  • Focus on Gesture & Form: Studying figure drawing from Charles Bargue's drawing course book.
Topics: Gesture lines, Mother Forms, Proportions, Balance, CSl and Line work.
I'm using the figures in Part 3 of the drawing book to practice basic figure drawing. This type of exercise is great for preparing for drawing from live models in a studio or art school. Each of his figures have a singular rhythm. This gesture then connects the anatomical landmarks and forms to a flow which is felt within the drawing. His drawings are beautiful and very helpful for learning figure drawing. I'll show you how I personally approach these drawings for the goal of preparing to draw from live models in art school or studios.

I rarely comment and even less watch a video without skipping some sides
But THIS video really opened my eyes about how to do better gesture drawings
I use the Reilly method because it matches more my way of thinking but your base construction and way of explaining really opened my eyes so thank you so much I hope to see more of your content on the future

Great video. Really good break down of construction. Is this part of another series or videos/patreon exclusive? Seems like it was continuing from something else at start and like you were discussing a series of topics at times. For the muscles, I remember drawing the double bulging cylinders when I started out. I forget where I heard or who told me the explanation, but what always stuck with me was learnign that muscles always work in tandem and are what move the bones. It's pretty obvious when you hear it, but bones dont move on their own and need the muscles to pull the bones in directions. The msucle that pulls will bulge while the opposing muscle will stretch flatter - ie curling your arm will cause the bicep to bulge and the tricep will flatten out. To straighten out the arm, the tricep will contract/bulge and the bicep will flatten/relax. These tandem muscles working in opposition to one another and knowing that the muscles attach at set points (technically ligaments) on the bones means they always bulge and flatten in relation to those points.
It was a very simple explanation with cylinders and putting simplified muscles on them, but always stuck with me. You wont have bulging muscles on both sides of an arm or leg if you understand that simple principle and even beginners that dont know names of muscles or other anatomy can understand simple concept on their own and see it in action with an Arnold or other body builder showing off triceps and biceps and so on.
Thanks again for these videos Brad. Always enjoy your content.

Hi Bradwynn, could you make a drawing course based on Loomis: head, hands and figure? You are a very good teacher , I would buy it on gumroad, and I am sure many others would as well. Your style of teaching Loomis is the best! I hope it is something that is interesting to you.
Thank you and all the best to you!
