I’ve just shown my husband your set up and told him that this the plan for the garage! Re your grandfather’s piece at the end- I wish everyone felt like that. Every season is full of these little miracles.
I have so many seedlings itching to get into the outside world. You, and many others, have encouraged me to step outside my box. Cosmos, snaps, dara, lupine, lavender(s), etc!! This could my “National Lampoons Gardening” year, and not have an inch of grass due to all these beautiful plants.
Your grandfather is such a gift. What a genuine passion he has for plants! Thank you for the sharing your family with us. I wish the very best life for all of you.
I sowed my first ever snaps a few days ago. No germination yet but they aren't on a heat mat...just in a warm room under lights. My Alyssum germinated in 2 days though! I'm so excited! My first year growing anything from seed.
Great video Nicole 👍 , lovely to see your mum and grandad helping you ❤️ , gonna start my snapdragons this weekend can’t wait to see how they do , never grown them ,before my dad when we were little, as a child we used to pull the flower off and pinch so it was like a little mouth opening and closing used to amuse us , Nicole I really my granddaughters talk fondly about me when they are older about the happy memories we are making now, freya 7 has been coming to my allotment Since she was 9 months old , she’s almost 7 , and her little sister myah is now 18 months and she is now coming with me , ❤️ thank you for yet another great video 😘
I love how close your family is! Your mom: "Hell Yea" 😆 What you're talking about with every 3 soil block sections = ing a 4 foot section, that's kind of what I did... I'm going to explain what I did because it may help someone plan theirs out! So after I figured out the space I felt I could manage to maintain all season, keep up with hand pulling weeds, etc. I planned out what flowers I wanted to grow (I have 4 40 foot beds for my annuals & they're 3 foot wide, not counting my row for just sunflowers) then i split all 4 beds evenly to fit all varieties in those beds. That gave each variety about 4' x 3' section. So them I looked @ each flowers spacing, to determine how many flowers would fit in a 4' x 3' space. Well there were some things I wanted a lot more of than that!, & some things I didn't need so many... maybe I'm not sure if I'll like it, or I have a lot of varieties of that flower, or it has 4" spacing, & that's just a lot or something... So then I just went through and tweaked each thing. If there was a variety I wanted more of, I'd find something I wanted less of, or was willing to sacrifice for more of the other flower. So for example: if I wanted 12 more queen lime zinnias- (@ 6" spacing that = a 1' x 3' section) so I'd subtract a 1' x 3' section of something else. (Preferably something that also has 6" spacing, because that's when it can get time consuming to figure out, when the other flower I'm swapping g it out with has a 4" or 9" spacing) (I did that so that in the end I knew I would still have the amount of flowers that would fit in my beds, & not have to keep redrawing or recalculating the entire bed to figure out if it would all fit! Which I did have to do a few times after one of my children distracted me & I lost track of what I was doing! 😫) & then I moved things around according to when It was going to be planted. In the beginning I just added everything in alphabetical order, but there are some things (like say red and orange zinnias and calendulas) that I'm not growing a ton of until midsummer, for fall bouquets, so it wouldn't make sense to leave room to plant them next to the zinnias im starting in spring because they'll shade them out! *YES! it took me a long time! 🤣
OHH my goodness! From Sharing your ahhh ha! moments re: snap spacing to experiencing your family’s involvement to zanny hystericalness you bring such light to my life! Thank YOU!
Feeling exceptionally stupid right now. I’ve been putting my heat mats on old towels but I see you use rigid foam insulation. Ten years. TEN years (maybe more?) and this never occurred to me?
YES! The mint green ones are 2x2 foot squares from Lowe's for maybe $2 each. They work perfectly! Mine were having a hard time holding heat on the plywood and I thought insulation might help hold the heat just maybe two years ago....game changer!
Don't feel bad...we are all still learning! :) It is SOOOOOO helpful that we can learn from other flower farmers experiences! You are doing a great job! :)
It truly is the best feeling in the world when something just clicks. (referring to your 3 soil blocks to square garden footage) I have felt that before too. We're looking forward to watching your snapdragons grow! 😀
I just watched this again. Where are your grandfather describes how plants grow, his wonder excitement and passion are just so captivating. absolutely beautiful to catch on video. You are a blessed girl Nicole🙏🏽
So fun, doing this with your family! 🥰 Have you ever seen the larger soil blocker that has a small square cutout on top. The smaller blocks fits right inside. So once the seedlings started in the smaller blocks start putting on size, you can place the blocks that germinated inside the larger block, giving you more time before they need potting or planting in the ground. TH-camr "Bloom & Grey Flower Farm" from the UK uses it. I thought it was ingenious! I asked her and she said hers came together as a kit.
Yes! I have the same one. Last year I used it for peppers, eggplants and sweet peas. I found it used a LOT of soil but it is good for many things. I was blowing through bags of my pricey soil blocking mix. Mine was also a lot.
I am planting flowers on a smaller scale than you Nicole but I am just glad to be giving it a try this year. You are my motor! Motivator! Thank you! I love seeing and hearing your grandpa, he's so sweet!
Very special video with your mom and Gramps! You will be happy to have this in the years to come. Loved hearing him wax poetic about the growth process ... so sweet! “Hell yeah”, “Umm, we use thrips around here”. “Thrip yeah!” 🤣🤣🤣
Gramps is precious. Simply precious. Save this last clip of him talking about the “birth of flowers” forever and ever. And when people come to your farm, you play it for them! And it should be your intro to your vids and your motto and you should be able to quote it like it was the half time speech of the Super Bowl! Ok, ok too far. But man, was that something special! Special, indeed!! 😍💕
I just cannot love your grandpa enough! Cherish every moment with him. I miss my grandpa! What a gift you have in him. Love sent from your zone 8b flower friend from the sunny and rainy Willamette Valley Oregon! 🌸🥰

Love seeing your family share the love of gardening! I also love snapdragons and started 17 varieties similar to your varieties. Another fun variety is the University of California mix from Select Seeds. I started mine early after the lisianthus and have most of them outside hardening off. I hope to plant them outside early April in southern Wisconsin to enjoy a long bloom season. This is the first year starting them this early so we will see. Thanks for a great video on Saturday morning!

Oh that stinks your 2nd heat mat was missing! I just ordered that exact two pack a couple of weeks ago, and when they came I realized I only need one mat that size. Can I send it to you? I know you’ll put it to good use! I started snaps two weeks ago (I’m in Vermont, zone 5) and I’m not having great germination rates...not sure what I’m doing wrong, but seeing you starting yours now makes me think I’m not too late! I’m going to start more today!
If you want it I can send it NDA so you don’t have to wait another week!
That is such a nice offer but you should keep it just in case you end up needing more space (we all usually do)!! Thank you so much for being so generous 🥰💐
@@FlowerHillFarm 🌱Ok Nicole... this is not the time to be shy and polite. She obviously cares enough to give it to you. Send her your address via DM. I am certain that she will like that.🤗 🌾
