  • UPDATE: "Draw Better Portraits Through the Study of Anatomy" my new full portrait anatomy course is finally here! app.gumroad.co...
Here is an example of a great exercise for getting better at figure drawing using the Reilly Abstraction (aka Reilly Method) for the figure. I learned this in art school at Watts Atelier a few years ago.

**THANK YOU** all for watching and subscribing!!! We made it to 70K today this morning!! I'm so crazy excited and I appreciate you guys SO MUCH. Thank you
I will be making more finished figure drawing videos soon but most won't be able to be post on TH-cam as they usually block, or in my case, demonetize nude drawing videos. I will be starting up a Patreon page soon to post these videos and give access to these types of drawing videos and photo references for cheap. I've been super busy with day job lately and been rethinking my life. I'm working towards a goal of doing this channel and Patreon full time one day. Oh man it's going to be so AWESOME when I quit my j-o-b

This is very helpful. Thank you so much. I was just starting to get into figure drawing too. Also, can you please make some more videos on head lay-ins and take them up to 2 value stage? And focus more on teaching how to map the shadows, please? I am currently following jeff watts videos and I don't understand 70 % on how he is mapping the shadows. So can you please do a tutorial on that one?

    • @bradwynn
      @bradwynn  4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

Great idea! Thank you! Jeff is super fast and probably the best draftsman on earth lol. I had the same issue and I think it’s because my anatomy knowledge is far less than his. He has built up such a vast store of anatomy knowledge that he can fly through the mapping process hitting all the muscle insertion points, bone prominences and muscle shapes. I’m much much slower lol but I will try my best to explain what I’m doing when mapping in shadows next time. Thanks again for checking out the video! I really appreciate it!

Thank you so so so so so so much for taking the time to make this and putting it up for free!!!! Your commentary and explaination while calculating the figure is exactly what I've been looking for and struggling to find. Hi Brad. Nice to meet you.
I was pleasantly surprised to see how you work. You are absolutely GREAT! I draw for a simple passion but I am learning small, big things about how to approach a portrait or more commonly a face. This is thanks to you. I am truly grateful to you for the great videos you share, as well as your experience. I don't speak English very well and I apologize, but I believe that in this kind of thing, as in many others, it is not necessary to know the language but the approach that an artist like you is able to convey even to the layman. Thank you so much. P. S. I bought Loomis's book and, I'm sure, I will benefit from it. My goal is to make portraits of all my wonderful family. Sorry if I disturbed. Thank you again. A fraternal hug.

It's very interesting to watch, and I enjoy the explanations because the popular books on Reilly (and lets face it, most Art text books) are pretty awful. I'm wondering if you kind of develop a shorthand for this, because working this way is too slow to produce art on a deadline -- or is the point just to reinforce base structure, form, etc?

Wondering what class did you have to learn all the locations of the muscles Origin and insertions, bones, joints? Your the first person I had come across with an art and muscle bone background.
I had heard from one of my teacher she had to with her advanced degree. Though she also pointed out what use to be required is much higher than it is now days.
I learned mine in my Kinesiology, Biology, Physical Therapy Assistance and several Personal Trainer certifications. Each at varying degrees. The lower arms and lower legs being the most detailed of classes.
It's nice to see others who know the body as such.

It was very interesting to see your way of drawing.
However you draw the lower legs very elongated, it looks more like a comic/manga character rather than the actual model. Her calves are thicker/more muscular in the reference photo, too.
The chest of the first and third model are both thicker, the shoulders wider. Since you drew smaller shoulders, the arms look manga-like with the elbows facing unnaturally inwards.
And the second and third models' boobs are not on the same level, the right one is way too high up there. (use the shoulder's line, they should match)
Also the knees on the third model. Ok this one really bothers me because in your drawings each thigh should be the same length, so the knees shouldn't be on the same line. The right one is supposed to be lower.
That said... you can still draw much, much, much better than I can, and I enjoyed the video. It just... bothered me because you were so serious about the thigh muscles, and then fudged the boobs. (But it was still leagues better than what I can do.)

Very useful vedio. But little confusion about measurement. If you don't mind Pl mention measurement of full length separately

He underestimated the gesture building in the mistakes to pack on masses after. He puts himself out there tho. So no judgement. I’m getting a refresher from him anyway.

On the first photo, you put the hip in a wrong position with the overlay photo. You can clearly see on the reference photo the iliac crest line and oblique above it. You place it above the said oblique. :(

every artist I listened says acromion wrong, there are two structures with similar names, one is acromion and the other is coracoid process. Acromion comes from the spine of scapula, on the lateral end. Coracoid process comes from the ventral part (frontal) and placed more medially.

This was my favorite method to do quick sketch about 4 years ago, before life got in the way and I stopped creating art, I started drawing and painting again and needed a refresher on the Reilly method, hands down you have done the best job reminding me the correct way to do it. Thank you.

It seems that most artists I notice are into drawing women but I'm into the male anatomy from head to toe! Please, if you can help me in this area, I would be indebted to you! Women seem easier to draw!

Hi could you maybe do a video someday about how you would approach a male or female face if you had a really specific design in mind?
As in character designs, normal people, slightly stylized, the way you do your reilli-ish faces?
I would love to see someone like you draw character designs, with an emphasis on the face and charisma, rather than generic bland people drawn in a concept art style where the hook is the cool space armour, and not the face...
I don't think i phrased the question very well, but anyways, thanks so much for all your videos, I'm learning a lot watching these!
