  • This is for a second generation 4Runner (1989-1995). The first generation (1984-1989) is identical as are other Toyota trucks of the same vintage.

The best video on doing a clutch job on second gen Toyota trucks. Most don't show all or even most of the steps. Great job!

Great video. Very detailed and helpful. One thing I didn't notice though, is you putting a bit of grease or oil on the inside edge of the seal. It's important to do this on the initial start -up.

I read up on toyo forum, print out service manual and then found this video. You just gave me tons of confidence that I can do this job without taking it to the shop! Just ordered clutch kit, seal and gasket. Now probably invest in transmission jack lol

Very good videos 1 & 2 both showed everything needed to replace clutch, including all the torque specs for each bolt.

Saw a 91 for $800 that caught my eye, the master slave cylinder was just replaced but it needs a clutch, found this series, pretty helpful, I might be able to do it or at least get it mostly done before I have to call my old teacher

I'm in the process of doing this same thing now. I also used bread to remove the pilot bearing. Grease didn't work. I still have to put the rest back together.

That grease in the bellhousing your looking at is coming from the transmission input shaft seal. Its leaking and you should replace that seal .
If it was the rear engine main seal you would've seen oil coming fron around the crankshaft.

    Great video 👍
Reckon that "grease" in the bell housing might just be a build up of old oil spray and clutch plate material from a previously leaky main bearing seal though 😉

Bell housing grease likely due to transmission front seal leak. Check carefully before pulling the rear main plate off. My ‘89 pickup has studs in the plate that bolt to the oil pan. You can’t remove the plate without removing the oil pan, and you can’t remove the oil pan without dropping the front differential on the 4wd. If it isn’t leaking I wouldn’t touch the rear main seal unless you want a bunch of extra work to do. The Toyota oil pan is NOT an easy job.

I was always told to clock the driveshafts back to where they were when you took them off. I think the exception was if you were going to replace the u-joints.

Everyone be sure to use a high temp spline lubricant for the spline and throw out bearing. The spray he used will not fully protect the metal

Hey 50's kid. all that grease inside the bellhousing is oil that has leaked from the rear main seal

50's kid !! Question. I have misfire fuel cut off codes from every cylinder 1-6, I've checked vacuum lines and I'm good, I've cleaned the maf, I've replaced fuel filter, fuel pump, cleaned throttle body, cleaned idler control valve and still nothing ! I'm really stuck, what do you think it is? And the car just feels like it's going to die and shakes really bad when I take my foot off the gas. But when I give it gas it's all good? What do you think it is? I really need help 😭😭

Watch my fuel trims video and see what your fuel trims are like at Idle and at 3000 rpms.

    • @OFFROADSLuTZ
      @OFFROADSLuTZ 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Even though you cleaned the MAF it may still be faulty. I had one that was doing the same as yours. I borrowed a very expensive high end scanner from a good friend and viewed the fuel trim, it was actually quite awesome watching it all in real time. Turned out although the MAF was properly cleaned and at idle seemed to work fine you could actually see the exact RPM when it started to go haywire.

    So your clutch should
Start engaging like what an inch from the bottom? Had slave cylinder issue and now clutch feels different! When cold
Hard to shift gonna check my oil in tranny and I bought new shift bushings.

You didn't show how to install the clip that holds the throwout bearing to the arm? I can see the bearing is sticking to the arm when you move it. Mine isn't and the clip doesn't seem to fit behind the arm and clip into the hole on either side of bearing?
