thanks for the vids from Happilife Farm -BC canada - I grew lisi's for first time last year and by some fluke the 4 flats of 72's and soil blocks all worked! This year I decided to put some in 72's and all extras in 2" deep meat trays open seeded - the open seeded ones have germinated like beasts and now I have to transplant into 200's - SO excited to watch you do this ....go sister flower farmers... so important to not be alone.
Tip for Geo Seed packets: You can reseal them by heating the opened edge with an iron. I use the flat iron for my hair. It is super easy and it keeps the seeds more fresh when they are resealed...and easier to store.
You’re so entertaining. Thank you for sharing your mistakes. As an enneagram 1, I don’t like admitting my mistakes. You give me hope for being more transparent with my gardening failures. Also, I talk to my plants like you do. I think they listen.
I cut foam board roughly into flat size pieces and stack them under the flats that need to be closer to the lights. As a flat grows taller, just remove one of the foam boards. I only have 3 shelves of warm&cool florescent lights and there are always a few flats that are shorter than the rest. The foam board also helps to raise flats above the heat mats when they are in smaller cells and get hotter than the other flats
Lisianthus is a native plant in Texas and it grows along creek sides where the soil stay moist. It’s a beautiful blue flower and always amazing to see them growing naturally in a prairie meadow
Hi Jeff! I love reading about where plants grow naturally. During my research I found that it will root deeply along the creeks so even if the top soil is dry, it will find the water it needs underground. I'd love to see them in the "wild"

Oh my gosh, that’s so fun! Where did you go skiing at? I LOVE to ski but we only get to go about once a year, and always to a resort. That location looked so natural & peaceful... and pretty!
I love your videos and you have gotten me into cut flowers! I am growing many new varieties this year. I have joined many Facebook groups and I have to be honest....flower farmers don't manage their properties holistically and don't think in a regenerative way. They take a lot from the land. The UN says we will lose all our topsoil in 60 years. Other estimates are much worse. The world is literally turning into a desert, in large part due to our agricultural practices. This is clearly not sustainable. Do you ever think of closing fertility loops and bringing in less inputs? Saving seeds? Building soil? Making your own compost? I apologize if I come across as judgy or preachy. I am just wondering if you think about these issues or if they are important to you? Keep up the great videos!
Those are scary statistics. I have thought about a lot of those things, including no-till methods. I do make my own compost as much as I can. I've saved seeds here and there but not at a sustainable level. All things to think about! Thanks, Jack!
Loving your videos! I have been binge watching. I just got back from Lowes with some shop lights to get started on my seed growing. I would love to see how you organize your seeds. or do you just use everything up that you buy?
Hi Nicole, check Vermiculite from Greenhouse Mega Store. Good price over there. I bought it every year and mix it half and half with peat moss. They work great for flower seedling.
Germination mix definitely makes a huge difference. I buy my supplies from Griffins Greenhouse in MA. Well worth buying germination mix vs a standard store bought mix. OMG ROFL crash and burn
This may sound weird last year I bought vermiculite at Home Depot is large pieces so took vermiculite placed about 1 cup at a time into food processor and pulsed a few times to desired size worked great . just a thought did with perlite as well
You can pinch them for more blooms but it will delay blooms by several weeks. Many people pinch half of each variety that way they get the early flowers and then the late ones!
Do you start fertilizing once they have true leaves? How much heat gets through the styrofoam trays? Would plastic trays be better? Put your lights on a timer.
The heat might travel faster through the plastic trays but I use both and haven’t noticed a difference. All of my lights are on timers except the hanging one above the mats. I leave that as a reminder to check on my plant 🌱 babies!
Did you buy the plug trays from Johnny’s Seed? I like your idea of flat tray planting and thinking of doing some of my seeds that way. Do you know if it will it set plants back each time they are re-potted? My toughest flowers this year will be vincas. Because of you....... I’m going to be starting a bunch of seeds! I got seed jealousy watching! Won’t be starting any of mine till March. Keep up the inspiration! 🥳🥰😄
Hey Nicole, this is my third time watching all your seed planting videos 😂 Okay so I’m prepping to start seed planting for the first time. I need to get my shop lights, how many lumens? You may have mentioned it in another video, but I can’t find it.... Also have you planted Ranunculus corms? I received mine from Jake, my house is 70, my basement stays about 62 and my garage is at 40 😬 I’m not sure where to store them until planting time....I’m worried 40 is too cold and 62 is too warm.
Do you need to put your heat mats on any kind of special surface or do they not get hot enough to matter whether it’s wood or granite or metal or something else? Thanks!!
Great and informative! Girl I struggle so bad in Lowe's, try not to buy everything! 😩 so glad some of your eucalyptus is doing better. I have my first eucalyptus sprouts!! I'm so excited. Never made it this far with it before. 😅
i am having trouble keeping heat mats cool! they get hot for me. i bought a thermometer to see how hot. with a soil block would you place the thermometer between the blocks? if i poke one it might break on me.
HELP! I'm a newbie and planned on starting seeds using the soil block method...they are sold out everywhere of the micro ones!! Can I start snapdragons, celosia, gumphrenia, and zinnias like you did here with the lisianthus? Then pluck them out and put into plug trays or transplant out into garden without having to "pot up"? Love your videos!!!
You guys there in America use Fahrenheit right? Just asking..😊 I wanna start learning how to be a flower farmer this year here in Italy.Getting a lot of info's from this channel already.. Thanks a bunch!
I update them from time to time in my videos. I am planting them in the ground in the next few days. I just posted a few updates on Instagram and I'm about to post a video with clips of them.
(You could use a covid mask to keep from breathing the dust from the seed starting mix, which probably is not very healthy for you. You gotta take care of yourself so you can continue to educate and entertain us)!
The seeds are not really covered, like if they were under a layer of germination mix. It's just a sprinkle of verm-- it's common practice but also not required. Many people successfully grow them without any cover at all. My research has recommended the verm and my growing buddy Gina has always used it- her lissies are to die for!
Love your videos and your cheerful presentation 😁. Wish I could buy your flowers/support with $. Instead I will LIKE and share!! Best of flower luck in this new year ❤️

I saw that! I've tried to get a link there but it just doesn't want to work. I could only get it to work with copy and paste. Thanks so much!
I just have boxes of seeds all over. I need to be better organized!
Hi I watched all your videos and I wish you good luck.
Thank you, Iman!
It's all about the emojis!!!!
I'm so excited to make some new ones and change them out every once in a while. So fun! Love yours!
Good informative video Nicole!
Thank you!
Hi Nicole, check Vermiculite from Greenhouse Mega Store. Good price over there. I bought it every year and mix it half and half with peat moss. They work great for flower seedling.
Thank you I will!
Germination mix definitely makes a huge difference. I buy my supplies from Griffins Greenhouse in MA. Well worth buying germination mix vs a standard store bought mix. OMG ROFL crash and burn
Haha! This bag is from Griffins ❤️💐😄⛷😂
This may sound weird last year I bought vermiculite at Home Depot is large pieces so took vermiculite placed about 1 cup at a time into food processor and pulsed a few times to desired size worked great . just a thought did with perlite as well
Not weird! I actually did that with rock phosphate that was too big last year (I used a coffee bean grinder) great idea!
You've inspired me to try lisianthus this year! Do these need to be pinched?
I did get them from Johnny’s. I’d like to invest into the sturdier ones from Bootstrap Farmer but they are out of my price range at the moment 💐
Hey Nicole, this is my third time watching all your seed planting videos 😂
Okay so I’m prepping to start seed planting for the first time.
My corms are just in bags in my basement!
I really want to add lisianthus to my cut garden this year.
It's so romantic. I love it!
Please keep us posted,I have planted some lisianthus seeds in the dirt, tried to copy your entire process. So please....
I definitely will- I don't see anything yet!
Amazing video
Thanks, Tyler!
Another video yay
Hi Andria!
Do you need to put your heat mats on any kind of special surface or do they not get hot enough to matter whether it’s wood or granite or metal or something else? Thanks!!
Hi! I had them on plywood and found the mats struggled to maintain heat so I added a foam board underneath. Keeps temp great
I loved the crash
😂👏⛷🤷♀️
What was your last frost date last year and did you get these out on May 1st?
Great video...
Thank you Sheryl!
Great and informative! Girl I struggle so bad in Lowe's, try not to buy everything! 😩 so glad some of your eucalyptus is doing better. I have my first eucalyptus sprouts!! I'm so excited. Never made it this far with it before. 😅
Yay! Baby steps 🌱
i am having trouble keeping heat mats cool! they get hot
for me. i bought a thermometer to see how hot. with a soil block would you place the thermometer between the blocks? if i poke one it might break on me.
What do you used to clean the trays before using them? Dawn dish soap???
Yes- I wash it just like I would a pan.
I’ve done this method with snapdragons, gomphrena, sweet peas, lavender, and herbs. It doesn’t hurt to try!
Thank you so much!!
You guys there in America use Fahrenheit right? Just asking..😊
I wanna start learning how to be a flower farmer this year here in Italy.Getting a lot of info's from this channel already.. Thanks a bunch!
Yes- we use Fahrenheit 💐🌻 You’re welcome 😊
Hi Nicole, any update on these lovely seedlings?
I update them from time to time in my videos. I am planting them in the ground in the next few days. I just posted a few updates on Instagram and I'm about to post a video with clips of them.
@@FlowerHillFarm 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻😊
HAHAHHAHAHHAHA the blooper! I just love your goofiness! ahhahahahaha
(You could use a covid mask to keep from breathing the dust from the seed starting mix, which probably is not very healthy for you. You gotta take care of yourself so you can continue to educate and entertain us)!
I almost grabbed one- the dust gets me every time! Next time I will
I notice on all my seed packs they say not to cover the seed. So just curious the thought process on using the vermiculite? Thanks. 💜💜💜
The seeds are not really covered, like if they were under a layer of germination mix. It's just a sprinkle of verm-- it's common practice but also not required. Many people successfully grow them without any cover at all. My research has recommended the verm and my growing buddy Gina has always used it- her lissies are to die for!
@@FlowerHillFarm perfect thank you :). You're amazing!
Love your videos and your cheerful presentation 😁. Wish I could buy your flowers/support with $. Instead I will LIKE and share!! Best of flower luck in this new year ❤️
So nice of you, Jeannine! I appreciate your thoughts!
“I have for some reason thought that it was right for me…” 😂
Can i direct sow in Zone 9a. Houston texas? In January lowest temp 30 degrees. I wish we had actual seasons. Mild winter, warm spring, LONG HOT HUMID, Mosquito infested
Summers.
They do grow wild in Texas- but direct seeding for cut production is not recommended. I love a good experiment though so who knows!
Yes🤩🤩🤩🤩
