest to goodness physical disability, (pretty bad Multiple Sclerosis) only meant that my peers thought I was target that couldn't fight back.
My own personal theory about Cardin is that he was the opposite side of the coin from Jaune. I always imagined Cardin, like Jaune who is canonically, being the son/grandson of military personnel (pure speculation) and that like Jaune he would have had pressure on him to be GREAT. The only difference between the two would have been how he snapped. Jaune having a inferiority complex, became desperate to do something grand, while Cardin's may have caused him want other people to believe that he was grand. Or put more simply, Jaune introverted his complex, while Cardin extroverted it.

Let's just take a moment to appreciate the fact that even this early on, Jaune was strong enough to decapitate an Ursa Major with a single swing of his sword. On pure strength. No Aura boost, and no Semblance. Strength.
I wonder what you would think of Amity Blight from The Owl House. For years she bullied Willow, the first friend the MC makes, and then goes after her as well. Over time we learn more about her past and why she's a bully. It's an interesting character arc.
As I've observed elsewhere, Blake was the one who burned him. but then, she looks like she might punish him back. much safer to bully the saint, y'know? :)

Listen to the sound of Pyrrha's semblance, then go back as watch the episodes before this and listen to how often you hear that sound when Pyrrha is on screen or just off screen. You will realize they have been showcasing it without explaining it since the beginning...

Just a warning I just rewatched Season 3 of RWBY and there are a lot of emotions and it did make me cry the first time so be ready for a rollercoaster of emotions
The Lady in White that Ruby is kneeling to- rewatch the Red Trailer. The hint is there.
I got some fun facts and answers for you about this episode:
Fact 1: Cardin Winchester alludes to Henry Beaufort, who oversaw the trial of Joan of Arc. This allusion has had the following influences on the character and show:
Henry Beaufort was a Cardinal and a Bishop of Winchester. As reference to this, Cardin's full name is Cardin Winchester, and he chooses the Black Bishop piece during the initiation.
His scroll ID is 1374-BEAUFORT.
In Volume 1, he bullies Jaune Arc, who alludes to Joan of Arc.
Fact 2: Because of the sudden jump between the ending of this episode and beginning of "Forever Fall, Pt. 1 & Pt.2", there is a small extra scene between the two in the DVD/Blu-ray release. Pyrrha, having heard birds fly away, turns and looks back at the hill that Jaune and Team CRDL were on, and Ruby asks if Pyrrha is okay, to which Pyrrha answers that she is fine. There is a slurping sound, followed by Pyrrha discovering that her jar is now empty and yelling Nora's name, startling Ruby.
My theory is that Cardin "leads" by entertaining his teammates through bullying others. It gives them an ego boost to be dominant over their victims and, yes, does bind them together as a unit. But the moment they face someone or something stronger than them, that goes away because facing a real challenge isn't what their team dynamic is about.
This is why Jaune is my favorite character. Even though he was bullied he fought to protect Cardin. Jaune is the type of person who doesn't give up, he's always there for people even risking himself. Personally I think Ozpin knows about the fake transcripts but he sees Jaunes potential and let him stay at Beacon. #JauneBeanProtectionSquad
Sadly, we don't get much information as to why Cardin Winchester behaves in such a way. The only theory I can offer is that he is so used to getting his way (being bigger and stronger than most others his age) that he thinks he can do whatever he wants. That most of his victims don't stand up to him (as he tends to choose those smaller and weaker than him) only reinforces this behavior. On the occasions that someone not only stands up to him but also shows him up (like Pyrrha did in class) he sees this as a personal insult and humiliation, forcing him to do whatever he has to do to reassert his need to dominate those around him (least others also stand up to him). It is only when he is clearly outmatched by someone that he will even consider backing down in favor of easier targets (though he doesn't seem to change overall... just moves on to bully someone new).
Of course this is just how I see the character given the lack of background we have been given on him so far. Hopefully in future Volumes we will learn more about his past and what has happened to him... but at this point in time it seems unlikely. Hope this doesn't spoil anything for you.
As for why the producers made him this way... his character is inspired, at least in part by Henry Beaufort, the Cardinal of Winchester who oversaw the trials of Joan of Arc... the inspiration for Jaune Arc and that historical conflict between the inspiration of these characters needed to be reflected to some degree, most likely to help Jaune's early character development.
Finally... if you want to know who Ruby is bowing to in the opening credits, go back to the RWBY: Red Trailer... you will see she is at the same place as that marker there... and if you have a good quality video (and a quick hand to pause it) you should be able to read what the plaque says. If you can't read it, let us know and we can tell you (but it might be a minor spoiler if we do).

Well Jaune is based on Joan of Arc, and Cardin is based on the Cardinal of Winchester who presided over Joan of Arcs trial which ended with her death.

Cardin is my definition of a Canadian bully, he literally sounds like and his voice is barley intimidating
Bullies, like Cardin, bully because that is the natural response of humans. Humans are selfish and lazy. If you can get what you need by knocking someone down and taking it, you would. This strategy only works in the short term. Most human learn early that it is not the best strategy for long life and it is better to be kind and help others so that they will receive kindness and help when they need it. Cardin never learn this life lesson until he found himself in dire need of help and with only Jaune there to help him. I love the look of Cardin when he realizes that this weak-ass goofball is really a badass after all. "Holy crap, Jaune?"

Do the teachers know Jaune lied his way in? technically we don't find out. my personal head-canon is Ozpin knew the whole time. Oz is too smart to be fooled but still allowed him in anyways. he proven himself during the team test so we can assume he earned his spot in at least.
Cardin is one of those people who does what he wants simply because he can. I get the feeling all his life he had it in his head that he was the best around, and his ego swelled as a result. Hence why he pushes Jaune around, and hence his intense dislike for anyone who acts like they're better than him, like Pyrrha. (By the way, you've got the name down pat. Way to go, Kat!)

I recently watched _Haloid_ and _Dead Fantasy_ . There's something about Monty's fight choreography style that you just can't imitate. Takes awhile for CRWBY to find their own style without him. There are also plenty of Monty moments and interviews you can watch.
Jaune always put others before himself he is a Hero by definition not by perception (a hero that helps others anyway they can, rather than the macho image like superman)
Someone else may have mentioned it in the comments already, but the Ursa wasn't attracted to the sweet smell on Cardin but the negativity he was giving off.

They kinda messed this bit of info up in this episode, so to dissuade any future confusion (and no, this is not a spoiler). Ruby's semblance is not speed, her semblance is the ability to turn herself into a cloud of rose petals (this is 100% canon). In this form, she can do many things, speed being one of her main talents. In future volumes, you will learn just what else she can do in this form, but as I said...no spoilers👍
I believe the reason Cardin picks on Jaune is because he's an easy target for him. Jaune isn't a very skilled student or huntsman and he seems like the "weak loser/lovable idiot" type of guy you'd see at high school. that's a very easy target for Cardin. you'd notice that the bully character is usually interested in the weaker characters because they're easy to manipulate and abuse. sometimes it might be because the bully is insecure or dealing with personal issues, but a lot of times its because they love the abuse they give. they love the satisfaction that thy have the power to hurt people and get whatever they want.
Well he doesn't pick on him any more later on in the series so I guess he doesn't think he's weak anymore. But bullies are most likely bullies because they feel inferior or have problems of their own.
