Watched the final episode this morning. Saville is portrayed as and cuts quite a pathetic figure in his final years. He was trying to live off his influence and power from decades previous. The suspicion was always there in sections of society but he’d already wreaked widespread damage to so many lives by then. Agree with you regarding Steve Coogan’s portrayal. It was a hard watch at times. Been a long standing fan of his work going back 30 years but this must have been the toughest of roles for him to undertake and get right given the level of feeling that his portrayal might generate.

You don't see the acts, so it's left to your imagination, and that is just as bad as the real thing. Steve could get awards for this. He's crap at playing the younger version.
He gets the voice bang on, after all he voiced savile in spitting image. But look at savile in any media.
He was charismatic. People loved him.
He's portrayed as a "hmmmm... little gurl... sweeties" kind of pedo.
He never nervously asked kiddy stuff... or gingerly asked questions.

@Jayke1981 I found it the other way round. I found he totally nailed the older savile. If you look at the Andrew Neil interview... its basically what Coogan is doing. The older nervous, defensive, erabrasive savile. The guy one step from prison.
But the younger savile was never jittery. He was overconfident. Literally groped girls live on television.
The victims didn't day "Oh, he nervously asked me... anything else... down... there" he just grabbed her, snogged her and his fingers were already there.
His "anything else down there" lines were from his live on telly parts. Where he would make double entente to the laughs of millions.
He never saw victims, and nervously avoided. He Literally caught a victim live on air, and mocked her when she said "I hate you for everything"
He was overconfident before he even worked in the episode 1 dj Club. By then he was already famous on radio Luxembourg and had been wrestling 15 or so years.
In the ring he was cocky.
There was never a nervous jimmy savile.

Steve's portrayal of Savile as a malevolent, sinister opportunist was unsettling and brilliant. He was able to turn on the charm, and then the menace at the drop of a hat.
The real tragedy is that the entire nation fell under his evil charm. Savile lies rotting in an unmarked grave. I would like to think his egotistical soul would have hated the ignominy of that.

To play devils advocate, i don't believe the nation did fall under his charm. Growing up in the 80's/90's I didn't know a single kid who particularly enjoyed his programmes. He was an old man, he was weird and the only reason anyone watched was because children got to ask for their wishes to be granted. The kids that did watch did so in spite of Savile, not because of him.
His ability to stay relevant for so long had nothing to do with his popularity and everything to do with the leverage he had on people in positions of power.

Coogan's performance is incredibly well studied. He has it all, the voice, timbre, and rhythm, the facial expressions, but also quite remarkably has the body langauge to a tea. The only thing he did not have is that his physique was a little on the large size, but seldom is this noticable. I've watched all four episodes; a tough watch but really puts Savile's crimes into perspective. So brave of some of the survivors of Savile's abuse to appear on camera, their testimony is the key to the purpose of this series.
The writers and producers have got this absolutely right. Steve Coogan is brilliant in portraying both sides of Savile, the showman and the abusive narcissist.
There are plenty of references to the failures of the BBC and Police forces which allowed Savile to 'hide in plain sight'.
Yes, tough to watch because, we as a nation were totally taken in by his subterfuge.

Steve Coogan is a superb actor. The series is brilliantly done and done sympathetically towards the victims. Saville was such a evil creature but very crafty and clever. The “jester” routine was his way of getting away with it all. But also in the years (60s, 70s, 80s) that he was doing this sordid stuff so were a lot of other men, doing similar stuff ( 12:08 both famous and non famous), probably not as much and not as extreme but definitely predatory behaviour both in social settings and the workplace and it was seen as the norm and a bit of a joke. And if the female wasn’t “up for it” you were seen as a spoil sport or stuck up. Television programmes were extremely sexist and full of innuendos e.g On the Buses, The Benny Hill Show. In retrospect all this helped JS get away with it and make the victims feel like they were in the wrong. I grew up in the late 70s/early 80s and I remember coming across some real creepy men on more than one occasion. In the late eighties I entered the workplace- it was full of misogyny, rude, unwanted comments, wolf whistles, dirty jokes, etc. Again this was seen as the norm. No wonder he got away with it.

He wasn’t funny or humerous in any way , he had a very dislikable personality and I got the impression that people laughed at him not with him . Never liked him ! Always thought him eccentric and weird . Just goes to show that he manipulated everyone from Prince Charles and prime minister down because he campaigned and raised money for charity. BBC must have known what he was doing but turned a blind eye to. Thatcher used to invite him to chequers regularly and Saville had friends in Yorkshire police and once he got his knighthood he thought he was untouchable . It’s a pity he died before he could have been brought to justice .Once again kudos to Steve Coogan for a brilliant portrayal of a psycopathic predator .

I have one more episode to watch of this challenging docu-drama. I had been surprised by some people's appraisal that because of the dramatic element, it had become entertainment & therefore distasteful. But Steve Coogan's portrayal of Britain's most monstrous man & the way the story is presented shows the nuance that a straight documentary can't give. And it unashamedly shows how the persona that Savile wore, like one of his outlandish outfits, was a mask that could be taken off at a moment's notice.
It is painful to watch, but it demonstrates just how Savile operated. It explains how he managed to remain able to abuse & harm throughout his lengthy career yet was exalted & endorsed by so many in power. And it highlights those who could see what he was but could not talk, or when they did, could not be heard. Some, we know, colluded to protect him or wilfully turned a blind eye.
It's easy to say, "Well, I'd do something." and the missed opportunities were many. However, when you see Coogan's portrayal, it may give you pause to consider if you actually could.
Most importantly, this docu-drama gives us warning signs to look out for. There are already others in the industry that have been outed for their behaviour - red flags becoming more visible after Savile's reign of abuse. That his victims have backed & endorsed this project, with the BBC, tells me that it was worth making.

A bouncer (or possibly one of his security staff) came over to me and asked me if I wanted to meet Jimmy. I was so excited at the thoughts of meeting someone off the telly that I immediately said yes. As the man was walking me towards the backstage area where Jimmy’s caravan/dressing room was, I saw a school friend & shouted to her to come and meet Jimmy with me. The fact that both of us were there meeting him probably saved me from being sexually assaulted. Clearly it was the job of those men to pluck young girls from the audience for him to molest.
