  • Hi Flower Friends! It's Nicole from Flower Hill Farm- today I am potting up my lisianthus from multi-sown trays to 200 plug trays. I also have lost many of them from fungus gnats. NOT FUN! Also- my ranunculus is two weeks old and looks great!

      I just thought of a great vid idea. If you covered any bug you can get while seed starting and then talk about how to prevent then treat. I just looked at the analytics on TubeBuddy and it could turn out really well for you.

    I’m living this life right now! I received my sticky paper Saturday.I thought I did everything right, boil water to my starter mix and a light coat of vermiculite and I still got algae and gnats. I spent thrippin’ hours last night replanting and more planned for today. So far the sticky pads are working! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

    It's the fungus gnat larvae that can damage the roots of your seedlings and the adults need access to the soil surface to lay the eggs. You could try putting a mulch of fine vermiculite to cover the soil surface of the healthy trays to try and prevent them spreading.

      I thought the same. I would add that she should have dusted off most of the dirt from the seedlings before transferring them to the other tray, since the larvae resides close to the root.

      I had a bad time with fungus gnats this year, too. And, I believe they came from the seed starting mix I was using. I laughed because I bought the exact same yellow sticky paper but I had a worse situation and it has taken weeks and I only finally started seeing improvement when I tossed what I had left. Because I was set up on my kitchen counter, it was particularly icky for me and I hope I don't have it again next year.

    I fully cover the tops of my soil with cinnamon to get rid of fungus gnats and it works wonderfully. I don't know if that would work on soil blocks though because the sides are exposed. Another thing that worked really well to cut down on the fungus gnats (but doesn't fully get rid of them) is to consistently spray with soapy water. Also the mosquito bits works great but only for a week at most. Then you need to reapply. Also treat everything at the same time, whether you see anything or not, so they don't just move from one container to another.

    Hi Nicole, I’d never heard of fungus gnats before and I’ve been gardening for 30 years or more, now I’m paranoid about them, 😲. My Lisi babies are doing fine , they take up far too much space on my breakfast table, and they have stolen my desk light, but they are adorable, who needs to sit down to eat, or have extra light to work!
    My ranunculus planted outside in autumn have just had a week of being covered in snow at -10c and they loved it, the anemone too, in fact they look better than the ones in the hoop house pampered with a layer of fleece.
    I have some new babies too, anemone growing from seed, I expected them to be temperamental to germinate, but they are all up and looking healthy.
    I love this time of year, spring is just around the corner, and all of us gardeners are nurturing such expectations for the season ahead. It makes the grey cold short days seem less monotonous .
    Now I must go and inspect my soil for gnats!

    • @Gigi-fv9ky
      @Gigi-fv9ky 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am in my 5th or 6th decade, depending on how you count it, of gardening and this year was the first time I had an issue with fungus gnats, too. I think they are more prevalent now and maybe there are some less than good things happening at the companies I bought seed starting mix from.

  • @joeschiavi9615
    @joeschiavi9615 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Your quandary with your ranunculus was literally my exact life this past weekend! I was planning to put them in their final growing spot in a tunnel but we got too much snow and couldn’t put the tunnel up in time SO bc they were 3 weeks old I had to pot them up into crates for now and had this back and forth about putting them in the garage or the low tunnel that’s maybe not sunny enough or my mom’s heated greenhouse but that gets too hot on sunny days- I love that these flowers are like your children, I can so relate to you!
    Something too I thought I’d share is I noticed when potting them up that the ones I grew in 1020 trays had amazing healthy thick roots, where as the ones in the cell trays, the roots were long and thready and smaller plants. Next yr I will do them all in 1020 trays. If you are going to just sprout them and move them quickly it’s not as crucial I guess.
    Always great to hear about your journey!
    🌸 Lauren

    I have had issues with fungus gnats for years now because I cannot seem to stop buying houseplants, and it seems to be always around seed starting time 😒. This year I am trying the mosquito bites in the water and there was an ad on Facebook for a little fan with a light over it. The light, works best at night, attracts the buggers and the fan directs them down to sticky paper. I couldn't resist getting one and so far gnat numbers are decreasing steadily. Yay! Oh and I also have the yellow sticky traps too.

    The Rusted Gardner just recently did a TH-cam video on fungus Gnats. He said the Gnats eggs come from the peat moss. He said pouring boiling water on the soil will kill 99% of them. You can also use hydrogen peroxide/water solution on your existing seedlings. He also has a video on this. I've been using the hydrogen peroxide method on my house plants for two years now after I got a huge infestation of fungus gnats. I haven't seen one of the little buggers since.

    Boiling water and hydrogen peroxide is best for fungus, learned it with the rusted garden Gary.I have lots of plants started since December and none of them has fungus.

      The boiling water and hydrogen peroxide is supposed to go on the dirt before you plant seeds, right? I saw a video from him and he said to pour boiling water on the dirt and let it sit for a few hours. I don't know what he says about the hydrogen peroxide????

    I lost all my Lisianthus seeds that had germinated at day 11 on day 13 or 14 -- I think because I pulled the plastic off too soon -- not enough humidity. Didn't see and gnats. I am sad, but plan to resow the rest today. Send me some good vibrations, PLEASE. This is my first time trying germination.

    I use to watch Gardening Naturally many yrs ago, decades now, you can find here too That guy made his own seed starting soil and used green sand for the fertilizer. Wonder if using that and not fertilizing later would help with the fungus pests.? I used it in my mix of soils, this is the first yr I'm starting seeds this early, guess time will tell. Great that everything is showing green. Love how you can go from Russia to down south in a sentence @ 11.00 LOL

    Little devils! I have those yellow sticky things all over my trays.
    Some people suggest to pour boiling hot water over the dirt to kill them, but I find that just delays any kind of planting because you’re waiting for the soil to dry out. What I do is get a stainless steel (oven/heat resistant) tray put my dirt in there and cook it.

    Hi Nicole! I’m so sorry about your fungus gnat problem! I hate those things! I use Fly paper also but could only find the tubes so I pull the loop to stretch them like a cone-tree and just set them out. Works great too! Also, I have just discovered a Bonide product that will kill the larva as well. (Or at least that’s what the package claims. I’ve just ordered it so I can’t say this from experience just yet.). Anyway, it’s Bonide Systemic Houseplant granules. Just thought I’d let you know about this as well. Love your channel and great info!!! Good luck!

My ranunculus is also showing growth, I was wondering what the next step was for them. I will put them in my high tunnel under cover, as we have a lot of snow right now. The lisianthus is a couple weeks behind yours, I hope it does ok. No sign of gnats yet. Thanks again!

    Mosquito Bits!
    Put a couple tablespoons in a coffee filter and staple it shut to create a "tea bag". Soak in a gallon or two of water for at least an hour and then use that water to water all your seed starts to help break the fungus gnat cycle (the BT kills the larva in the soil). Catching the adults on sticky traps is good to prevent them from laying more eggs, but to really get on top of the issue, the BT water really helps.

    I also have battled and am still battling fungus gnats they are not easy to get rid of. The culprit in my house was miracle-gro soils. So we switched to Pro-Mix and joke was on us! Turns out Pro-Mix (costing more) also had fungus gnats. So if you have used either of these seed starting soils this may be your issue. We are currently trying coco coir to start my veggies flowers and herbs in. However the gnats have found their way into this as well. There must be something that eliminates these little buggers.

    If it’s already in your soil, you can try watering with hydrogen peroxide 50/50 diluted with water. Not sure how it will work with seedlings though. Also not sure if that is considered “organic” although hydrogen peroxide will just break down into water and oxygen.

    • @seedsaverdiane5636
      @seedsaverdiane5636 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1 part hydrogen peroxide to four parts water works just as good as 50/50. Save on peroxide.

    There is a small microscopic “bug” that’s called hypoaspis if you buy it and put it in the soil it will eat up the larvae that is causing damage on the roots. It’s also used in Sweden to treat mites on chickens if you are a fan of organic stuff. The hypoaspis will die when they run out of food. And also. I ordered 50 ranuculus thingies, and when my package arrive I’m gonna blame it all on you and your inspiring channel 🤩 ( bought eucalyptus and Lizzie seeds as well) I’m born curious and have to try new stuff 🤣

    Unfortunately started my Lisanthus February 1st , waited over a month for Johnny's seeds. I work just Saturday's at a local garden center. I ask the owner about purchasing plugs local to me, Grow n Sell. I had seen a gardener mention when googling on growing tips.. Well, he SURPRISED me This past Saturday with 3 half trays. I get 72 plugs. I am leaving them at the garden centre until I have Room. My seedlings have Finally emerged but Lord they are so small!!! I don't know that I have the patience to start these again from seed! I watch them them I watch these more than I watched my now grown children.🤪 Did you ever think of getting plugs? I get the whole thrill growing your own, But these are just a little nerve wracking.
    Yes, I also have fungus gnats mostly from my amaryllis. I purchase the raid sticky tape. They get full☹. & my Hair gets stuck in the glue. GROSS! I also keep a small jar of apple cidar vinegar with a drop of Dawn liquid soap near by. They drown! Works!

    Augh!! Gnats are the worse, I saw one or two last year way towards the last weeks of the seedlings indoors so I got those sticky flats... OH BOY! somehow a bunch came out of nowhere! Nicole, one tip I picked up from an experience gardener was to add boiling water to the mix you use (seed starting or potting mix) first before using it.. that way it kills whatever may be lurking there... I let my mix sit for a while before using it but it is worth the try!

    • @jen.BarnesFamilyHomestead
      @jen.BarnesFamilyHomestead 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes! I always do the boiling water on the seed start mix (we had a TERRIBLE fungus gnat infestation and I lost probably 40% of my starts one year. UGH!) I also do a diluted hydrogen peroxide watering to kill off the larvae in the soil. sprinkle of sand/cinnamon on top of the soil to keep any adults from getting back into the soil to lay eggs AND sticky tape to trap some of the adults as well.
