This video made me realize how much I miss the big property, the house, and flowers gardens I put my heart and soul into before my divorce 16 years ago. I moved away from it, my flower friends, my herb friends and haven’t really gardened much since. Last summer I bought ten acres so I could plant. This weekend I opened my seed box and found seed packets dated 2001 through 2004. Time sure flies. Every one of them will go in the ground this spring and what will grow, will be a miracle. Then I begin the new growing adventure. I will just have to buy all the new things. Thanks for being here. ☮️-Kirsten

I would love to see a video on things that does/does not like the cooler. I'm having trouble having time quickly harvesting, processing, & arranging the flowers. Sometimes I start on Sunday I am don't get around to making the bouquets until 3 or 4 days later...

Thank you so much for speaking on this topic! I have been wanting to hear more on this part of growing flowers. It's so easy to focus on the big bright, colorful flowers and forget about the greenery, but the greenery can sometimes make the bouquet! It can be just as gorgeous as the flowers themselves ☺
They were often the finishing touch on all my bouquets this season 💐😀
When it comes for finding places to plant I used my cattle panels fencing as a holder for basils, flowers and other plants...I used rectangular planters, baskets and those grow bags by tying them to the panels....also t posts I used on the fencing to hang a planter from...it turns out to be a garden wall.....I bought a spraying water spigot and put it on a timer to make sure the plants were watered and I didn’t forget.....along the base of the fencing I planted it with cabbages and lettuces that benefited from some shade......
My first year, next year, will be a pure trial. Apparently about half the things you grow should be foliage and filler... You need tons of the stuff. Most of the things i sell will be bouquets and a few single species bunches. Great video Nicole.

There is a product we use in the florist called quick dip, by the Crystal company that makes floralife flower food. . We use it mostly for hydrangeas, it works by keeping the cells from closing off the cut stem, allowing water to hydrate the stem. Works, and I tend to use it on everything, especially tender greens. After the hot water bath, using quickdip adds days to dahlias!!

You know, adding a little bit of 7up soda to the water your flowers are in helps keep them fresh longer too. I don't know if it could work for dahlias/ soft stems but could be worth experimenting. I know Christmas trees really benefit from it.

You have 20 acres of beautifully flat land? Plant whatever you want. The satisfying feeling you get is amazing. It's your choice. People just like to flap their mouths. You have the right approach. keep going.
6:40 Euphorbia sap tends to build up in your system, so with repeat exposure you can begin to experience toxicity more quickly. Skip it for a year or two and you should be good.

I used the dark leaf celosia, maybe it's called Dragon's Breath. It has the same dark foliage like mahogany hibiscus but also deep red celosia seedheads. It doesn't die at all after weeks in the vase or wilt. It also doesn't drop it's seeds like amaranth. Just an idea for something very carefree.
I had a dark leaf celosia in a mix this year and it was phenomenal. GREAT now I need another packet of seeds LOL

How do you get bells of ireland to germinate?!? I have a horrible time. The hot weather in summer worked a little bit, but the ones who germinated got super leggy.
Oh no! I actually struggled this year too- they took longer than normal and surprised me. I'll be more vigilant this year with maintaining the weeds around my direct seeded babies.
put the seed packets in the fridge over winter.... then start of spring i germinate on a heat mat, they come up quickly for me.

I would def split a couple of them in half! Those look great! Thats how my peonies from eden brothers looked. Well, bit quite that many eyes, but most had 3-4 & great looking roots!
& no, we would not lose interest!
I think everyone that flower farms starts out growing "all the things" & then after they experiment they narrow down on the things they want to grow.

Nicole, Im so sorry about your Aunt, I feel your pain having just lost my oldest brother after a Very short battle with cancer; and no matter how much you may be expecting it its never easy to lose a loved one. I also pray your pooch is ok. I think 2020 may have to replace Thrip as the swear word! What the 2020?!!, Mother 2020!!, what do you think? Praying you and your family don't get COVID, its so new wracking quarantining and questioning every that tickle. Ive been exposed several times at work now, Ive had 3 tests in 3 weeks- all negative thank God! (Nurse Life)

So sorry about your aunt and I hope you and the fam remain COVID free. Look into euphorbia ‘Bonfire’. It’s stunning. A perennial that will grow in your area. I’m in zone 4 up here in Canada I’ve had it for years.
So someone who stopped by my Bouquet Bar this summer was raving about her perennial Bonfire in her backyard- I had to look it up- it is lovely! I'm wondering how it would be for cuts!

I can't believe you said ur going to make perogies!!!! I used to help my mother make them eons ago. Showed the kids how to make them one year. When I asked them if they wanted to make them the following year they said no thanks, too much work. Nothing tastes as good as homemade. Love your channel. Stay well.

Oh sweety, I am so sorry you have to have so many heart aches. When you mentioned the cinnamon basil, which I won't grow next year, smells like cinnamon. I thought it smelled like cat urine. Sorry I know my nose might be broken. It is a shame too as it is such a beautiful plant. Stay healthy and save.

I think Florets "Wrinkled Crinkled" and Johnny's "Persian Cress" are the same variety. Emerald beads is slightly different!!

The white finch orlaya is phenomenal! Lasts weeks in a vase! Fun fact: Those Hudson Valley organic seeds you got will probably outperform seeds of the same variety from elsewhere as they were grown in your area so will be naturally more resistant to issues you probably face. Moving forward I will be making a conscious effort to source as many organic locally grown seeds as possible.

have you ever grown bells of ireland ? i got the seeds to germinate but transfer to the garden was a failure.
Bells are best grown directly seeded into the ground. As you found out- they do not transfer well!
My husband is also having to quarantine at home now for the same reason as you! So we both have been working from home, along with 2 middle school age kids remote learning and my college freshman doing his entire first year at home online. Crazy times!!! I have been agonizing over the question, should I take a garden class. Registration ended Friday, but I just got an email saying they extended the deadline. Nicole, how important do you think it is to take courses for flower farming. I am not ready to jump in head first come Spring, but I am "testing" the waters or at least enjoying growing cut flowers. I have been an avid gardener for 20 years and love growing all the pretties and it would be a dream to become a successful flower farmer, but I hold myself back with lots of self doubt. Do you think taking courses is a must ??? How helpful are they??? I am thinking about taking the course, Growing in Hoop Houses and Greenhouses. Please, I would love some advice from you.
Ah! That is such a hard question to answer for me. I say it all depends on your budget. For me, I have a bunch of side jobs that made it feasible to buy the course and not sweat it. If I only had $500 to invest into my first year--- I'm not sure I would have. I find I learn better through trial and error but I also like have the classes to reference back to. If you've been growing for 20 years-- I'm not sure you need a basics course. The hoophouse course-- I've been considering that as well- that's specific and something I would consider-- but also first check out The Hoophouse Handbook by Lynn Byczynski.

I think a major reason I want to take the class through Gardener's Workshop is because this spring will be the first year for me starting in a greenhouse. I have always started seed indoors or through the winter-sowing method. So I thought there is probably some good information, some tips, in regards to growing in greenshoues/hoophouses I could learn. I am not really on a budget, so it's not a money issue. But I always have trouble spending money on myself. Lol. I wanted a greenhouse for at least 10 years but I never could bring myself to spend the money on my gardening addiction. Haha! So my husband surprised me with one this past September for our 18th wedding anniversary. Are you taking any courses this winter?
I have been growing/selling "Gesneriads" for almost 40 years. Within this family are African Violets, Streptocarpus, Sinningia (to name a few). Two things I have learned. Just because you LOVE it, doesn't mean your customer will. Also, just because you're NOT in love with it, doesn't mean your customers won't LOVE it. YOU be YOU. If it gets you out in the garden, then that's what you should probably be growing!
I can't seem to get the stems of Basil long enough to go into a bouquet. I do prune them but do you have any tips for making them taller
Cut super deep! Sacrifice the smaller stems for the middle one

I'm rewatching a bunch of your videos. In this one you mentioned that some people have said you are growing too many different types of flowers. I'm going to be doing that next season for some of the same reasons...I just want to figure out what grows well here and what works for me. Are you still planning on growing a ton of different things or have you narrowed down your list?

What does the hot water do for the hibiscus foliage? How does this prevent wilt?
Yes, here is something I found online while researching why this works:
Florists often plunge new shipments of blooms into water that's around 100-110°F. They then stash the flowers away in a cool area. The idea behind this process is that the warm stems are able to soak up a lot of water while the cool air up top keeps the blooms fresh.

I currently have all of those planted except weigela! I haven’t cut much from them yet

Hi from the UK! One of the cut flower / seed companies in the UK - Sarah Raven - advises that to use cerinthe as a cut flower you need to sear the stem ends in boiling water for 10 seconds

Try licorice basil! It also smells wooooonderful. The leaves and stems of that variety are hairy in a pleasant way so theyd add an extra bit of texture :)

I’ve DA roses in my garden, here in north of England, but they don’t have a great vase life - on the other hand kordes roses (especially florentina) are amazing for cut flowers. Love the fillers and your advice! But please don’t buy from Brecks, or in the spring from anyone! Not reliable to get named variety. Why waste a couple years? And Black Beauty is not a registered cultivar so you could get anything. You get what you pay for! Use reputable sellers!
